Mr. Spock has passed away at age 83, he has lost his battle with COPD.

    My favorite Star Trek is #6. Lots of memorable dialog.

    My favorite line is when Scotty says (after some emergency) "Then we're dead!"

    And Spock nonchalantly says "I've been dead before".

    Nimoy will be missed by all the fans.

    Leonard Nimoy,

    Rest In Peace Leonard Nimoy. You will always be the original Vulcan to me. It was great to meet him in person, usually at some kind of convention, a couple of times and it was always a great impression.

    He will be missed and I'm glad we had him for as long as we did. He was the voice of one of my favorite shows as a child, "In Search Of....".

      According to Nimoy, that Vulcan salute is actually something he saw his rabbi do during a part of some ceremony when people are supposed to have their eyes closed.

    In his autobiography I Am Not Spock, Nimoy wrote that he based it on the Priestly Blessing performed by Jewish Kohanim with both hands, thumb to thumb in this same position, representing the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), which has three upward strokes similar to the position of the thumb and fingers in the salute. The letter Shin here stands for El Shaddai, meaning "Almighty (God)", as well as for Shekinah and Shalom. Nimoy wrote that when he was a child, his grandfather took him to an Orthodox synagogue, where he saw the blessing performed and was impressed by it.

    The symbol became so well-known that in June 2014 it was added to version 7 of the Unicode standard as U+1F596 (raised hand with part between middle and ring fingers), and the White House referenced it directly it in its statement on Leonard Nimoy's death, calling it "the universal sign for 'Live long and prosper.'"

    The Jewish tradition states the Divine Presence would shine through the fingers of the priests as they blessed the people, and no one was allowed to look at this out of respect for God.

    Each kohen's tallit is draped over his head and hands so that the congregation cannot see his hands while the blessing is said.

              Sorry but you are the ONLY one making it about religion and atheism (which is a religious position - against religion). All those posts did was point out the origins of the salute. If something has a religious origin someone saying so is not a religious discussion. its just stating a fact and moving on. Just like saying he was Jewish.
