Do You Still Go To Book Stores?

I love book stores. Keeps me motivated. Sometimes I can not believe the um..."stuff" that can get published and make money!

Then they make a whole series of it! I leave the book store feeling invigorated!

You see celebrities making children's books all types of books.

What happened your last visit to a book store?

YES! I love bookstores! Great place for coffee, to work, peruse the magazines and, of course, purchase a book here and there. The last time I went into a bookstore, I purchased a book. Definitely want to support them even though bookstores are normally way more expensive than places such as Amazon.

Yeah nothing like a smell of a new book.
    I love books.
Unfortunately these days tend to buy online.

I could NEVER read a book off a tablet or screen.

Yep. I only buy a book online if it is not available in the local store, and I greatly prefer paper books I can hold instead of a pdf. What's nice about the bookstore is being able to peruse the text and quickly compare books.

I feel slightly guilty about this. I love going to bookstores. If it's a used bookstore, I'll buy whatever I intend on reading. but a store like Borders? I'll find books I want, and then order them on Amazon.I'll usually save 40% off the cover.

I'm an avid reader so you can pretty much count on me being in a bookstore or in the book section of my grocery store while grocery shopping.

The only time I purchase kindle books is when I'm going on vacation and need to save space.

Well, I open a book and look at the words. My brain interprets what those words mean and I follow the chains of thought or the story line, depending on what I am reading.

I forgot, I also read in the dark on my kindle. No lighting needed.

Been quite awhile for me, I'm not sure there's anything but used stores still open in my area. I either buy ebooks or from Amazon. I like books with real pages, but in a very small home, space is at a premium here. There's a nice library about 5-6 miles away, so that and used books is what I can easily get here.

Ah, but if he keeps doing it he'll go blind and will then have to rely on audio books. I guess that will leave both hands free though to .....

No. Tablets have made books obsolete in the house.

Good question! I wonder about this too. I still love going to bookstores for the same reasons everyone already mentioned. It may sound a bit "weird," but I love smelling new books! I hope they don't become obsolete. I also love finding little treasures from garage sales. I salvaged some old edition books through garage sales. It's just fun!

That reminds me! Maybe I will go tomorrow. I used to LOVE going to the book store. I also went to the library a lot. Hard to believe I ever spent so much time there, but I did. Of course, outside of a few systems I had that may NEVER be implemented in computers, the entire bookstore could be reduced to a little chip. MY GOD, this laptop now has 16GB of RAM! THAT is a HUGE amount to store books in. I could maybe hold every physical book I have in my whole home, in it, and search in seconds.

I've met some pretty interesting people in book stores. I don't care so much for the chain bookstores - but love rare and used book stores. Once in awhile I'll want a copy of a new release and then will go to a Bordres or B&N but if I'm just browsing, I want the used and rare.

You can get disappointed once in awhile in a used store by taking something home and getting 5 pages in and realizing you've read it before. For the most part, though, used books are a great way to get a great book cheap enough to buy several instead of just one when your book budget is low.

I remember I went to a used bookshop in a suburb of Melbourne run by a fat lady with a huge fat ass cat. Think I bought some Harry Potter.

I used to LOVE borders! I only went to two NON CHAIN bookstores in the US I liked. One was nice because it carried even books that were practically banned in the US, and it was nostalgic. The other was a heavily technical book store that was to book stores then like amazon is to a corner bookstand.

WHOA! Apparently the place I just spoke about CLOSED about a year ago!

Opamp Technical Books - CLOSED - Hollywood - Los Angeles, CA | Yelp

Although BBB still has them listed: Opamp Technical Books Incorporated Business Review in Los Angeles, CA - Serving the Silicon Valley BBB

Yea there was a Borders in San Diego I went to was attached to a starbucks and would sometimes have little presentations like acoustic guitars...now let's see a kindle do that.

Amazon took down an industry for better or worse.

I remember when I was looking for a job before and I can't find one, I used to go to bookstores and sat at the floor reading business books after finishing reading 1 book about business then that's the time I will go home.

It's just fun to sit at the floor reading books without ever buying it because I think bookstores as a library.

There used to be a little shop in a small town I once lived in. They had a section of new releases, the majority were used books, then they had a "library section" with reference books and books that were compilations of short stories. They had a little snack and coffee bar, so people could go in, drink coffee, snack, and read. I miss that shop. Would love to see more like it.

The only time I did that was when I INTENDED to buy a book. Of course, like one time I had a VB question, and it didn't seem to be answered ANYWHERE! I scanned EVERY VB book in the stupid store, and not ONE answered the question! I left knowing how to do it, but didn't buy a book, because it took several books to finally give me the answer.

SERIOUSLY, I think some books are written by people that have NEVER programmed before. They take a cert class or something, and figure they know everything and write a book that is only good for the simplest thing.

STILL, it wasn't out of the question to go there simply bored, not planning to buy, and leaving with almost $200 worth of books.
