Just curious: with indefinite life extension on the frontier of science, who here thinks it's a good idea to "live forever"? Who thinks it's a bad idea? Who's neutral? In either case, explain why you feel this way.

Would ultimately be boring living hundreds of years in the same dimension.

Just the the prospect of eternal lanfears and Claudes going back and forth barbing each other would be enough to reintroduce a fatal disease to the human population.

Not for me. I'm easily bored, and I have a short attention span so it would be unhealthy if I had to live forever. Now that you think of it, aren't some people already 'living forever' or extending life, with the help of plastic surgery of course.

Ah so plastic surgery can now replace the vital organs of the body, the central nervous system or the brain? I think you will find it's just superficial

Indefinite life extension is on the frontier of science, in the same way flying like Superman is on the frontier of science.

But would I do it? Absolutely. But if I had a choice, I'd hold out for the "Flying like Superman".

Almost no one, I'd imagine - since most of us are reasonably well educated, possess a fair amount of common-sense, tend to be well-read and for the most part deal in a reality-based existence.

You'd be surprised by the progress they're making in labs.

I'ts ironic: Around the 1930s (give or take 10 years), the TOP science resource in the world said "we wouldn't have the ability to travel to the moon for another 200 years". Heavy stuff...we managed to do it in 20.

And that applies to life extension in zero ways.

Life extension (to hundreds of years) is more than technology. Every cell in the body is built to divide...and eventually mistakes are made in the process. Those mistakes cascade..and that's why we get white hair, heal more slowly, and die.

We are built to evolve. And in order to evolve, previous generations have to die.

I see, you are a believer. But we (meaning the planet) aren't going to invest huge amounts of time in living hundreds of years. The problems are, at present, insurmountable.

The hardest problem to solve is keeping a brain healthy for hundreds of years. Forget about disease, Brain cells die, and as an adult, they die faster than they can reproduce.

To live hundreds of years, you would have to remain in perfect health, and never get a disease. All disease would have to be wiped out. Do that first, then try to live forever.

And....you are not going to change your mind, until you grow old and die...like everyone else.

The point I was trying to make is that we "don't know what we don't know". As far as we know, we're on the brink of a HUGE scientific breakthrough. Sure, there's probably a very good chance that you and I are both going to die (maybe 99%). However, with the ever growing evidence in the scientific community, a cure is POSSIBLE within our lifetime.

As far as brain cells are concerned, they DON'T divide (just like our heart cells). So basically as our brain and heart cells die, they don't get replaced. This is something that can easily (okay, maybe not "easily", but certainly possible) with stem cell therapy.

In 2014 a woman got cured of MS from stem cell therapy. In the same year a 4-year old boy receives the worlds' first 3D printed organ (pancreas). That seems like pretty inspiring evidence, wouldn't you agree?

Do you have any idea why they divide? Life extension is as simple as making the cells divide at much slower pace. It's not about the technology, but healthy environment (very little or no radiation), healthy lifestyle and food. Eat less = live longer. (Video at the bottom)

Do you have any clue why they die?
Alcohol - damages the erythrocyte membranes by dissolving lipids which they are made of. So the cells stick together causing the grape cluster effect. The clusters of stuck blood cells clog capillaries in the brain causing the brain cells to die from the lack of oxygen.
Junk food - before causing the heart attack it will first make you lose your ability to reproduce, lose some brain cells (by clogging capillaries) and only then clog the bigger arteries.

Or to live hundreds of years you have to be immune to diseases. Not much about technology, but healthy food. Technology on the other hand could be used to remove radioactive Potassium-40 isotope from the nature and human body. When K40 decays in our body it releases radioactive particles. Each particle travels the distance of 6 millimeters, ionizes over 200,000 atoms in its path, and as a result 1125 cells die. The dead cells have to be replaced. Well, duh, just remove the K40 from the body.

Aw, the cute evolution theory. Yeah, we are indeed evolving into a brand new species according to Bill Maher.

              You're absolutely right...they don't even come close

BUT....(always gotta have a but here and there LOL)....the principles of engineering can be transitioned over into the biomedical sciences. For instance, in engineering, it's ROUTINE to build things without fully understanding how they work (we often learn the physics behind these machines decades after their conception). Aging could be viewed the same way...we don't need to know exactly what causes it...we just need to find a way to intervene (and update the textbooks LATER so to speak).

Rockets are a good example. When we built them, there were still huge gaps in our understanding of physics. We knew that certain designs worked, we just couldn't mathematically describe why.

During my freshman year of college, my engineering professor explained how this was a consistent theme across the industry. Believe or not, there's still no unified theory on how bicycles work (silly example of course).

Wrong. It doesn't make you look cool, it just makes you cool.

The only reason I'm not getting as much action as I used to is because I have significantly raised my rates.

Given enough time, everything that is technically possible is somewhat inevitable. The word belief does not come into play. All of "us" are going to die, though.
And if you actually want an answer beyond the"mental masturbation" category, there are science forums.

We may die, but I think there's a pretty good chance we won't.

Right? I watch how some people live and I'd be glad to die of that boredom - yet they want to live longer? I'd be ready to go and hoping things were more interesting for me on the other side.

Not to sound cynical but what if there is no other side.

Would that change your mind? Would it change the way you lived everyday ?

Iam not saying there is not. I believe there is but just for arguments sake !

Crime would go through the roof. Most of our punishments are gauged toward losing time. if we had an endless supply we'd be willing to burn some of it.

Let's pretend that we eventually discover a way to live 1,000 years. All of us. Now what happens?

Wealthy people, continue to do what made them wealthy. So we end up with a very rich subculture...........and everyone else... who works for them. I know we have rich people now, but imagine people wealthy enough to buy countries.

Evolution would stop, at least in humans.

How would a 500 year old think? Would they have the same youthful exuberance of a 20 year old? Would they be more like the average 60 year old?

Imagine being 500 years old. What would you remember? Your whole life? The last 100 years? The last 20? How do we remember now?

How would society work? The older we get, the more we are polarized in our worldviews. Would that improve with extreme age? Would we continue learning? Most of us don't read a nonfiction book after we get out of school. So we would have people, hundreds of years old...that aren't learning. How would that figure in?

Innovation comes from bright hungry young minds. Changes in culture, technology, language...tend to come from the young.

Would we still get married? We would have no need for children. Would we still have sex?
Would we still have the same testosterone levels as young men? (Or estrogen levels if a woman) If we do, why? We no longer need to procreate.

If you are middle aged right now, you know how it's the young people that have to show us the new technologies...to get us up to speed? Take them away, now you have a world that has no incentive to change or progress.

These are just imaginings. Who knows.

First, you're being a very nice guy. Welcome to the forum.

And I don't mean this personally, only as a response to your idea.

Saying you want to stay away from science forums, because they are too logical.....indicates to me that your ideas (that you shared there) were faulty.

Pick an idea, any idea. If you want to know if your idea is real, find intelligent people to attack it. Force others to give you valid examples, of why your idea won't work. Welcome attacks on your logic.

Why? Because if you seek the truth, that's what you'll end up with.

People here are nice? Yes. But one reason they are nice, is because most don't understand the science. They don't see the hundreds of reasons why extending our life hundreds of years is far more difficult than it sounds.

When you hear discussions about "the ethics of living so long", it's because the person focussed on what they understand. They understand ethics. The actual process of making us live hundreds of years, is ignored..because it isn't understood.

And it isn't understood, because there is no process to make it happen.

It's like discussions on Traveling back in time. most will talk about the ethics of time travel, or "If you kill your grandfather, you won't be born". Why? Because they don't understand how many nearly impossible ideas have to be right, before time travel is even conceivable.

You're here, because some of us love discussing fanciful ideas. If I wanted to know if my idea really had weight, I'd go to the science forums, and have it ripped apart.

After they hack away at the idea, destroying big chunks of it, blasting my logic...offering stronger alternatives....eventually, what you have left, is a beautiful...shining...theory.

In fact I belong to a group of three rational thinkers (One a complete stranger) who's sole reason to exist it to tear apart each other's ideas. The result? Our ideas and viewpoints become sharper, clearer, tested. The problem with being in love with an idea, is that you start defending it. And that's the end of learning.

Right now, you posts sound like you are a very bright young man, who really really wants this idea to be true.

                              That's a bit of a Red Herring.

There are programs to test designs, by letting the program run, evolving the design to be more efficient. And the resulting "Most efficient design" will be accepted, without knowing the exact reasons it works better.

But those are peripheral to how a rocket works. In simple machines, and chemical compounds (for example) you can accidently find something that works, and reverse engineer it to find the process and causes. And bicycles are extremely simple machines.

The human body isn't simple. And the human brain is the most complex thing we know about. And the brain is where we are.

How do you make the brain, not degrade with time? Many things kill brain calls, and kill the connections they have made, but grow new cells, with the existing patterns intact? If you use stem cells, you would still not replace the patterns made that are memories. You may eventually be able to grow a new brain, genetically identical to the first one, but it would simply be a blank slate....a new person.

And we have that now. They are called children.

Seriously, I suspect I may be the weakest link of the three. One of them is much younger than I am, and she learns much faster. The other one is simply smarter than I am, and uses terminology (He is a stoic logician), that I occasionally have difficulty keeping up with. They really keep my attention.

There's no shame in simply stating, "I've got nuthin." Let it go. lol

I'm confused. I believe the doctor stated that Viagra would keep my pencil hard until I was finished.

First sentence is redundant. second sentence is merely hopeful. Viagra can help but it can't do the impossible. Some oak tree saplings are just gone forever.

No I meant to say redundant - in light of your posting history. However I can understand in your self confessed confused state why you would think that.

Mocking scribbles on a Junior high gym bathroom from your peers does not a poem make. In that case however it was "oats" not "oaks" written on the wall.

I would not advertise where you hang-out if I were you. It could give you a bad name.

Yes - if you were to possess a 'deep, male voice' - I would be very confused. And quite shocked, also. :-)

I understand but it was inevitable. You were bound to meet a male with a deep voice some time. I guess the world would seem a bit off kelter for you realizing not everyone of your gender sounds like you. Even more disturbing when you realize not all men "date" women with deep voices and wow...not all women have deep voices. World paradigm change for you....take deep breaths.

Certainly, not. Your limitations, inadequacies and lack of creative thinking are legend. A simple Google search will prove that.

I had such high hopes for you but alas when put to the test you've just crumbled and melted to sheer drivel under the burden. Taking on Don clearly was the extent of your skills. Forgive me for tasking you with a higher expectation. Just remember, that fat men, with high blood pressure, who don't exercise, and eat junk food all day....live very long lives. (I tell myself that every day)

i just thought of something. If you were going to live 1,000 years.....

And you overate...wouldn't you eventually weigh a ton? More?

If you saved your money, wouldn't you eventually own a country?
And, if you knew Riffle for hundreds of years, at what point would you kill him?

My guess was always.... a few hours after you learned his address.

Oh it is very much possible, maybe not forever but the CEO at Google is talking about extension to 500 years is very much a reality. He is also saying that it could happen as early as 20 years (skeptical there) but extension is very much a reality within the next 50.

I don't see how that could be a good thing. I mean the earth is overpopulated as it is. So, imagine all the new births continuing, but the older folks living on and on. Not a good formula if you ask me.

I'd bet that it's going to cost a few pennies to "prolong life" so i don't think it's something the riff raff have to worry about... (World population, which i agree is out of control and heading for disaster) ergo the masses won't be greatly affected...

That sounds good in theory, but there are quite a few evil wealthy people are there not? Unfortunately wealth and greed do have a tendency to corrupt if a person's qualities aren't stellar to begin with.

You mention population being a problem.

I have a question for you: do you place more emphasis on people who are ALREADY living today (like yourself, your family, friends, etc.) or more emphasis on people who have NEVER been born yet (babies). By saying that overpopulation is going to be an issue, we are approaching the problem with the assumption that we MUST have babies, and that they somehow must "replace" the people who are already alive.

Solving overpopulation is simple: STOP HAVING BABIES!

Not really... It's more an issue of population control, just like nature has controls in place to prevent animal populations from outgrowing their habitat ... If you are already starving with 6 kids you should not be having more....

I don't get how a guy known mostly for building an internet search engine saying something about how long people will believe makes it a reality. Thousands of PHDs in biological sciences have been trying to crack cancer for the last 50 years and though recent signs indicate we MIGHT be close that Sergei will solve death in 50 is ridiculous. I am NOT calling you ridiculous because the media assisted that hypes as they always do such things. " jobs says he is going to solve cancer so".... "Facebook owner comes up with the solution to world hunger while taking a shower"..."could we be close to solving death? Google thinks so"

My friends Death is the great Equalizer.

It doesn't matter if you have billions of dollars in the bank or 1 penny.

It is going to get you sooner or later.

Somehow these billionaires are truly delusional. In their everyday life their billions means they can have and do ALMOST anything to their heart's content.

            EXCEPT cheat death

And that freaks them out to not have any control in that department

Here's a better question to ask:

Let's say that you wake up on your 102nd birthday, are you going to say, "Today is a good day to die. I'm ready". Probably not, right?

Even people who are very old today don't just wake up one day and decide to die- we ALL want to live, regardless of our age (old people just "accept" it because there's nothing they can do about it).

Also, I don't think that many attempting to cure aging (which kills 100,000 people per DAY) is going "low". It's a very righteous thing that's going to end pain and suffering. I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty upset if scientists said, "Okay, we're giving up on finding a cure for cancer. People are living long enough as it is".

None of us get to wake up one day and decide to die that day with the exception of those who commit suicide.

It just doesn't work that way.

No, but what I said was that morals, honesty, wholesomeness, integrity and humanity are reaching lows. Two completely different things.

Just because your life is extended doesn't mean pain and suffering will end. We are talking about human beings after all.

A cure for cancer and indefinite life extension are two completely different things as well, though.

But what if you were as healthy at 102 as you are now? Would you still opt for death?

I don't want prolonged suffering any more than the next person. What science is trying to do is not only help us live longer, but give us more HEALTHY years. If I'm going to live to 150 old and miserable, feel free to kill me now

I believe that I would. Let me explain why...

We work for a living whether it be for someone else or for ourselves.

Then there comes what is called the golden years, the years where we have worked hard and now get to enjoy life without working. We have our retirement plans, social security etc. to use to live off for shelter, clothing, food, entertainment, travel, etc. Just because we'll live forever and not wear out doesn't mean the other things will.

If I were not going to die, I'd have to keep working to support myself and would miss out on that stage in my life where I am just enjoying life, completing my bucket list, etc.

I like life in stages, I like the scene changes and could not stand to have to live forever on just one stage, Scene 1. Eventually, it all may seem like the movie Groundhog's Day. Ya know?

That right there tells me you don't know very much about the subject. I have indeed met people and had a few family members that were ready and wanted to die. You are also assuming a world view that many don't share and don't have to share.

You'd be surprised by the progress they're making in labs.

In fact, I wonder if that isn't part of a natural progression. For example, even at just sixty, I can feel myself getting used to the idea of not being here. Different things take priority; Family, friends. I'm losing interest in business.

And I'm really not the same person I was 20 years ago. I mean, we wouldn't even agree on much. I wonder, if I live to 80, how much different my outlook will be?

That has nothing to do with age. If the wife or even that blown up doll would stop mouthing the word no when you got too close I am sure your zest for life would pick up. We love you. Your appointment with Bill Cosby is next week Friday.

            Don't kill the messenger

I could spend hours spouting about "this evidence" and "that evidence" (I attend about 12 biotech/life extension conferences per year), but let's put it this way...when GOOGLE invests 500 MILLION dollars in life extension/ending aging, you can be pretty sure that it's not for "no reason".

Here's some food for thought (Google this stuff if you're ever interested in learning more). Below are 7 forms of "damage" that occur with age. We already have a systematic understanding of why we age, now it's time to find the most practical route of implementing the solutions. Anyway, they are:

            1. Cell loss, tissue atrophy

            2. Cancerous cells

            3. Mitochondrial mutations

            4. Death-resistant cells

            5. Extracellular matrix stiffening

            6. Extracellular aggregates

            7. Intracellular aggregates

Google "Aubrey DeGrey" and "SENS". You'll find THOUSANDS of research papers on the topic.

              .
Of all this evidence you could allegedly present you selected the fact that a search engine company invested half a billion dollars as proof....that right there says it all. You've got little and nothing. If throwing money at cancer was proof we would lick it in 50 years we would have already and long ago.

I'm not in my 60s or 70s as you seem to imply.I'd be all for real scientific evidence but simply understanding how we age is not scientific evidence that we can stop it in the next 50 years. Frankly I think you are the one in denial. You'd like to think you wont get old and die so you are trying convincing yourself.

And yes you should really do some reading outside of this subject. we are learning almost every month that we do not understand genetics half as much as we think we do. Until we get that down we won't be anywhere near close to stopping death

Lets b e clear here. I don't think anyone thinks its impossible that one day humans won't die. Its your timetable that has little merit.

To be honest CP you did present me with an idea that has me against the idea of living forever. If the answer to the resulting over population is no more children in the world as you suggested - I pass on being "saved". I'd rather we wait until we can populate other planets than live in a world without children.

Beyond the sentimental aspect there are all kinds of ramifications of living in a world where one of the most meaningful relationships no longer exists (if even for just the last generation of inhabitants) and the world is stuck with the same people century after century.

It's definitely a big issue to consider no doubt. But perhaps a little compromise can go a long way. For example, if "Family A" decides to have more children then they should wait until someone from their family dies first. Seems fair, wouldn't you agree?

Even with anti-aging technology left completely out of the equation, over population would still be a HUGE concern (350,000 or so babies are born each day for every 150,000 people who die). The root causes of overpopulation still need to be addressed no matter what...

I feel the same. I love children -
and as far as the indefinite life extension - as long as I don't become a burden to anyone - (my son and his future family) then I would love to live as long as I can - not because I fear death - but only because I too feel like Sal that there is so much to learn - and there is so much that I would still love to do.

A lot of comments have related the question to the body, re old bones, creaky bodies, cancer etc.

If you detach brain from the body you remove most of those problems so what the future and long life may contain is the brain being housed in machines which would remove the need for food well the odd can of oil.

If you consider the joys of the brain, new knowlege, understanding and learning. Think about all the things you would like to know about, which can be achieved with brain living longer in the pursuit of Knowledge. The world today is mainly based on the possession of knowledge, stock exchange, data systems etc. Long live the brain :-)

I was thinking in the pure sense of knowledge rather than the physical, so I envisaged a world of machines.

You would have different levels of machines aided by AI, the top machine being inhabited by a brain, which would be able to use the lower levels of machine to carry out various tasks and being linked to various sensors like video which feed back to the main brain.

It may all seem science fiction but progress is being made all around us in the medical field in using artificial means to replace body parts. Add in computer systems for the financial markets, automation in manufacturing even now we are using driverless cars.

Forever might be too long - but in the event we'd be in decent condition for a proportionate amount of time, I think a few hundred years would be fantastic. There's so much to learn and do here and it's pretty hard to fit it into a mere 80 to 100 years.

      I agree

At a biotech conference I attended last year, I learned about the "Pro Aging Trance". Basically, since death is such a SCARY thing, people try to find comfort in believing that there is no potential cure...sort of like long-term denial in the face of real scientific evidence. It helps them sleep better at night.

I mean, I can TOTALLY agree why people think like this (if I was older I might think the same way). But it's pretty cool to think that even if your'e 60 or 70 today, you still might "live long enough to live forever".

It is inspiring. But it is only evidence that headway is being made in those areas. and they are not life extension.

There is no other side, some here will say it is so, like their lives depend on it, and some through personal experience, know that there is something there, so want to stay down here as long as possible.

No more watching Jupiter rising Claude!

That movie had 15,000 year old individuals who used others to extent their lives. So an insanely wealthy person who is also a power hungry sociopath is also possible!

I don't think we can escape death. Maybe aging, but not death. I mean, everything has an antithesis. For life, it's death.

I definitely think it is possible and ponder this myself on a daily basis. I think much of the reason that we only live the average lifespan that we do now is that we are conditioned to believe this it IS the average lifespan so it limits our true nature and ability.

As far as living forever as a human, I have thought about this and decided that eventually when no one else is here, I would want to go too. But, then I thought about our limitless nature and that I would like to vibrate at such a high level as to travel between realms in whatever form that I choose. Possible? Well, it's all about what you truly believe. Everything has already been created. All possibilities already exist. So, I think I could do it if I got to that point of true limitless power.

      Nancy;

You will fit in here very nicely.

Please ignore Frank. He was burdened with rational thinking, and an intolerance of people with an unlimited nature.
Some are not so burdened, and they will love your post.

But you forgot to mention Quantum Physics. It's important, if you want to be taken seriously.

"Everything has already been created. All possibilities already exist. "....I'll have to remember those. Thanks.

To return the favor, I have two for you, "You and I are exactly the same distance from each other", and "Everything in the past, has already happened.....because of Quantum Physics".

      See what I did there?

          Frank,

You really need to come out of your shell. If only you would let your best inner self shine.....and feel relaxed enough to tell us how you feel....

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.
