Yep. Microsoft is morphing itself into a cloud based company with a subscription based income model.

A smart transformation if they can pull it off. It looks like they are doing well so far.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

But, after one year of having a 'free' copy you will have to pay?

Because it says it will be free for one year?

As Joe said above MicroSoft is becoming a subscription service.

It's a sound business decision. It smoothes out earnings, eliminates piracy and brings existing pirates into the fold where they can actually start paying for software like everyone else.

Am I happy about it? Not really, but I'm not unhappy about it either. I'll resist it for as long as they keep providing updates for Win7, which probably won't be too long by the look of it.

The old "give away the handle, and charge for the razor blades" is a sales technique as old as time and really shouldn't surprise anyone on a marketing forum.

Why do garden gnomes smell so bad?
So that blind people can hate them as well.

Actually there is a whole lot of misunderstandings about this. Windows is NOT going to a subscription model. The year is the time you have to upgrade. Once you do you pay nothing more for the life of the system you have installed it on.

The next generation of Windows: Windows 10

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost.
So theres no gotchya (except that you won't be able to move a license from one machine to another). The only time you end up paying again for windows is when you get a new machine/CPU.

They are doing this because eventually everyone upgrades when they get a new system anyway. This move along with their universal app code base allows them and all MS developers to do away with having to support multiple versions and woos more developers to place software on their phone and tablet devices since they can write one application and run it across desktop, phone and tablets without having to worry about compatibility issues from various versions.

Let me get this straight! They are PUNISHING me for being LEGIT? I mean a PIRATE with an illegal version of 7 can upgrade but I, with a LEGIT copy of vista or XP or 2000 CAN'T?

I don't recall if Ihave adequate 2000 computers at this point, but I DO have XP and vista!
