Sounds like a great and obvious idea. I think the reason why it hasn't been done before is that people would consider it CRASS to do in ones ashes.

I almost did this with Ricky's ashes, but I opted to scatter him at one of our favorite stomping grounds.

You can also be a gemstone if you prefer:
