I need some help with deleting a file

Hi all,

I am hoping somebody knows how to help me with this.
I have an icon that appears on my desktop. It's like a shortcut and it's a gif file.

However, if I try to delete it, it says it can't be found and won't be deleted.

I do have a way to temporarily get rid of it. This is by creating another gif file and then drag them back.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Probably virus or spyware.
Use a anti-virus scan it and delete it.

I tried the antivirus scanner and that did not work. I tried renaming it and that doesn't work. The rest of my pc is clean. When trying to rename or delete, it says it can't find the file so it is very strange.

But please keep up the ideas as one has to work, doesn't it?

Ok, I have the solution..Well, 2 things, if the first one does not work, the second one will..

      1) Right click in an empty space on your desktop and select Refresh from the menu. The shortcut may disappear straight away or shortly after, or after rebooting.

      2) Download this freeware tool (green download button) Download Unlocker 1.9.2 - FileHippo.com

Unlocker is its name. That should work.

Try option one first though, quick and easy if it works.

Thanks, Ian. I will give both a go. I have temporarily killed it but I know it will return so I will let you know if I succeed.

What is the icon like? I mean does it look like Word or Excel or something recognizable?

You may want to try something like CCleaner to get rid of any temporary or unnecessary files. Not sure that will work in this case but it's worth a shot.

Ian, the unlocker worked. I don't know if it is a permanent fix but it seems that way so thank you for the tip.

@Mark, I run Ccleaner regularly and that did no good but thanks for the tip anyway.

@tine267...reformatting my hd is something I did NOT want to do as it takes time to put everything back the way you want it but thanks anyway. The unlocker is useful.

I suggest you to use anti-virus for deleting the file. You can use Norton or Microsoft security essential.
