Ok, couldn't afford a real holiday, so l did the next best thing and spent a day in my capital city instead!

First off l got off from the train station, hmmm, can't remember the name off hand, he, he!

And for the record Melbourne, isn't overrun with Kangaroo's and Koalas, although Wombats, not so sure?

Images from walking away from Flinders St Station,...to get a small cake!

This is the view from my fav, coffee shop, overlooking the Yarra, sigh! They have a lousy cake selection, hence the smuggling of the nice small cake from the other shop!

And Fed, Square has a pretty good art shop as well, on the left!

Then walking up to Museum station, we have Chinatown!

And Museum has the old shot tower, where they used to make shot for guns, by dropping molten metal down this building so it became cylindrical by the time it reached the bottom!

And this clock...

That does this every hour, well they move about while it plays Waltzing Matilda, worth a look if you are down my way!

Then for the Opal lovers here are some!

All of these images are a lot bigger than, this so let me know if you are desperate for a closeup?

Then last stop was the Hotel Sofitel, Collins Place, with these spectacular views from the,...ahem, well it has a big window!

you can see the Yarra again and the Tennis Centre with a live match on the left!

MCG, right!

And the Hotel, only $6 for a coke, and you get spoilt to death, well worth it!

Hope you enjoyed my guided tour!

Not sure about the whole of oz, Brisbane wasn't that bad, but l tend to agree certain parts of Melbourne, are getting so bad, entire shops are there now, with no English, anywhere, basically have to guess what they are selling?

Queenslands theme parks, almost the same thing, but from what l have heard if MovieWorld didn't have Chinese tourists, then it wouldn't exist!

Dreamworld same thing, not sure about Wet and Wild"?

Glad that everyone enjoyed the tour, it was a good day apart from the coffee shop being understaffed and taking almost 20 minutes to do a coffee.

But the Chinese waitress, with a crush on me, made up for it!

      Well almost!

It was all those dumb real fruit shakes, that delayed my coffee.

Melbourne is a well planned and designed city. I've enjoyed my few trips there immensely. From Flinders St station it's a brief walk to the MCG and Tennis Centre. Compare that with Sydney where the main venues are out in the 'burbs. Stadium Australia had it's own separate train line built to cater for fans, but the SCG and Sydney Football Stadium (next door to each other) are a pain in the arse to get to and away from.

Perth is similar to Melbourne except for having the venues on the edge of the CBD. The WACA ground is on the CBD edge, and is a shortish walk from the city centre, however Subiaco Oval is in the 'burbs but has more than adequate public transport to get punters there and back.

I can't really speak for Brisbane or Adelaide as I haven't spent much time in either, and I've never been to Hobart or Darwin.

Yes, l think the same of Perth, went there about 10 years ago, and it was well planned out, since they had plenty of time after the second world war to map out the city!

Never really thought of Melbourne in a sporting way, but good to know if l ever go see the Tennis, did that a long time ago, and remember putting 30+ sunscreen on, and still getting burnt!

Sydney is pretty good, but the roads are a bit of a mess, Brisbane, drive into that city on a wing and a prayer, and l drive around in circles trying to get out of the place.

And the on/off torrential rain with 90 humidity doesn't help!

Nice pics of Melbourne. Great city.
I've never been to Hobart, but I spent a month house-sitting in Darwin last year. I really liked it, but I think you'd need more than a few days to get the feel of the place. Go for at least a week during winter and hire a car. The weather during the dry season is perfect every day.
