I hope I didn't contribute to their absence.

      Please come back.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

I hope Sal doesn't use that story. I didn't believe it the first time I said it.

Maybe the two of them have gone all "Thelma & Louise" on us. It was bound to happen.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

Sal's hard drive died - see this thread : http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...eeds-help.html
Terra was last seen before Easter, I believe - hopefully they are both okay - I miss them too

I pretty much know Hey Sal's story, needs a new puter. Probably wrestling with the fact that her dead hard drive is going to cost hundreds to yield it's data if it can be accessed at all. None of those cheap alternatives work, yep, been through this experience with a friend of mine. She spent 300 bucks in the end and only got 80 percent back. thing is, she never used it.

So, a new computer and a small learning curve and I hope you wrote those passwords down and had the important stuff backed up!

I recently had it the other way round. Computer died and it took great effort and much bending of metal to get the hard drive out (Because HP, in their infinite wisdom had decided to bury it at the bottom of the machine, pretty inaccessible) Anyway, recently put it in my new one, a Dell and it all works. Main thing is a couple of programs I wish to get and somehow, transfer all my email folders from Windows Mail on the old one into Outlook 2007. There is no browse feature in Outlook 2007 when you want to Import emails, folders etc. Grrrrrrr

Yep, l back up everything, on my external Seagate 3 TB hard drive.

I intentionally bought the biggest one, so it should be as reliable as the one in my PC, (which seems to last forever).

So if my Laptop dies, (which it shouldn't, most reliable on the market) l only need to fix it and reinstall the OS, Or buy a new one, groan!

Which will have a newer version of Windows so you cant really install the old OS on it. Why would you want to anyway. Best just to store the files you have created and installable versions of the software you use. Hope it works on the new OS. There is no easy answer to all this, things move so fast.

Drives lasting forever is also a big fallacy, even your backup one, roll on the solid state ones which are probably more reliable will get cheaper and bigger over time.

Don't count on it. Those large multi disk usb externals don't seem to last as long.
I have lost 2 Western Digitals and 1 seagate in the last year.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think i have had any external

Backing up externally is nice, but people generally do it in case of hardware issues. You should also give consideration to fire and theft. I have two 1TB internal drives in my old Mac Pro that are mirrored. I have a 1TB external drive that I back up to, but whenever I leave the house, it goes into the gun safe. I also have a Seagate 1TB pocket drive that goes with me where ever I go.

The new Mac Pro is backed-up to a 1 TB SSD pocket drive that goes with me everywhere. That way, if everything is ever stolen, or lost in a fire, I have only lost hardware, which is insured for full replacement cost.

Additionally, I backup everything off site through a service called CrashPlan. Every hour it automatically updates any file changes to a server in CA.

Paranoid? Maybe. But I sleep like a baby and never give data loss any thought whatsoever. Once, 30 years ago I lost everything due to a bad drive. It was a devastating experience. Never again. CrashPlan is the absolute best $5 a month that I have ever spent.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that it can't happen to you. :-)

            Cheers. - Frank

the only diff is i use backblaze and my thumb drives are generic.

I live and die by my code. It only took one major loss for

And (sorry, copywriters), on top of everything else you have the ultimate satisfaction of being able to say, "Damn, I'm as smart as Big Frank." lol

Yes, one data loss incident is generally enough for anyone with an IQ over room temperature.

Well, if l had to buy a new Laptop, l can always gutter out the new, possibly crap OS, and put W7 back on.

Or upgrade some of the software, as long as it is 32bit, or is it 64, well the old one, it will probably behave with old software?

I said "Taller" and then it looked too much like a standard joke. Not enough "Cringe", So I made it more cringe worthy.
The great thing about insult jokes, is that they aren't real. So....I had nobody in mind, because the entire joke was a self encapsulated fragment of thought.

But, now that you mention it. I could have meant literally anyone here, except WC.

The great thing about insult jokes, is that they aren't real. So....I had nobody in mind, because the entire joke was a self encapsulated fragment of thought.

But, now that you mention it. I could have meant literally anyone here, except WC.

(I picked WC, because I think he can take an unprovoked insult. We'll find out)

    Worried.
I saw the comments when I got back in here that she was gone and called her. Got her answering machine. Left word for her to call me back. Last time I talked to her she was reading suggestions about what happened to my computer and she was walking me through some tests that someone posted links to in her thread about me needing help. She was okay then. If I find out she's not - I'll let people know, but she's probably recovering from Easter family stuff.

BTW - nice avatar change. You look friendly.

Just talked to Terra. She's fine - will be back online probably Monday. She had multiple things going on, such as an allergy reaction to testing a doctor was doing, a nephew that cracked his head open and was in the hospital (okay now), and of course, Easter with a family full of rugrats.

so that's the gossip. Is everyone okay now?

Terracide is the best game that lays out in six degrees of freedom style, in a alike way in which the player is typically cruising about levels until they locate an enemy to attack, although player is given on screen objectives which are required to be finished to keep on.
