A 21-year-old man named Kieran McKeefery was shocked when he found £1,245,000 in his bank account. The web designer called his bank, NatWest, and requested them to investigate. However, the staff said that the cash had been deposited by a big investment firm and it was their job to take it back. The man spent 10 days deciding whether he should use the extraneous cash or not before the investment firm noticed their mistake and reclaimed their money.

McKeefery, from Barnsley, said that he was tempted to spend the money but he had read stories about people spending money erroneously deposited in their accounts and getting in trouble. He further said that he spoke to his partner and she advised him not to touch the money. The bank told McKeefery that they had made the request to the payee’s bank and he had to wait. Fortunately, the money was removed from McKeefery’s account. However, the cash had left him with £204 interest and he didn’t have to give it back.

I have had tens of thousands of pounds unexpectedly turned up in my bank accounts in the UK before and always informed the bank and gave it back. There is nothing surprising here. If you spend the money, then you are committing a criminal act. People who have done it before have been jailed as a result.

WOW! I have had 10s of thousands STOLEN from me, BY THE BANK!! I really only tried hard enough to get $10,700 back. ONE bank STOLE $10,000 AGAIN!!!!!!!! I asked them WHERE they put it, and they INSISTED on CHARGING me $10 to get the answer!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY! AT THE TIME, they were THE BIGGEST BANK IN THE US!!!!!!!!

I told them that THEY were responsible, and that THEIR job is tracking the money! They CLAIMED they would do it for FREE BUT, "mysteriously" ANOTHER $10 was missing from my bank account! I called them on it, and managed to getall $10010 back. So WHERE did they put it? In their investment arm which was, physically, about 15 feet from the teller that I was demanding to help me!

The OTHER $700 they(then the 2nd or third largest bank in the US) said that I never deposited, though I ALWAYS did, I HAD the receipt, and they had it ON MY STATEMENT the previous month! I showed them the receipt and they said "Next time, USE A TELLER"! I told them this WAS A TELLER, at THAT window(points to window), and THERE she is NOW! They "PROVISIONALLY" credited my account, and I *******PERMANENTLY******* CLOSED my account taking ALL the money with me!

I wish someone would throw THEM in jail!

The only thing that surprises me is that it took him 10 days to decide not to spend it...

Should of kept it in there for a bit longer and claimed a bit more interest... It's not like the bank can reverse the transaction without approval. Wounder what the interest is on 1.2mil a day! Obviously you give it back before all the court cases!

If this happened to me, I would go into the bank, with a bandanna covering the lower part of my face, a cowboy hat one, and a drawn six shooter. I'd put a sack on the counter and say, "I want all the money out of Claude Whitacre's account. All of it! And don't call the police for 5 minutes!".

Then I would get on my horse, and ride away.

That way, I don't have to give back the money.

      My plan is foolproof!

It's an interesting idea though I think your getaway would fall flat.

I agree. Definitely do not spend a cent of it. But I would let them figure it out and let the interest accrue
