OK OK! These AREN'T a dime a dozen, but they ARE 4 for $100!!!!!! This is NOTHING NEW! It started YEARS ago!

BTW this is NOT a desktop computer, in the sense often understood! It is simply a little low power(all sense of the word) computer that has no keyboard or screen. It sits on a desktop NOT because it affords convenience and a facility to access resources and act as a hub, but out of NEED! STILL, this isn't the first, second, third, or even the tenth. It may not even be uniquely in the top 20 or even the top 50.

OH, and they decided to start from SCRATCH, on the OS! Do you realize that there may not be a SINGLE worthwhile computer since 1980, or even earlier, that has EVER done that? M/S started with an O/S that was built in the 70s which was based on one from the 60s. They STILL took from others. Apple did the SAME thing! So did android. And Linux was built on a 60s O/S.

Good luck getting decent software. Ironically, many may end up putting Linux on it to use it.

The desktop computer never really died. You can pick up a fully fledged PC for around $200.00 at Tiger Direct anyway. Perhaps it's just for the lack of internet and the fact it's got an encyclopedia and other software on it?

Correct - you just drop them an email stating, "I would like to purchase a boat anchor." :-)

They want to look like they invented something, or came up with a novel idea. They did NEITHER! The IDEA that THEY claim ownership of is basically a LOW priced computer created for VERY remote agrarian areas like deep in india. You can buy the majority of the guts of such a computer, complete with USB, WIFI, 2GB memory, a 4 core processor, and a REAL USABLE O/S for LESS than $40USD! Plug in a keyboard and a monitor, and you are all set.

The CATCH is that MOST are ARM! It is a good processor and used in almost every phone, and many other gadgets, but it can NOT run M/S Windows. It CAN run android and Linux though. And NOW, intel and AMD are trying to play catchup and coming out with processors that are ALMOST as good in every way, but CAN run M/S Windows as well.

Seems like a good idea, well as long as a smartphone internet connection is cheap also?

Pity they couldn't supply cheap, constant electricity first, much better idea!

The whole mobile vs desktop is stupid.

There's tons of jobs where desktop is the only option same goes for mobile.

That OP link looks like a toy, you're defiantly not able to upgrade hardware.

Really? I think in this new era we were on, that would be too insignificant. Come on, we are now at a time were smartphones dominate even laptop. so why bother "reviving" desktops?

Every single workplace uses desktops for serious productivity. I work in a very large College system. We all use desktops. The Students all use desktops. Most homes have a desktop. Why am I even discussing this?

Oh, and the next time you have to write a serious dissertation on a smartphone or tablet using your pinkies on a touch screen. Good luck with that.

This discourse ( link below) is a few years old but still rings true today methinks. The trend now is smartphone screens are getting bigger and slowly killing off tablets. Laptops are resurgent and for the simple reason they have a keyboard/mouse pad I cant see touch screens replacing the keyboard/mouse at all, except by necessity on smart phones. As for desktops...

Sure, I don't see desktops as being doomed to oblivion like 8-track players, Betamax, or Claude's sex life. However, computer power has reached the point where the masses don't require any more power than they can get from laptops and tablets and, for many, their phones.

Desktops make be cheaper, but the price difference may or may not offset the convenience of a laptop.

Again, power is mostly irrelevant other than for niche uses.

I don't the amount of peripherals being a driver either. same thing with screen size. I can hook my laptop up to my 65 in HDTV or stream to it.

The gamer segment is a driver of niche desktops. But what percentage of global users are gamers? Not enough to drive an entire market.

Repairs? We live in a throw-away society.

Recycling into a NAS or a fish tank? This just shows the author was struggling to come up with 10 items. I'm currently using an old lappy as a NAS, single bay obviously...

I've no opinion on the "creative software" comment. Possibly a good point. Maybe?

Desktops are secure from theft? So's the landscaping boulders in my front yard.

I will concede the upgrade factor. This is a key point, but do the benefits of laptops, tablets and phones outweigh this? Yes.

It may be an age thing. Millennials ruin everything (much as my generation did before them). I don't know a single one who has a desktop. They are the one who'll eventually drive the market. Maybe is somebody develops a "Certified Organic" desktop, they'll find themselves with a hot product.

I think that still, a proper keyboard and a separate mouse are still essential for sustained productivity. As well as a fair sized screen. My supervisor just plugs her laptop into a docking station that gives her all that.

So for now, if your supplying a large office, it comes down to considerations of robustness and durability, upgradability spec, and the all important price of which desktops still outstrip laptops by far.

Perhaps it's just me, but I just cant sit hunched in front of a laptop with it's small screen, built in mouse pad and keyboard for any length of time. and do serious productivity. Perhaps I'm getting old but you said yourself that you go back to your all in one to do Work related stuff.

Yes, for the screen size alone. I could just as well hook my laptop up to a larger monitor. However, the expense was deductible, so I figured I'd try an all-in-one. Eh. I use it about three hours a month.

I do agree with you as far as workplace productivity goes. Although, I've seen several businesses move to docking stations for laptops. Of course, it depends on the job. This was for employees who are on the go and need to bring their laptops with them.

Eventually, only workplaces and hobbyists will have desktops. There will still be a market, but desktops will hardly be "first thought."

I wonder how anyone can enjoy using a tiny little phone compared to a full size desktop monitor. Even a tablet.
