I don't really participate much in Gun threads anymore, let alone start them.

There is a very good chance that this law will pass.

Just a link I found, one of many: Lubbock Democrats host 'Keep Guns Off Campus Rally' at Texas Tech | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

I work for a large Community college in Texas (non student admin buildings) and the wife works at one of our 7 campuses with about 9000 students in attendance. she is to say the least, apprehensive.

The volatility of young people's tempers often flares up and with guns, well, need I say more.

We have already had some incidents and injuries over the last couple of years, once with a gun (not currently allowed) and another with a box cutter. We had huge TV coverage, helicopters, SWAT teams, you name it.

Ok, a lot of you have guns and defend the right to own them, but allowing them on campuses is a Powder Keg. Agree?

Does the campus post that it's a "gun free zone?" If so, it's inviting trouble if at least the teachers and staff aren't allowed to carry.

If you were a criminal looking to shoot up some people, where you rather go to have the most devastating effect - a gun free zone where you KNOW nobody will shoot back at you, or a place where you're not quite sure if anybody will be armed or not, or a place that advocates legal gun carry?

    I know where I'd go!

A few minutes ago, I had a brief conversation with a cop who helps police our campus. We have several. His 45 was in it's holster on his belt.

He said, well, if someone started toting a gun and shooting, and the police where called over, and everyone else had pulled out their gun to defend themselves, that's going to be a little confusing, especially if someone tries to shoot the perpetrator, misses and shoots someone else by mistake.

Unlike schools, there are no rigorous checks when you go in, and even if their were, ok, you have a concealed gun, got a gun license, ok, off you go.

      Crazy.

All I have to say really, it will make my working life and especially the wife's, that little bit more dangerous.

While I agree in theory about labeling "gun free zones" - I don't think students carrying weapons on campus is an answer to anything.

That's why you have campus security and campus police. On many campuses, those security people were not armed in the past. I know that was true at my school and at my sons' colleges. I think that has changed on many campuses and I agree with the change.

There are many things that can be done before arming people in schools. Locking classroom doors while class is in session - auto locking exterior doors that are ENGAGED while school is in session - cameras that monitor anyone entering the building during class hours and perahps monitor hallways, too...are just a few.

With the exception of locked and monitored doors - nothing being proposed would have stopped the majority of school shootings.

No, I don't think I'd want the students carrying, but I'd be fine with teachers and staff.

You can't smoke on campus but you can carry a loaded gun.

    Makes sense.

Yeah, as long as it's not a smoking gun. :-)

How about a gun cigarette lighter?

I'm not very comfortable with students carrying guns in school either.

I mean in some federal buildings we're told no cell phones allowed, so why not no guns in school? Students carrying in school is very scary!

The best would be if I am allowed to carry, but not the other people.

But here in the Good Old US of A....

          OK, I got nothing.
