I can't believe it! I'm having another allergic reaction.

It's not respiratory this time, thank goodness. But from head to toe, I have red itchy, burning skin. I look like a tomato.

Anyway, despite the winter weather advisory and treacherous road conditions, I'm off to see my doctor.

Wish me well.

If you haven't yet, it sounds like you should talk to your doctor about an epipen. Epinephrine autoinjector - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia With someone that has reactions as violent as yours, the next step could be right around the corner! And THAT could be FATAL!

      Sorry to hear that Terra.

Be careful out there. And I hope it is resolved real soon. Health is no big deal until you don't have it or have some medical issues.

Then it seems to be the only thing that matters.

      I can attest to this

Terra - this is from me - someone whose life was in jeopardy from allergies until I was 20.

Get your ass away from that doctor. Get it to a natureopath. Your doctor is making big bucks and solving not one damned thing for you. You need to find a way to control them yourself.

You also need to consider a scratch test to figure out everything you're allergic to. The test consists of putting drops of all pollen related substances (dusts, molds, pollens, etc) on your back and scratching them just enough to see how your cells react to each substance. They repeat the test with food extracts. You need to figure out once and for all what you are sensitive to and negate it from your life. If you are not using 100% natural cleaners, or the person there before you didn't, you could also be having a reaction to toxic chemicals.

If you don't face the fact that despite spending major amounts of money and time on this doctor you're showing no improvements in your health, you're never going to shake any of it. Doing the same thing over and over is NOT working for you. Do something different.

FYI - for a topical reaction, a bath of baking soda and organic corn starch or oatmeal powder will take care of the immediate outbreak. You still need testing to find out what your system is reacting to. You're on disaster mitigation instead of control until you do that.

One of my daughter's had severe allergies (asthma). I took her to an allergist and he did the skin tests. He then created an antigen just for her based on the results of the skin test. If you haven't done that already, you really should. A couple of years on the antigen and she has been free of any asthma attacks since. Even if it doesn't stop the allergies as it did in my daughter's case (or she just outgrew it), you will feel a lot better and should not have reactions on the antigen.

if she had the weather we had this evening her power may be off -
ours was off for around 3 hours - because of the freezing rain - actually a transformer blew too - so we had a light show as well

I too hope you're okay, Terra

I'm home from the hospital now.

I made it again! I'm still alive, Hooray!

OMGosh! What an experience! Most times, I lose consciousness, or am in and out of consciousness this time I didn't at all. Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself. Probably the steroids and whatnot.

Okay, I got into my car and made it to the end of the driveway, when I noticed my throat started to feel a little funny. I had no wheezing or snapping, popping, crackling noises, no heaviness of the chest, just a funny feeling at the base of my throat. So I called my son whom I had sent to the drugstore to get me some Benadryl and asked him to hurry home because I thought my throat might be swelling. Then I backed up the driveway and went in the house, got my epi-pen and gave myself an injection, called my doctor who told me to get someone to drive me to Urgent Care just down the street from his office.

About 5 minutes later, my son got home and proceeded to drive me to the Urgent Care that's about 6 miles from the house. The roads were horrible but we were only going about 5 to 10 miles under the speed limit. Then a school bus pulled out in front of us and we had to slam on the breaks and slow down. The bus turned at the next neighborhood and we were off again, doing only 5 below the speed limit for another couple of miles. Then a yellow Volkswagen bug pulled out in front of us and putzed along at only 15 miles per hour.

I started to panic a little inside because it was getting harder to breathe, but didn't let my son know because I was afraid he would try something stupid and kill us, lol! Then I tried to swallow and couldn't. Yikes!! Next I tried to say my son's same and only whistles came out. OMGosh! I started to get a little worried at this point and just started praying in my head, with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes, we were just about to get into the turn lane on the right to turn into the urgent care when a huge steak truck pulled out in front of us. I tried to scream but nothing came out at all! Lord, help me! and Father God, help me! was all I could think of and I just started saying it over and over in my head.

My son stopped at the front doors, and I opened my door and got out, somehow he was right there and was running me inside. At the front desk he just said my mom needs help. The receptionist said, Okay, I'll just need your ID and insurance card and then we'll get you seen. My son yelled, and pardon his French, "F#ck that! She can't breathe, she can't talk, she's gonna die! I'll give you that sh*t in a minute!"

That got some attention and the side door opened and I was escorted back. When they asked me what was going on, and I tried to answer, but only whistles came out, the next thing I know, my sweater was being ripped off my head, I was getting hooked up to oxygen, and given an injection in my arm. When I looked down, I couldn't believe it! My arms and hands were swollen at least twice their normal size!

A breathing treatment was put in my mouth, my pant legs were being pulled up, shoe boots and socks peeled off, electrodes put on and that's when I saw my legs were huge too with deep indents where my shin high socks had been. Yuck! It was ugly! I got two more injections on my backside and a stethoscope was held to the top of my chest on the left hand side, over my heart and someone said there is abnormal air sounds, minimal air passage. I was being coached to breathe deep breaths and I heard some one yell for an ambulance. I was trying to breathe in some medicine, but it was hard.

Next thing I notice is two police officers standing at the foot of the bed, and then a Lake Orion firefighter and they were saying we heard over the radio and came to give emergency transport to the hospital. One of the doctors said, no, we need an ambulance with life saving equipment, Oxford Transport is on their way, I don't know why Star Ambulance is not responding. Then I started violently shaking. Not like tremors, but involuntary shaking and jerking. Weird! A guy asked me why I was shaking. Hello? I can't talk and why are you asking me, you should be telling me why!, I thought. He asked me if I was cold. I shook my head no. He asked me if I was scared. I shook my head no. Then I noticed my son looking scared to death with tears running down his face. Aww, poor baby!

Now I notice an IV being put into my left arm, then I see this huge bright yellow and black stretcher bed with all kinds of stuff attached to the back of it rolling in with two more guys. Then I heard a voice say, we have no airflow! and another say anaphylaxia. The EMS guys ask me if I can help scoot over onto the stretcher. I do. They tell me it is cold outside but will only be in it for a minute, and they start rolling me. That's when I look up and see this massive crowd of nurses, m.a.'s and doctors all looking through a huge glass window gawking at me with the curtain pulled back. That sort of made me mad, I didn't like it anyway.

One EMS guy, yelled he needed two assists in the ambulance and wanted a police escort to the hospital. I was loaded in and heard sirens and we were off and we were flying and sliding and fishtailing and it was a bit scary. The ambulance driver was continually blowing the horn too. I had a terrible headache.

The guy on my left said he was going to connect me to his EKG and needed to undo my bra, the guy on my left was saying I need you to breathe, honey, deep breaths. The guy on my left, Vitals...The guy behind me, falling, but in range. The guy on my right, I need you to take the biggest breath you have ever taken, in through your nose and out through your mouth. I'm thinking okay, but you have these oxygen thingies in my nose and this breathing apparatus in my mouth. Shouldn't it be the other way?

The guy on my left, are you nauseous? Head shake no. Do you have abdominal pain? Head shake no. Chest pain? Head shake no. Vitals...The guy behind me, dropping but still in range. The guy on my right, Honey, breathe, I need you to breathe deep breaths as much as you can. We need to get this medicine in so it can work and open your throat and airways. Guy on left, we are now treating you for shock, then yelled out vitals...guy behind me, dropping...out of range...but still acceptable. Guy on left, prep for an air passage, crinkling sounds behind me...Guy on right, Honey, Terra, breathe for me, please honey, breathe in through your nose as hard as you've ever breathed before, like you're trying to inflate your whole body. I took a deep breath and kept sucking and sucking, trying to anyway, and then I started coughing and it really hurt the left side of my throat. It sort of sounded like whooping cough and felt like something was trying to push through muscle or something on the left side of my throat.

Then I started gasping for air and was getting some. Guy on my right, getting some air passage. Guy on left, are you feeling better? Can you talk, I tried and faintly whispered yes. He said good, breathe, breathe! Guy on right...better air passage Guy on left, are you feeling better? I said yes and I heard my voice! Are you feeling even better, I said much better. Guy on right...much better air passage. Guy on left...Hey Keith, you can slow it down a little now, we now have a priority two, she's talking, she's talking man! Whoo Hoo! Guy on right...You did it honey, you did it! Okay, almost there, won't be long now.

Sirens still blazing, slowing down, stopping, gurney bed being removed out into the cold wind blowing blanket off and bra over, Yikes! Cold, cold, cold! Wheeled into my room, asked a lot of questions. Breathing much better, talking almost normal. Blood work, more oxygen, another EKG set up, something on my finger. Periodic beeps going off. Then my son comes with all of my belongings with a big smile on his face and proceeds to sit down and make lots of calls on his cell and answer lots calls too. The rest is kind of blurry, as I was very tired and in and out of sleep. Then hubby arrived and the doctor came and started talking to him. I only caught that they were admitting me and keeping me over night for observation to see what would happen when the meds started to wear off and I needed to be there in case my throat started to swell again. They told me my potassium was really low and gave me some in my IV. Then when that was finished, they gave me two more potassium pills to swallow.

Crap, I've written a book, lol!

Anyway, what they determined was after my eye appointment on Saturday with my eye doctor asking me to switch my allergy medication to Flonase and giving me some eye drops with emollients because my eyes were too dry from the dust allergy and medication, I developed the allergic reaction. It was one or the other or a combination of the two, but either way, I'm not to use those anymore, duh! They told me this was allergic angioedema this time.

Best part? I'm home now! And I'm still livin'!

Hubby stayed with me all night, brought me home, made me lay down, took a shower, then went to work. Man I need a nice long soak in the tub with the oatmeal Aveeno hubby got me. I still am burning from the waist down and itching from the waist up. Don't worry, my son is here babysitting me, haha!

Wow Terra, what an awful ordeal to have to go through. I hope you have ambulance and professional help services on speed dial.

I've had some allergies, too, some meds, dust, etc. After a lifetime of taking Penicillin, I developed a horrendous allergy to it. Red and swollen all over, but nothing that doses of Benedryl couldn't handle.

Be sure to let your pharmacy know what you took and what happened so that can go on your medical records there. Many medications as well as OTC are "related" to each other and something you think is totally different can cause the same problems. Let a pharmacist check any OTC you get as well before using. And for goodness sakes, if you use something new, please get someone to stay with you 24/7 for a couple days any time you get something new.

Hey, I can play a doctor on the Net

P.S. I'm glad you are alive and well and so much better. Modern meds are a miracle unless they give you the wrong thing.

An emergency room doctor gave me pain medication for an accident I had despite naming the other meds I couldn't take. So the $$hole gave me a med that was "related" and I should have sued him for the agony he caused. My family was getting ready to get me back to the emergency room. I'm also a bit afraid of meds, and had only taken half the dose or my family might have needed to do the suing.

Wow, I sure hope you are doing better by the time you read this.

I never had an allergy in my life until I moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Turns out they have an oak tree there that a very particular type of mold grows on the leaves when they rot on the ground. Go figure, whooda thunkit. Well, my allergy to that mold actually made me ill.

I didn't look like a piece of fruit, but a felt horrible.

They had chemical shots for it that I could take every year. But I moved instead.

I truly hope you beat this.

I know people this works well for. Didn't help me any, though. Knowing what I was allergic to sure helped me avoid them, though.

I'm still allergic to a lot of things. I also still have asthma. Moving to the west where it is a dryer climate and where there aren't as many pollens that are toxic to me was my answer to the problem, too. Out here, it's rare I even know I still have asthma and the allergens are so much fewer.

Wow, Terra. It's been decades on decades since I've been in Anaplyactic shock but it's not something you forget. It's miserable - to say the very least. It's also really scary when you have no clue you were exposed to something you're allergic to.

Glad it ended well. Hate to tell ya this, in case you haven't had a reaction like this before, but you're skin's gonna be messed up for a few days and it's going to take a few to get your energy back, too. Those reactions really take it out of you.

So - now. When are you gonna get your butt to a natureopath and start getting yourself taken care of without being given crap drugs that are gonna kill ya? Serious, girl. I'm missing 4 days of my life because the the AMA and their asthma drugs. You need to find a better way. If this isn't the ultimate hint, I don't know what it will take. The meds are not workin' for ya. BTW - you need to look up both of what they gave you and make sure they were not experimental. If either was - sue them crapless.

LOL - I can just imagine your son and husband. Poor guys. We're gonna have to change your name from Terra to Trauma.

I gotta do something different, that's for sure. It just is too tiring to think about it at the moment, though. Seriously, I am wiped right out.

The thing is, I've taken the Flonase before, as a matter of fact, I was given that as part of my meds when I had pneumonia a couple of years ago.

The eye drops with the emollients is something new from Bausch and Lomb according to the label. It was a sample my ophthalmologist gave me called Soothe.

I hope you find a good allergist that can help you with your problem. It's much to serious to not get the absolute best medical advice you can find.

        Be well.

Terra, girl, what a nightmare!!!! So glad to know you are home and okay!!!!

Anaphylactic shock is absolutely terrifying! I experienced it once years ago right after an allergy shot (my doctor always had patients stay in the waiting room for 15 minutes after a shot due to this potential risk). I remember it well - everything rapidly started closing up and I couldn't breathe - very claustrophobic and scary! Fortunately, I was right there in a doctor's office so they whisked me back into a room, gave me epinephrine, and put me on a nebulizer until I stabilized - which took almost an hour.

As for treatment - I'm with Sal on this. Find the best naturopathic or holistic doctor you can. And then look into the possibility of having "leaky gut syndrome". There's a huge connection between leaky gut (and digestive health in general) and allergies, food sensitivities, and compromised immune functioning.

It's actually pretty common in adults, but traditional doctors aren't likely to diagnose it (let alone even consider it). It's largely diet related (cumulative over years), but medications (e.g. NSAIDs, antibiotics, and many others), stress, and other things that irritate the gut can lead to serious damage over time. It's worth exploring at least. I'm a big believer in the role gut health plays in our overall health and immune functioning. Sadly, a lot of traditional medicine treatments do a lot of harm to gut health.

            Just my 2 cents!

            "Trauma drama mama" - LOL!

Although it sounds nasty, leaky gut, yuck, it is something I'd like to check into simply because all of those years my doctors had me on so many pain pills, and injections for my 7 muscle tears in my neck, underarm and shoulder along with physical therapy. 7 straight years until I said, to heck with this and quit it all. I then healed all on my own.

In the meantime, during those years, I developed a hiatal hernia and was given Nexium, the purple pill. I quit that too after 6 months. Then About 6 years ago, I had a Hida scan and my doctor said my gallbladder quit functioning and was only outputting 4% bile. He said there was no need to remove it if it didn't bother me and was quite surprised I didn't have any gallstones.

He gave me a prescription for a drug, the name of it slips my mind at the moment, (EDIT: It was Reglan) but when I got home, there was a commercial on for a class action lawsuit over that drug because it caused Parkinson's Disease type shaking and tremors that was irreversible, protruuding tongue, lots of nasyt stuff. I threw the prescription away right then and there without even taking one pill and just ate a couple of Activia yogurts a day for awhile along with some ginger and cayenne pepper supplements. I got better and never went back to him again.

So you can see why that makes sense to me. I'll check into it. Thanks!

The drug that almost killed me - I had taken for a couple of years. I hated it from the get because it made my brain foggy, zapped all my energy. I always felt sick - just not the allergy/asthma type sick. Then I got actually sick and took it with aspirin for a few days. Boom. I was in a coma for 4 days. The doctors actually lied to my parents and told them it was an illegal drug reaction. They messed up my whole life for years to hide their crap. It wasn't until I turned 18 and moved to Germany I was able to get away from that deadly crap. It took a German doctor to blow the whistle and tell me it was experimental. He freaked when he found out about me taking aspirin with it - freaked that the doctors were so ill informed they hadn't warned us.
That's when I started getting well.

                  That would be perfect justice!

I do miss my kitties and really really want to rescue a puppy! But my fear now is that Hubby is going to be even more afraid that I'll react to a dog the same way I did with the cats and getting one is going to be more difficult.

He's been watching over me like a hawk, pampering me almost (but not quite) to the point of annoyance and being way more helpful with things around the house than he already is. He's scared, I think.

                        You're welcome.

I was surprised there are that many breeds.

That list does not have the standard poodle, so I'm sure there are more.

The wiki for the standard poodle points out that all breeds shed, just that the
"hypoallergenic" shed less, get cleaned more, and can still bring stuff in on their
                        coats.

I'm thinking one of the smaller breeds that does not 'ramble through the bushes' so much.

The funny thing is that we even have to discuss this because I'm not allergic to dogs at all. But if that is the reason he says I can't get one, that I might develop that allergy, then I have that there back up.

                          I love winning! Hahaha!

I'm going to ignore "babe" and answer your question because I think you are sincere in asking.

I am doing better with the exception of the itching and stinging skin. I'm still taking the steroids and Benadryl, have an epi-pen with me at all times and tire very easily. But I'm getting there. I'm still breathing and that is the important thing.

As a matter of fact, I'm going to go and lie down now and see if I can take a little nap right now.

                              Thank you for asking.

Aww, Mike, that was sweet and unexpected, I must say.

But please, I'm just not up to jousting at the moment.

I can't move south, we just bought a new house and have only made the first two payments so far and I love it! Also, my grandbabies are here, I can't leave. I feel if I moved far away and couldn't see them, I'd probably feel dead anyway.

I won't be a goner, I won't allow it! I've got some feist and some fight in me and that makes me a survivor! So far...
I've survived anaphylactic shock 4 times now.

Bee sting, Penicillian, cat dander and now this one.

Um..........yeah, I should think that he'd be a little bit jumpy after you pull something off like almost dying on him. Attempting to leave the planet without a spaceship tends to make loved ones a little antsy, ya know?

I had a rough couple of days, those different steroids either made me a monster or the biggest airhead you would have ever met in your life. So I avoided coming here. They also made me very sleepy. I slept most of the weekend.

My skin is still red, raised, burning and itchy, but hubby called my doc and he called in a prescription for some cream that is helping some what.

I have to call an allergist tomorrow and make an appointment but he is the best in the area and it may take a while to get in.

Good news, as the steroid count goes down per day, my brain function goes up, lol!

                        Hurray!

Now that you've had time for that stuff to circulate out of your system, you should be starting to feel (and look) a little more normal. Hopefully the new guy can get you in for an appointment soon. I'm sure they'll want to wait at least a week or so to let all the gunk get cleared out so they can tell what's going on normally. It's hard to tell anything when you're still having a little bit of a reaction to the residue.

I am doing much better, but this prickly itching all over is driving me nuts. I can't imagine what I would feel like without the antihistamines and prescription strength Hydrocortisone cream. But still, I'm much, much better having to take less and less of the steroids. You know, the count down pack.

Yep, I'm calling for an appointment tomorrow and will just have to wait and see what happens from there.

No they don't, lol! Of course breeds look alike just like different races have resemblances with others in their race, but that's all. And once you get to know them and their own distinct personalities, even the kitties that look like twins now look different, if you get my drift.

No more so than what you just experienced. The point is, though, that if what you're doing isn't working for ya, you need to find something else that will. This is too important an issue to stay with a doctor who can't do better than putting you on constant steroids.

Oh, wait. I think I have that mixed-up with my later-in-life circumcision.

                  Never mind.

I've had it done; it stings a tiny bit (they prick your skin with each allergen) but I wouldn't really call it painful. Each allergen you react to will leave a small red bump (my testing was done on my forearm). It just takes a few minutes to do the test. This was nearly 10 years ago, though, so it might be done differently now.

Also, fwiw, my testing showed positive to both cats and dogs, yet I have no reactions around either and have been living with cats for the past 20 years. My worst reactions are to certain pollens and dust mites.

That's the sub-conscious cuteness factor of cats and dogs overwhelming the allergen factor.
There are numerous replicable studies on this phenomena. I just can't cite any research at the
                    moment.

Well I'm no psychologist, but I'm going to agree with both of you on all of it.

Cali - I had those tests done. While the scratch of the needle is light enough that it doesn't hurt at all - wasn't even particularly uncomfortable in my case, when my back reacted to hell and back and it took two weeks for it to resume a condition they could do the other set(pollens, etc was one and foods was another set), I was not real pleased with it. LOL.

Dan - I actually think that mind took over matter in my case. I've never been able to hug my dogs without long sleeves on - and couldn't let them lick me, especially on the face or neck - but when I brought home my first little boy (rottie) at 8 weeks old I was already so in love with him that I was willing to just about anything but give him up. I would have lived with my windows open for life if that's what it took to have a dog. Yet - when I go to other people's homes, the dog smell can bother me. Of course, some people live relatively pigishly, too, and I get low grade reactions in houses without animals if they are dirty enough.
