Surely, it has to be outside of making money in IM or other business related fields?

What is your Purpose or what do you think the Meaning of Life is to You ?

I know its kind of broad , but I'm just curious to hear from some of you deep thinkers here in the OT

To become self aware, get off the karmic wheel, blah, blah, blah; and to try to achieve certain goals without jumping off a bridge, as that would keep the wheel spinning!

      Or it could be 42?

Wow, there's no shortage of shallow thinkers around here. I suggest spending less time on the forum and more time reading books. I know it'll be tough since the right books don't have many pictures - but...

...OP what's YOUR purpose/meaning in life?

Ah, you've only been here a while. Eventually you'll learn that the OT Forum is home to some of the shallowest thinkers the world has ever produced, and we're damn proud of it. We have worked long and hard to achieve a level of idiocy that other forums can only dream of.

The one thing we don't do down here (well, very often at least) is serious. If you expecting some profound insights into the human condition here, then hoo boy, have you ever come to the wrong place.

There are only two commandments down here (apart form the rules under the "sticky" post at the top of the board) and they are.

1 You must not take yourself too seriously.

2 The main activity down here is laughing at Claude Whitacre. Whereas we all enjoy a good laugh at anything and everything, the one thing that unites us all is laughing at Claude. At every possible opportunity you must take the piss out of him. This is law and it must be adhered to. Failure to comply will result in alienation and ostracism from the regulars.

      ~

Every thread in the OT forum, irrespective of how it begins, eventually degenerates into poking fun at Claude. This thread is proof of that. We're only eight posts into the thread and it's already begun.

Shallow thinkers!!! No, not really, we have just learned over the years, not to put up a serious post on something new agish, as the inevitable, "this is crap", and "prove it", will surface!

I have put up dead serious stuff, and had a heated argument with the resident skeptics. Which, still don't believe it, no matter what you say you have seen!

Then it usually goes down the "we have tried, but they are beyond help", or your experience is delusional, no matter how much you say it wasn't

Then the 4 letter words, and subsequent, mods closing down the thread results!

So yeah, you will quickly learn down here, that skeptics are F*,...ahem, closed minded to the extreme, and people that have experienced weird stuff are apparently weird, or on recreational drugs, or smoked to much pot, or ate too many magic mushrooms, or ate too much chocolate!

I would love to give a serious answer to this one, backup with experiences, but couldn't bother with the subsequent crap!

But l will get serious, and say that....

Becoming self aware of self, removes the shackless, of life and death, and removes the mystery of what am l, and what is the reason!

To put it in a nutshell!

Isn't it obvious the purpose in life is to live? I always thought that was self explanatory.

Now, if you asked what I did on purpose in life, then I'd supply you with a completely different answer.

With that being said, then Claude's purpose in life is to be a human dart board and most of the men here, to be human darts.

As for the women here, our purpose is to roll eyes at the men being human darts and at Claude the human dart board...or thank them depending upon our mood at the time

I like your answer better, although I was going to say something similar.. His post read like something I would say when I was 18, and thought I was a deep thinker. At least he didn't use "Quantum Physics" or "Temporal Mechanics". I would have worked in, "Ubiquitous", "Transitory", and "Omnipresent".

Pedantic. I also would have shoe horned in the word Pedantic....maybe Gestalt and Zeitgeist.
I also may have gone for the Grand Slam, and used Epistemology.

If you ever want to read a book that is nothing except such dribble, read Dianetics. The only book so full of BS that it purposely obscures meanings with psychobabble, and then puts the definitions of all its big words...at the bottom of each page. I was astounded by its ability to sound like deep thinking, without any actual deep thinking....for hundreds of pages.

I read a couple of Erhard biographies. Same pond, different fish. There is also Silva Mind Control, Primal Scream, Transactional Analysis. I used to read these books, to analyze the way they sold the core ideas.

Dan Kennedy tells a story of how he talked to Erhard once. Kennedy asked Erhard to describe EST in one sentence. Erhard said "We preach independence, and breed dependence". A sound system for any Guru.

Not that I'm an expert on any of this, but it seems to me the purpose of life, meaning all life, is the continuance of its species.

The purpose of an individual human life is whatever the human chooses for itself. If there is a higher purpose than that, it would seem to be overridden by free will.

If you were to ask "what is the purpose of your life" you'd completely different answers from many of us.

I tried reading that when I was young. I never finished it and don't remember much about it, other than I could never read more than a handful of pages at a time. L. Ron Hubbard was a "different" kind of cat.

I suppose that l shouldn't answer this, (especially after having some cake) but l will risk it!

Well, Autruism will only get you so far, understanding the relationship between Ying and Yang, and cultivating that aspect in self or through the opposite polarity will speed up self awareness, and lead to the conditions expressed above!

The source can be experienced, eventhough the ego self can put a lid on it, but the ego puts a lid on most things?

The ego see's a can of worms, and the true self see's, conscious energy bundle's, associated with energy states that gives the illusion of matter!

That is all that there is, centralized energy bundles, creating consciousness, within a heavier energy matrix representing matter. And this conscious energy has and is evolving through all states, in order to become self aware of self.

Doesn't matter if you take the red pill or blue. they all lead eventually back to source!

There you go, that should be deep enough, and hopefully the skeptics will just think that l have overdone the cake?

Yes, the Guinness Pub in Melbourne is supposed to be the best in AU. And l have seen it, so it would be a good place to get used to overseas pubs, but l am not fussed with green beer!

Awful lot of work, yes and no, becoming aware through certain practices and experiences, is interesting and fun. Spending every day not knocking everything is near impossible, but it helps, from what l have heard anyway!

It also leads to less suffering through self awareness that source energy cannot have lack!

I'm gonna have to write a book if l keep this up, phew!

A woman I worked with was devoted to "primal scream". She was such an advocate she would offer to "come over and help you learn the release of a primal scream". I don't know if she was 'into' the book or just screaming...and didn't want to know more.

I didn't want to be rude and didn't know the woman well - when she offered "help" to me I thanked her but told her my dog bit anyone who raised their voice in my house. Couldn't think of anything else and didn't want to say "are you nuts"?....

I had a sales rep working for me that was really into Transactional Analysis. I bought a book on it (I'm OK--You're OK ), and read it. It made some sense, but I couldn't figure out how to use it in selling. And every part of my training him, was translated, by him, into Parent, Adult, Child.... He desperately wanted everything to fit into that mold.

I had another rep that was really into EST. In fact, he spent thousands of dollars on a 2 week program of exercising, sweating, and fasting. He was a reasonably bright young man, but I couldn't get him to concentrate on the job. Every day was "another discovery he wanted to share with Claude...all day". And it was all EST.

Honestly, I gave deep consideration to starting my own philosophical cult (in my late 30s). I had a few friends that really thought I should do it. I decided not to for two reasons; 1) lack of necessary ambition, and 2) I would hold anyone in contempt that would join such a nonsensical movement. The fact that I would be benefiting wouldn't matter.

Their is no purpose to anything. The Universe, Multi-Verse, any extra dimensions imagined or real (whatever) simply exist.

Whatever we say about having a purpose is irrelevant. We are just part of it, and since "IT" has no purpose, neither do we.

              Claude, I hear you.

I used to really think that. And I am not saying it is not a valid concept. It is.

But I remember a conversation with a good friend of mine. I told him that all you have in Life is your Name and Word . And that is the Legacy that will remain.

He then countered that by saying he was looking at photos of his descendants from early 1900s.

And continued by saying he knew none of the names of the people. Or what they did or whether they were honest and good.

Well that made sense to me. So legacies do not really matter in long term, right ?

But then I started to realize something. My grandfather was just a good man. He believed
in being motivated by Love and Kindness.
I heard that this Trait all started with his father who I never knew or met and cannot even tell you his name

Same thing with my Mom. Just someone who people flock to because of kindness. Not so much my Dad.

But I get it from my Mom. Part genes, part exposure to her kindness constantly when I was a kid.

I started seeing what I have with my kids. They may never know my granddad or his dad for that matter. Pictures of them will probably mean nothing to them. They won't know their names at all.

But I can sleep pretty good at night knowing that I contributed in passing that Trait down my lineage to them and hopefully it will continue.

Also, I don't mean to embarrass you , Claude. But I think you care and show compassion as much as anyone on this Forum. I know you downplay it and deny it sometimes. But I honestly do not even think you realize some of the compassion you display here on a regular basis to other Members.

That's a pretty good Legacy. Even if it doesn't last for the entire 20 year membership at Warrior Forum

Anyway, sorry to get too sappy. I know most in here don't want to go down that path so I will stop LOL

No. Not sappy at all. I know what you mean. I love looking at old photos of my grandparents and their parents too. It brings back memories. The stronger the link, the stronger the chain.

I was really just playing with Ianfear. Although 100 years is several generations.

I remember once thinking, "When my grandfather was a boy, he knew a man, who was alive, when Lincoln was President." .

Honestly, I always thought my purpose was to make my son stronger, and smarter than I was. If I had a function in life, that's it. And truthfully, I think that my value is measured by how I affect the lives I leave behind. It's why I write books.

But at the same time, I don't feel I was born with a purpose.

I didn't think your post was sappy at all. And who the heck am I to judge anyway?

Oh my gosh,I do the same myself.

I remember my great grandmother. She died in 1972 at 102. I remember just bits and pieces of her in her bed. But I start to think that she probably knew of people in the Civil War and directly heard stories about the fighting and what not. And as much as I hate to say and am shameful about it , she probably knew of slaves that her family had owned and maybe had some communication with them or her parents at least did when they were in bondage.

                  Very fascinating.

                  A question ?

And I was going to make a Thread about this. But do you ever think about your parents and how they were like when they were your current Age ? What they looked like , where they were in Life, mindset etc..etc..

Its kind of scary to think my Mom was my age in 1982. I think of her as so much older than me but my recollections of 1982 are so vivid and clear and my picture of her at that time is so clear

Sure, I've thought about it. And I think about everyone, at any age, and how they behave.

At 60? That's pretty old. I was at the beginning of middle age, when they were my age. So I remember them well. I'm not like them, but I have a good idea of how they thought. I'm more interested in what they were like when they were young.

I see 65 year old matronly women, with tight buns in their hair, who wouldn't swear if their life depended on it. When they were 20 years old, they were like every other 20 year old girl. I have one aunt left, out of six. Aunt Karen. I asked her once if she and her sisters were loose when they were young. She told me a few tales, that shattered the image I had of the little old ladies they would become. You know, the girls that make out, behind the bleachers at high school? Well, there existed in 1955 as well.

Every generation thinks that kids were different when they were young. But I think we just grow through stages in our life.

I remember thinking how old my grandfather was, how slow he moved, how much he complained. He didn't think us kids were funny, and he didn't have much patience. He was a good guy though. He would tell us how different he was at our age.

And now, I'm 5 years older than he was, the last time I saw him. And guess what? I'm him.

And every old person you know, was once 20 years old. And they drank, got laid, and caused trouble.

I've even fantasized about seeing my Dad when he was 20 or so. What would he be like?
Would I like him? Was he smart? cool? trouble? What were his parents like when they were young? I suspect, a lot like we were.

                    Interesting stuff.

Other than How To Win Friends And Influence People, I thought Psycho-Cybernetics was very good. But I haven't read it since I was 18 or 19.

I went through that phase as well. I read just about anything and everything to try and find "meanng" from Das Kapital and Mein Kampf through to the Holy Bible as well as more familiar books such How to Win Friends..., etc. I tried on several occasions to read Atlas Shrugged, but had to give up, even though I was able to get through Marx and Hitler's tomes, Rand's work was just turgid beyond belief, and I gave up.

Looking back on it now, I probably wasn't really trying to find any meaning at all, I probably just wanted to appear intellectual to my peer group. I thought they would think I was smart, when in reality they probably just thought of me as being a smart-arse.

                          What a moron.
Yep. I plead guilty to that as well. Sadly only hindsight and time allows us to see reality.

I read most of Atlas Shrugged, but it was like swimming through oatmeal. Even her books on Objectivism were incredibly boring. I read a lot of Nietzsche back then, as well as Plato.
I kept it all to myself. At 20, I had a beard and smoked a pipe. It was a mask.

And I was going to make a Thread about this. But do you ever think about your parents and how they were like when they were your current Age ? What they looked like , where they were in Life, mindset etc..etc..
Was just talking about this yesterday with someone. For most of my adult life my mother would tell me I'm just like my father. My father had me late in life (he was 58 when I was born) so I was 4 when he was my current age. I know he led an interesting life and lived by his own rules (I still have part of the still he built during prohibition). Learning was an addiction to him that he fed daily.

Oh, Okay guys, well if we're going to get all serious and stuff...

I determined my purpose a while back and wrote it down lest I should ever forget.

I think I've shared it here before, but here goes...

My purpose is to wisely use the gifts and talents that lie within me to not only better myself, but to help my fellow man in any way that I can, giving unselfishly when I am asked and even when I am not if I see a need, but also having the wisdom to know when some would take advantage of it and gently ease out of that situation trying not to offend, and yet recognizing at times that I must stand up in righteous indignation.

I am here to be a blessing to all that I encounter, giving all that I am able with what I myself have been given. And it is my hope that I touch as many people as possible along the way whether it be easing some pain, cheering some up with just a smile, to give support, comfort, and help some to gain understanding when they feel lost, defeated or confused. And hope that in so doing, I show a glimmer of the love of my creator.

I am traveling down the path that I have been set upon intent on fulfilling all that I have been commissioned to do so that when my journey here is through, I can be rewarded with the words, Well done! I am continually going to the next level as I learn, implement and share the lessons on the present one.

All of this pertains to my personal life as well as in the business world. It is the same in both for I am who I am...

Note: I did not intend to offend anyone, so if you find me offensive, I apologize that I made you feel that way, but I don't apologize for who I am.

I read Atlas Shrugged at 16 or so - was terribly impressed....read it again at 20 something and said "oh well". Skipped the sermon in the middle the second time - that helped.

Read cybernetics before I was 20 - don't think I ever finished it...it just bogged me down after a while. I remember "oh wow" turned "geez" fairly quickly on that one.

I wonder if I had read DIANETICS when I was a teenager, if I would have been impressed? I think it has a lot to do with where you are in life when you read these things.

I read Think And Grow Rich, when I was about 21 and got little out of it. Again at maybe 30-35...And finally at about 40, I read it, and got something out of it.

Usually, it's the other way around. Things sound profound when you are younger, and then not so much when you get older. or maybe it takes more to impress us.

Yes, read Think and Grow Rich, a few times, but apart from Andrew Carnegie, giving a good speech to some oil sociopaths and making a trillion dollars, (can't remember, that exact amount, probably100 billion) l didn't get that much from it.

Probably got a lot more from Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Like you l tried to read the Dianetics, one, but couldn't take the thousand points to saying something basic crap.

Talk and Grow Rich is another classic, that l used to good effect a few times, but when it all boils down to making money, then these books have their limits.

I read it twice too - I no longer know how I feel about Ayn Rand - but I loved the book though I actually preferred The Fountainhead and We the Living - We the Living brought me to tears at the end.

These days, I am learning about some my own descendents. My wife loves her genealogy. She did her own family back 8 generations and has started on mine. Turns out I have family that traces back in this country to 1743 (so far). Here I thought my entire family all came over in the early 1900's, but it turns out that I am officially a "Son of the American Revolution". Well, what that means, I have no idea, but all of the information my wife found has been interesting reading, and has also sparked my interest in my ancestors.

So, maybe in 250 years someone will dig up information on me - and get a hardy laugh perhaps .

It all depends on how you read it. If you can take away the concept of a creator for a second you will find what I stated gives you ultimate freedom....

You can make of it what you will, it's a colossal adventure playground for you to explore and enjoy, act out dramas and have fun.. Ultimate entertainment, ultimate stimulation and learning, ultimate creativity.

You can not really destroy or hurt anything or any one, not really, ultimately, nothing really dies, it just changes it's shape, form and composition. Still a part of the all.

You will not ultimately be judged or punished for anything, There is nothing ruling you.

You are looking at it all with beliefs, indoctrination's and emotions, so, it may sound heartless to you. I am just looking at it with all that stripped away. You could say that simply to exist and be a part of that existence is all there is and all the purpose you need.

It's a totally objective view, so you need to step outside everything you have ever been taught, felt, and experienced to look at it that way. Actually quite difficult.

Well sometimes you don't have to understand things to learn from it. For example you don't understand why your mind thinking of what you are thinking but you are learning from it.

Sometimes you don't understand why you are acting in mysterious ways but you are learning from it.

I understand there are quite a few opportunities to become an England one day cricketer. A fine young devil like you might even make captain.

On second thoughts, even a president doesn't get as much bad press as an England cricketer. Even the most incompetent president does at least one thing right. English cricket, nothing right.

      Yeah, go for president instead.

        ????????

It was a play on the word "purpose".

The porpoise wants to be president. I certainly don't.

And WTF has cricket got to do with it? Put an extra spoon of coffee in your cup today by any chance?

PS , , , thanks for the "young" compliment. I wish.

I realized one night that I do not have any real purpose other than to be happy, so long as my own happiness does not interfere with the happiness of others.

The problem is that whatever makes us happy is unique to all of us and is constantly changing.

That night was very important for me because the way I structured my life fundamentally changed - the goal was no longer to become 'rich' necessarily, but just to become happy. I began to crave freedom more than luxury, and I focused a lot of energy on maximizing happiness from non-material things.

All in all I think it made me a better person.
