Is the Pacquiao-Mayweather Fight Overrated?

Hey boxing fans,

Now that the world already knows that Mayweather will fight Pacquiao on May 2, many boxing fans are still excited.

Well, there are some observers that it is overrated and will be boring to read, just like the guy here.

Why Pacquiao-Mayweather Fight is Overrated and Will be Boring to Watch | Taho News

I think most of his opinions are valid, especially when he mentioned that the fight is very late.

What do you think? No negative comments, please.

Thanks

Oh you will... Don't expect their promoters to NOT MILK this matchup. Expect Mayweather to lose part 1 because there's TONS MORE MONEY to be made when there's a REMATCH.

        I hope so.

I can see Mayweather hanging on the ropes a lot and losing or winning a close decision and then a rematch in which Mayweather wins and then a rubber match in which Mayweather absolutely destroys Pacman.

Or Pacman could lose a close decision and then that would allow for at least a second fight. If that's close and Pacman loses his fans will want another chance.

I'd love to see them fight at least twice.

I predict at least 2 million pays for each bout.

I wonder if they'll hold the line at $80 a pop or will they ask for $100?

I figure $89.95 or $99.95. If I were to guess --> Pacman loses this first fight in a close fight or a split to set up a second big money fight.

        ^^^ lol... thats hilarious

The fight is late but even prior to mayweathers last fight you had boxing fans typing away at how much mayweather is dodging pacman and why he should fight him. So I wouldnt say its too late!

Theres also a bit to go to get the hype up for the fight

@ the Op...no i don't remotely think the fight is over rated. Perhaps the pay might be, simply because of the popularity of the fighters they'll be receiving ridiculous sums never before seen in boxing.

I just want to see a fight where it's evident both are giving it their all. Not some run around the ring where it's obvious one or the other is just trying to "get through" the fight to collect a mega-fat check.

I know Pacquiao is literally taking the Philippines on his shoulders with this one, and that in itself might be propelling him to prepare for it as if his life depends on it (which in his mind, it might). And though i happen to be a fan of Pacquiao, I can't honestly say i see him knocking out Mayweather.

I see everything neck and neck down to the judges decision . But I hope to God there's no worst-call-ever NFL superbowl type scenario where the final decision appears to baffle and stun siding with the lesser performing fighter when the evidence of the fight itself suggests that the loser obviously held the better performance.

Please God don't let that happen lol

I'm not sure if Mayweather is employing the Gorgeous George/Ali promotional tactic of making a lot of people hate him and his big mouth - so that they will gladly pay to see him get his butt kicked - or not.

Pacman is completely focused on this fight. He's already in LA. The training at the Wildcard gym would be closed doors. They have been building this fight for more than 5 years. It's a bit too late, but everyone would still watch it even if the ticket and PPV prices are so overpriced.

Honestly, I don't see why some people are on the Mayweather bandwagon because of age. Mayweather is 38 and PacMan is 36. I didn't realize that until a couple days ago. I wish the fight would have happened 5 years ago, but better late than never, I guess.

I see a rematch happening if Pacquiao wins a close fight, but not if Mayweather wins, close or not.

Mayweather has been dodging Pacquiao for years and if he wins the fight he'll have nothing left to prove. He'd be 48-0, he's already a gazillionaire and his legacy would remain intact.

I could see him fighting twice more so he could break Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record, but not against someone like PacMan. There are easier fights out there.

    Just my take.

My brother and I were trying to see if cheap seats in the nosebleeds would be less than $600-$700 and apparently that will not be the case. Forbes is reporting the cheapest tickets will start at $1000 and run up to $5000 (face value) for ringside seats. The MGM holds 16,800 so that's a bunch of box office cabbage!

422 tickets were "pre-released" and those tickets are going for a small fortune.

Witnessed the first press conference for the fight yesterday via ESPN.

HBO & Showtime spoke and will be broadcasting the fight since both fighters have contracts with them.

Remember, Floyd inked a big deal with Showtime.

The managers spoke about the long five years in the making of the fight and everything that had to be overcome with Bob Arum making a joke about how hard Floyd Sr. was staring at him.

MGM Grand spoke since the fight will be held there.

Freddie Roach, Manny's trainer spoke but Floyd Sr. did not and Roach said something to the effect of we're going to kick Floyd's ass.

The fighters spoke and were well behaved.

This fight should smash the previous record of PPV buys of Floyd vs Canelo.

The gate will get close to doubling the previous gate record of about 20 million by I think Floyd vs Canelo.

Maybe both camps have decided that there's no need for any personal antics between the fighters or maybe they're saving it for another time. Time will tell.

Well, in my opinion, it is kind of overrated. Here's what you need to do to make a multimillion dollar fight:

    - Take 2 boxers who has done well with their careers.
    - Have them throw barbs at each other online or on television.
    - Negotiate for a contract
    - Fail the negotiation process
    - Do it over and over again for 5 years
    - Let people do the marketing themselves by talking about the fight
    - Voila! You got yourself a several hundred million fight!

You can do this to any boxers with good records. All you need is enough time to have the fight fermented. Most people have already lost their excitement on this. But then again, it is still worth watching. It is just 5 years too late. Well, here's an additional source of boxing news for future reference on this.

Yea, of course it's over rated and over hype. But I don't mind, it gets people talking who would normally ignore each other. Football season is over, the NBA is pretty boring this year over-all so it's good timing for sports fans.

Of course throngs of people will get the big let down when Mayweather out boxes, out speeds and out strategises Pacman. But it will be nice for throngs of people on both sides up until then.

I just thought of something. Manny did a better job against Oscar Delahoya than Floyd.

    - Pacquiao defeated De La Hoya via technical knockout when De La Hoya decided not to continue with the fight before the start of the ninth round.

    But...

    - Floyd had to settle for a split decision when he beat Oscar.

As someone who has been boxing as a hobby since I was a toddler (my father was an amateur boxer and had me punching the sandbag as a toddler), I can emphatically say this fight is over-hyped and overrated; but then again, that's the nature of the sport, especially when you have two fighters that are so well known and popular, both having a huge almost cultish following.

Boxing styles make fights as well as the fighters themselves. Though Mayweather is an excellent boxer with incredible speed and technical ability, he fights not to lose and he is an incredibly boring fighter to watch. And I love watching technical fighters too, but Mayweather has a unique style that is just boring to watch.

Though Mayweather is considered to be "old" for the sport of boxing, he is also one of the most fit fighters around. Even though he's lost a step at his age, he still has one of the fastests hands out there.

Both fighters are training extremely hard, probably like they've never trained before.

From my observations, Pacman is not the same fighter he used to be after Marquez knocked him out. He doesn't look as fast nor as strong as he used to be.

Though I am rooting for Pacquiao because I admire him and cannot stand Mayweather, I think Mayweather is going to win the decision in this bought. In matching up their style of fighting, I think Mayweather has the edge in both handspeed and technical ability. Pacquiao has fought a lot of good fighters, but he's never fought anyone with the handspeed and technical ability that Mayweather has. This will be a true test of his abilities.

Yes, the fight is going to be overrated, and even though the fight is 5-6 years too late, millions of people are still going to pay to watch it because it's still considered the boxing match of our generation. There is still a lot of interest in this fight.

Will it actually deliver? Who knows. That's why they are going to fight. I'm definitely going to watch this fight and I hope I'm wrong about the outcome, because I would love to see the look on Mayweather's face if he loses.

In the meantime, I'll be watching Machida fight Rockhold tonight in UFC's fight night.

I'm with you there. If Manny can cut off the corners and actually hit Mayweather he's got a chance. I'm sure Mayweather has studied all of Manny's fights with Marquez, especially the very last one where Marquez knocked him out.

I saw the Showtime Mayweather 24/7 promo last night and I was surprised to learn that Floyd was allegedly robbed of a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics.

A U.S. boxing official resigned in protest and Katie Couric (while interviewing Floyd) said that Floyd was poised to earn 180 million from this fight.

And then she asked Floyd if that amount of money was insane.

    Also...

Floyd was originally promoted by Bob Arum but brought out the contract for 750K.

Judging by the revenue being brought in from the fight, I'd say the fight is underrated.

It looks like bettors are betting on a draw. Las Vegas opened at 22:1 for the fight to end in a draw. It's been bet down to 8:1.

A draw does make the most financial sense, so they can have a rematch that will make even more money. And if either Arum or Don King are promoting a fight in Las Vegas, you can never be sure of the outcome.

I want Manny to win, but would put the money on Floyd.

BTW, I "think" between the two fighters, they've only had one knockout between them over the past five years. I think I have those numbers correct, I could be off a little but I'm in the ballpark.

It means that a few weeks ago, if you bet $1 on a draw and it ended in a draw, you'd win $22.

Now, if you made the same $1 bet, you'd win only $8.

This is because Las Vegas doesn't like to wager themselves and they want to balance the betting and only take their vig (percentage of the bet). So because so many people were betting a draw, Vegas has dropped the odds so fewer people will place that bet and (hopefully) places bets on one fighter or another to win.

Basically, the betting public thinks a draw is a real possibility and Las Vegas is adjusting accordingly.

One thing I've noticed about this fight. Compared to other mega-promoted fights of the past. This has to be the biggest fight ever where the two fighters seem to actually like each other.

In big mega fights of the past fighters always seem to almost try to make themselves not like each other. You see MMA fighters doing it all the time now. But here no one's talking "smack" about the others character, personality or fighting ability, etc.

Other than the magnitude of the fight, it must be pretty boring for reporters who thrive on that stuff (most reporters), despite the barrage of baiting questions each fighter gets, neither fighter bites. So, reporters have to work a little harder to get interesting tidbits. No reporter likes to hear a bunch of positive stuff all the time from two fighters. But maybe the paradigm is shifting? ....Naw!

LOL. Haven't these guys read the (old school) "hype fight" manual. You have to talk about each others character, personality, mother or something. What are they trying to do civilize boxing? Now the guys in the video below have it right, this is what sells tickets and pay per view. Not this "I respect him as a fighter" stuff. (excuse the tongue in my cheek).

I wouldn't be surprised if they called the fight a draw if it's a close match. Boxing is so corrupt that nothing surprises me anymore (remember Manny's loss to Bradley? That was insane).

Mayweather wants to secure his "legacy" as the best fighter in history and to be undefeated. He's going to do everything in his power to not lose the fight.

I'm still rooting for Manny and I want him to win. I can barely wait to see the fight.

Are there any notable undercards fighting on this one? I'm going to look it up.......

Another interesting tidbit I've yet to hear anyone comment on in the media, (hmm) maybe I should start my own newsletter. The fact this has to be one of the first major boxing events (or sporting events) where hands down more Americans want the boxer from another country to win more than the boxer from their own country. America is the only country where I've seen this happen on a regular basis - especially in boxing.

But in this case ... Who could argue? Pacquiao is a nice guy - (who has a cool mother by the way). What's not to like. I don't think it's that so many people dislike Mayweather, he's just been "outliked" (is that a word) by the Pacman. Most of the former boxing champions are rooting for Pacquioa (Ali, Tyson, Forman, and others).

This is a good point, as I almost always root for the American. But like I posted above, I pick Mayweather to win the fight, but am rooting for Manny. Manny is a good guy and easy to root for. Floyd has had a number of issues outside the ring that make him hard to root for.

Of course, if I was betting real money on Floyd, I'd root for him.

At this point saying Floyd is scared when he's already signed is bad timing. You do that to get the other fighter to sign, you don't say that when the name is on the dotted line.

Now you talk about his character, inferior boxing skills, repulsive personaity or how you're going to shut him up, things like that Manny. You can tell he hasn't had much practice at talking "smack".

I like Manny, but when a reporter asks a fighter how he plans to beat an opponent and all he says is God will help me. That's not always a good strategy, how does he know God won't help the other figher or just stay out of it altogether?

I saw Floyd on ESPN tonight and he seemed almost sedated.

Maybe he's seen Manny in those Foot Locker commercials and would like a few of his own?

He was asked about his calm demeanor and he replied by saying something like...

...he's already done all the trash talking necessary, over the years, to get himself involved in the richest boxing match in history, and there is no need for any more theatrics.

Weigh in tomorrow at 6pm on ESPN2.

    We'll see...

But no fireworks at the weigh in except the crowd was decidedly pro Manny.

    - Floyd has a reach advantage over Manny of 5 inches and a height advantage of only 2 inches.

I like Manny P. , But he has to have some unique, revolutionary strategy to totally shock Mayweather, his trainer ,and the world like Ali and the rope-a-dope or something. Otherwise it's going to be a long night (or short night if he's put to sleep) for Pacquiao.

The goods news Pacquiao will still get the $100 million. Couldn't go to a nicer boxer. Have fun guys, see you on the other side. Gotta prepare for the Fight Party, got a million honey-do's.

I sure hope Manny Pacquiao wins. He has an incredible effect on the morale of Filipinos. Win or lose, he said he'll use earnings from his fight to help typhoon victims in the Philippines. Mayweather is mean piece of work who's committed domestic violence on numerous occasions, even getting jailed for it, and squanders money just to show off how rich he is, surrounded by a paid a$s-kissing entourage.

That all said, wouldn't it be best if Filipinos pinned their hopes and national pride on, I don't know, a singer, computer programmers or something that doesn't involve an ideal of pummelling someone till their brains can't take it any more?

      I don't care who wins.

Americans are probably 60-40 or even more against Floyd so it not like its America versus the Philippines.

      BTW...

If Manny somehow gets knocked down or out the whole Filipino nation will put their hands on their TVs in an attempt to help him get up - like they did when he suffered his knockout and the hands of Marquez.

Whole nations were/are sometimes pitted against each other represented by boxers and probably the most famous case was the Joe Lewis-Max Smelling 2 fight - back in about 1937.

Before the fight, Lewis was invited to the White House to receive encouragement from FDR and when Smelling fell the first time during this historic fight of Democracy vs. Nazism, the Germans cut the radio feed - and the rest is history.

Once Joe fixed a few problems and hit his stride he was almost impossible to beat. Billy Conn almost didn't the job on him with his jab and quick feet, but as Joe said before the fight, " He can run, but he can't hide". Joe tracked him down and put him away late.

I'm amazed at the respect that people give Jackie Robinson for his contribution to black men and sport. The truth is that Joe Louis was a bigger star than Robinson ever was, and he came before Jackie. He also bailed Jackie out of a court martial situation during the war in which Jackie struck an officer. After Jack Johnson's antics, Robinson would have never found his place in MLB without Louis coming before him.

I heard it was more like Conn was beating Lewis on points late in the fight and got careless while greedily going for a knockout.

Lewis may not have got a shot at the title if he didn't give Braddock 10% of all future earnings because after Jack Johnson, no one was supposed to give a brother a shot at the title.

If it wasn't Jackie, it would have been someone else at a later date because some team would have tried to mine the talent of the negro leagues sooner or later. Maybe after the civil rights movement.

Branch Rickey did it for two reasons.

Number one, he wanted to fill the stands and number two he knew there was a lot of talent in the Negro leagues that could give his team an edge - and the Dodgers became a real powerhouse over the next 10 years after Jackie's arrival -with a couple other outstanding negro players, and won a world championship.

That's Billy's alibi(and other white folks), but he had moved around so much during the fight that his legs just wore down. Joe also invested in the body and Billy just kept getting slower as the fight went on. He didn't get caught and took out with 1 or 2 punches as many have suggested. Billy took a systematic beat down in the13th. His legs just would not carry hit around the ring to box and he just couldn't take the pounding. At any rate, looking for a knock out or not..... he got stopped. Bad ideas help go in to a W or an L. They did have another fight after the war. Billy's body was shot to dust and got dealt with rather quickly. Billy's stellar performance is generally the fight pointed to that insist Joe could not compete with Ali.

There are no major probs between the governments or the peoples of the U.S. and the Philippines that I know of.

I can barely wait to watch the fight. As a boxer myself I'm curious to see the technical match up that is going to occur. Is the fight overhyped? Of course it is. That's the name of the game. And frankly, the way Mayweather fights, it's NOT going to be an exciting fight for the casual observer.

Even so, I'm still excited. I'll be watching the fight at one of my favorite casinos.

Note: The Mayweather camp has revoked the press passes for two ESPN female reporters because they asked Mayweather about his domestic violence issues.

    BTW...

I'll be watching the fight with at least 15 family members over my mothers' house which is about 25 minutes away from mine.

I just talked to one of my sisters and she told me she was bringing salad because she's been told that there'll be plenty of greasy foods on hand and we'll need something to balance that out.

As a former amateur and professional boxer with several hundred fights and 2 decades of training I can't see Manny winning this fight. A decade ago, I trained in Las Vegas with Floyd's uncle Jeff and at Top Rank. I've never seen any fighter more versatile than Floyd. I've seen him do things in sparring that he's never had to resort to in fights. I've also been to the Wild Card to spar James Toney and I've seen Manny both train and spar. He's tremendous, but it's no secret what he's gonna do once he crosses the strands.
Manny would have to catch Floyd and stop him to have any chance to win. Short of that, expect Floyd to cruise. My heart wants to see Manny win, but I wouldn't put money on it.

Expect to see Floyd lose to Keith Thurman if he decides to stay around much longer.

The fight was not the FIGHT OF THE CENTURY!.....everyone can agree on that.

It was more like a low key fight of the week, at best!!

FACT : In the rounds of their fight MAYWEATHER was making on average just over $3 million USD per minute. yes! Per minute.....wow!

So this was classic Offensive vs Defensive battle, the defensive Mayweather just trying to outlast Paquiano and tire him out.

I was thinking 'This is like watching an egg frying on a bald guys head'.

If you knew what you were talking about, you would not have made that comment since the shootings have been going on for quite some time - like almost forever.

Its simply the technology (cell phone cameras everywhere and the internet) that has shown a light on these activities in this generation.

Don't anyone shout me down, feel my forehead or slap "your" forehead, but I think they should "push for a rematch". Here's my reasoning.

#1 There is no one else who can compete with Mayweather!
#2 There is no other fighter Mayweather can make that amount of money with! No hype needed.
#3 The second fight will be closer because Pacquiao now has experience and will not make the same mistakes the next time.

I'm not saying Pac will win, but the second fight will be different because Pacquiao will fight him different.

Imagine after Mayweather's next tune up fight which will be win number 49, which will tie the all time record of Marciano. His record breaking fight will be the rematch with Pacquiao. Wow!

That may sell more than the first fight. Mayweather fans will watch to see if he breaks the impossible to beat record of Marciano sealing his legacy. And Pacquiao fans will watch to see if he can spoil the Mayweather celebration and get revenge. Hollywood couldn't write a better script. Stay Tuned!

          Agreed.

I had the same scenario playing out and its like you read my mind.

The fight was a typical Mayweather affair except the opponent this time was Manny.

And you're right, with another 12 rounds, Manny may get in more shots and possibly really hurt Floyd because I thought he hit Floyd more than anyone else who's fought Floyd.

          - We had a great time at my fight party with about 18 family members - with lots of gut wrenching laughs as everyone continually tried to say something funny.

          - Jamie Fox struggled with the national anthem but recovered nicely near the end.

          - The whole spectacle was commercialism at its finest. We fell out when we saw Freddie Roach's headband.

          - We all fell out when Manny said he thought he won the fight.

So the fight is over and no surprise, it did not deliver on the hype. However, people on social media who say Manny won definitely do not know how to score boxing. During the fight I saw Mayweather get off to a slow start, but once he got into his rhythm he landed almost twice as many shots as Manny as he also landed the more effective punches.

Manny, hit many punches on Mayweather's arms and shoulders, but didn't connect that many to Mayweather's head. Those look nice to the casual fan rooting for Manny, but those punches don't score points with the judges and those punches don't really have much of an impact on the other fighter.

I've never been a fan of Mayweather's fighting style and last Saturday, watching him hug Manny nearly every time Manny tried a flurry of punches, reminded me that while Mayweather is a great boxer, he is not a Warrior.

Did Mayweather "outbox" Manny? Yes, he showed technical superiority and I agree that the judges called the fight correctly. It was a unanimous win and in no way did Manny win that fight. I gave 4 rounds to Manny and the rest to Mayweather.

Sure, he won the boxing the match, but it wasn't a fight. Mayweather didn't come to fight, because if he went toe-to-toe with Manny, THAT would have been one of the greatest fights to watch and THAT would have truly proved to me if Mayweather had a Warrior's heart. The fights between Pacquiao and Marquez were much more exciting to watch because they were actually there to fight.

I've been reading in the press that Manny had a torn shoulder and that affected his ability to fight and that he was denied an injection. News flash: Mayweather also has injuries. Boxers almost always have to deal with injuries. I think bringing it up after the loss was unnecessary. Take the loss like a man Manny.

The better boxer won that fight, but not the better fighter. It'll be interesting to see if they try for a rematch. If I were Mayweather, I wouldn't take it. He's relinquishing his belts from that fight so he doesn't have to fight a "mandatory challenger". Is he ducking Amir Khan now?

You make a good point, but I think that's the old school description I hear a lot of people (even boxing experts) still make. A boxer is what Floyd Mayweather did Saturday. A fighter is what people now call Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

Floyd could probably stand toe -to-toe like a lot of boxers. But I imagine he wants to retire and not end up talking with slurred speech and other ailments of most toe-to-toe brawlers or "fighters".

        Good point!

And a much less qualified boxer could very well get lucky.

Floyd just deviated from the "Fight Hype 101 Handbook". Normally champions in mega-matches hint they "may" retire (wink-wink). Look how many times Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Larry Holmes and even Muhammad Ali pulled than stunt.

Where else or who else can either boxer fight and make even close to what they can make fighting each other? They can still smell money - but you have to prime the public with drama and suspense to maximize the money.

That's quite alright, if there's a rematch I won't be watching it. After Pacquiao's ridiculous statement about his shoulder injury and not disclosing it until right before the fight leads to this:

Pacquiao Could Face Disciplinary Action For Shoulder Injury

Mayweather beat him fair and square and bringing up the shoulder injury has also opened him up to a lawsuit.

What a bone-headed move on different levels.

  • >"Is the Pacquiao-Mayweather Fight Overrated?"

If Pacquiao had not gone into it the way he did, I suspect that it was not overrated. But in light of how he went into it impaired, it would seem to have been overrated only in hindsight. I really wish he had just postponed it again in order to get a more "pure" match if there was going to be one at all.

I think this fight is really was a great fight.. The thing is only mayweather was the one who's able to show his skills and he literally out box pacquiao during the match. but if the match did happen 5 years ago, i'm sure its the other way around..let's face it pacquiao loss his agility and reflex needed to match mayweather skills.

I hear a lot of people make the above statement, even boxing experts. But it's something I don't quite get, hopefully you can explain it to me as to why you think if the fight was 5 years ago you're sure Manny would win?

Fact: Mayweather is two years older than Manny. You're seeing an older, fight-worn fighter too. It's not like Mayweather is a spring chicken and Manny is this Old relic. Please explain, just curious because no one ever does, even boxing experts. I'll wait here by my P.C for your answer.

The fight had 4.4 million pay per view buys - shattering the old record of 2.5 million and generated almost 600 million in revenue.

    Thanks
Offcourse its overrated. All the marketing and media hype is made to cash in hundreds of millions. Also a very boring fight. The long-awaited fight between two of the best boxers in the world is delayed too many times. Even the negotiations took 6 years. Its marketing, marketing and marketing.
