Late last night, just before bedtime, Lil Lexi vomited. We didn't think anything of it because she is just a puppy. Overnight she whined once and I took her out to potty and everything was just like before. She and I went back to sleep.

When she woke this morning, I took her out but after going, she ran right back to the door and whined to go back in. That was unusual, she usually likes to explore first. Once we were back inside, I got her breakfast for her. She wouldn't eat or drink anything. I know it wasn't her new food, because I used a couple of the kibbles as her treats all last evening and night and she liked them just fine.

She didn't want to play at all and she looked sooo sad. I could see it in her eyes. All she did was whimper and want to be in my lap. Twice, she jumped off my lap ran to the door, whined, then instantly squatted for a bowel movement. (On the pee-pee-pad) only about 15 minutes apart and they were very loose stools, but not diarrhea.

I felt so bad for her and just held her in my lap for another hour and she just whimpered lightly and didn't want to give doggie kisses. After that I decided I would just carry her with me and went and checked my e-mail only to find this:

Terra,
Hope all is well with your pup. I wanted to contact you because I just found out today that her litter mate tested positive to parvo. It doesn't mean Lexi has it or will get it, but she most likely is exposed. Please keep a close eye on her. Watch for lethargic behavior, not eating/drinking, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. The pup could show any or all of these symptoms. Most likely, the lethargic behavior is the first symptom to come up. Contact us if any of these occur. We will take the pup and treat it at our expense. Please be vigilant since early detection is important. There is no test for the disease unless the symptoms are present. Contact us if you have any questions. Thank you.
Connie Fleck, Director
Canine Companions Rescue Center

I immediately contacted Connie and she told me to take her to a particular animal hospital, asap. She said go now, I'll call them and they'll be expecting you. I was still in my jammies so I had to get dressed. I set Lexi in her crate and she just laid there whimpering. I threw some clothes on real fast and came back down stairs.

I called for her and she popped up, came to me and gave me a doggie kiss, then she went to her bowl, ate about a quarter of her food and to took two licks of water. She wagged her tail. I thought, maybe she is okay and I'm just freaking out because of the email.

Anyway, I took her there and the 8 minutes of waiting were torturous! I could hear Lexi barking, not whining, but barking, through the door. The test came back positive. She's in the hospital now.

They told me they would keep in touch and that her sister was doing very well. They said it was a good sign that Lexi is still spunky. They said they don't retest and said it could be 3 days, or 5 days, but if it went 7 days, that wouldn't be good.

I'm home now all alone and the house is soo quiet. I miss my baby girl. I don't know what to do with myself...

Parvo, while potentially brutal, is definitely survivable for puppies, especially if caught quckly, which it sounds as if it was.

I realize it's difficult, but the bright side is a puppy with minimal symptoms can kick it in just a few days.

"Often" fatal, but you caught it early and a sibling is doing well. These are facts in her favor. Keep your chin up.

Terra, I'm so sorry, but at least you have gotten her the best of care that you could do. At least in a vet hospital she will get the care she needs to survive this.

I truly hope you can bring her back home again healthy. I assume they can vaccinate her against this but don't know how old she has to be to get it.

Please let us know how she is doing. Please check with the vet hospital on everything you need to do to sterilize your home before she gets back.

You caught it early, so she will probably be fine.

But ring the Vet up every day or so, to keep your own spirits up.

The parvo vaccination is a 3 stepper. She just got her first vaccination on Monday. She's due for another at 12 weeks and the last one at 4 months.

I'll definitely check with them, you can count on it.

I did just sit with my pooch, looked her straight in her beautiful eyes and told her that I love her more than anything in my life or on this planet. Then I showered her with kisses. I still feel sad, though. :-(

Do us all a favor and just shut up! You are insensitive to the point of absolute stupidity and this is not the thread for it!

                        Terra -

I think the rescue group is doing what they can. They notified you as soon as they learned about it - they are taking care of the treatment and you caught it early.

Parvo is bad because puppies are often exposed before they are old enough to have the shot.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - but meanwhile I found an article with some very up to date and interesting info about parvo treatment.

New Protocol Gives Parvo Puppies a Fighting Chance When Owners Can

The success rates mentioned are encouraging so I'll cross my fingers and toes Lexi is in that "cured" group soon.

                        Keep us posted.

I'm wondering why she hadn't been vaccinated by the organization keeping those pups. That's a core dog vaccination given at 6-8 weeks. I'm hoping for the best outcome ...full recovery. Keep us informed.

I forget, but isn't that roughly Lexi's age now? Seems like a case of very unfortunate timing.

I've always understood that pups shouldn't leave their mother until 8 weeks old and have never really seen any other than backyard breeders release them before that. Plus ... it's a rescue organization charging $300 for a pup to include shots and vet care. I just think core shots should have been a done deal before they left.

She got her first vaccination at the center before I got her, but it wasn't the one with parvo. They paid for her first visit to the vet on Monday and she got her second vaccination that included the parvo there. Pups must be 8 weeks before they get the parvo vaccination. She was 8 weeks this past Saturday, I got her Sunday, she went to the vet on Monday and received it. She is on track with all of her vaccinations.

They are also covering the cost of her spay.

This might be a surprise to some people, but I think it's a good thing you got her the vac. It will lessen the severity of the illness. Hopefully, she'll have the will to pull through this without too much else going on.

I agree with Suzanne - for a $300 puppy, they really screwed up. You should get your money back. Put it toward her vet bill. That rescue doesn't sound like they should be in business. At all.

          No! They are excellent!

They informed me immediately when her sibling came down with the parvo. They're paying for all of her care, they even gave me a 30 day guarantee for a full refund if the puppy wasn't a good fit or for any other reason with the option to take another puppy instead. This was at the time of adoption.

That's good to know. Guess it was a stroke of pure bad luck then. She got vet care for it so fast, she'll probably pull through just fine... at least, that's what I'm hoping.

EDIT: I agree with Sal that having the vac for a short time before coming down with this may lessen the virus and help her to get through this faster.

    Terra
Terra - 72 hours. If she lives 72 hours it will be over. I took a dog who's sister had parvo once knowing he was about to get sick. I called a few vets to find out exactly what it is about the virus that kills and duration - it was the dehydration, electrolytes depletion. So when he first vomited and pooped that telltale diarrhea, and acted generally ill, couldn't keep anything down - I had a syringe like eyedropper and started shooting a little pediolite down his throat every 20 minutes. It absorbs faster than water so in small quantities he didn't have time to throw it back up. I set my alarm and did this around the clock for 2.5 days, then started a little beef babyfood in the same manner about 3 times a day. He survived.

At the vets, they are much more capable of keeping the little one in fluids, so there's a very good chance for her. Do note - you have to clean up your whole house where she's been and anywhere in the yard she's been with bleach to kill the virus or your place will be toxic to any other dog that comes around. Your pup won't get it again, but other dogs can - for a long, long, long time.

Your pup has all my positive energy coming her way. I'm sorry she has to go through this crap.

My wife and I have taken care of many pups as fosters and one batch of seven had parvo. They all lived. It was scary and one was close to death. We were told there was a one in ten chance he would make it when we brought him back from the vet. Around midnight I went out to buy a new heating pad for him. When I came back, he was running around!

And Max, the biggest of the litter, didn't even get sick at all.

Hydration, rest, and luck. Hopefully there's overnight monitoring at the vet.

      Hurray!!

Connie just called me and told me the Animal Hospital just called her and a miracle has occurred!

Lexi is eating, drinking and playing up a storm. I can come and get her. They said they have never seen a puppy recover so quickly from parvo in all the years of their practice!

They are calling her their miracle patient!

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and positive thoughts and well wishes!

After we had put the cameras away, Emmery and Lexi were playing tag. It was so cute! Emmery would start running and Lexi would chase after her. Then she'd turn around and start running and Emmery would chase after her. Emmery's little giggles were priceless!

That is such good news! I am very happy for you, Terra. That first shot probably prevented the parvo from going full steam ahead. Make yourself a giant note for the date of her next shot(s) to get her fully immunized.

What happens now that she has had it? Does she become naturally immune at all?

I'll bet she is going to be so surprised to see you show up and take her back home. Little puppies can be so full of surprise when they are experiencing new things.

            Thanks everyone!

Naturally I'm out of thanks again.

She was so happy to see me, her little feet were prancing up and down as fast as her tail was wagging, lol!

She gave out two little barks and then the cutest beagle howl. Then I got kisses everywhere, haha!

She's eating and drinking just fine and I have three pills to give her, one a day, starting tomorrow. She's a little puffy from having an IV, but that should go down as well.

Right now she's napping in her new carrier/crate on her new puppy bed and has dragged all of her new puppy toys in there too. I have ordered her a new pink metal crate with pink flowers on the side and am expecting that to arrive either tomorrow or Tuesday.( because of the holiday)

            April,

She will never ever get parvo again, now that she has had it. And yes, we sterilized all that we could last night and just tossed some things. I insisted she get new dishes too and she got even cuter ones than she had before.

She has her appointment set for her recheck visit with her vet already. And they will text me reminders when it's time for all of her vaccinations and such.

YAY! I hate to agree with people on the vacs, because I feel that too many people are too dependent and get too many of them -- but when I called the vet when I got Bacci and told them he was exposed and talked with them about it - they suggested I get the vac for him and it might lessen it when it hit. I figured it was a fatal illness so did that. I figured it helped save his life even though I gave him pediolite every 20 minutes for 62 hours before he pulled through.

That and Bacci and Lexi both had one thing in common. They'd just landed in homes where they were loved and cared for and had something worth living for. If anyone thinks that's not a hella bit of health benefit on it's own is just uninformed. Terra - you did as much for her as they did. Sign of a good doggy momma if any I've ever seen.

Aww, cut it out! You're gonna make me tear up, lol!

She is so precious, on and off all evening, she's been coming over, climbing on my lap, into my arms and then nestling her little snout on my neck.

Then she's off to her toys. She's gone and sniffed each and every one. I swear she's counting them to make sure they're all still here. Then she carried them one by one into her crate.

I couldn't help myself, when I went to her vet to get another round of antibiotics for her kennel cough, I picked her up another toy. I placed it on the floor and she saw it immediately. She came over, chewed on it a bit, then promptly carried it into her crate and put it with the others, lol!

I hope she's not being a hoarder, haha!

It's hard to keep a rottie in toys. They go through them really fast. I used to buy basketballs for my rotties and they'd play with them for a little while the they'd pop them. I had to get larger balls that they couldn't get their mouths around to play with. I had to replace a friend's bowling ball when Munchie got to it. Got it by the holes and proceeded to turn it into chunks.

April - my first dog had a toy box and I taught him to clean up his own toys. It's not a hard thing to train other than there's always one or two that they'll stash somewhere else. Not sure why? Maybe they think that they can't play with the ones in the box til you get up again? LOL. Maybe they just like having something secret?

HeySal, your dog destroyed a bowling ball? That's hilarious. I can only buy ours the better rubber toys because she will destroy anything else. Those giant "dynosaur" knobby bones the pet stores that are so expensive, get destroyed fast. Nylabones? No way, she will chew through those and I'm afraid of her swallowing the bits that fall off or ripping her mouth on the sharp pieces.

She likes her toys out during the day and very insistent it is play time if you tell her to get her toys. There is no way she will put them away herself. She will gather up her Milkbones, but those get put away in or buried in my bed, pillows. We have to check for those every night. At least she has never eaten them there, they are always whole. I think they are for us, in case we get hungry at night and want a snack. :-)

I used to buy stuffed toys because Gracie loved them so much - then one day she discovered the stuffing inside and when I got home my house and yard looked like it had snowed!

What she loves most are the rope toys with a ball at the end - she plays with those daily. She runs dragging them, pivots in a circle swinging them - gets the other dogs to join in for a tug of war. Another good toy is the large "horse ball" made for horses to play with (molded handle on a large ball).

Those pups can get territorial with things they "own." I bought a nice-sized plastic box (has an on or off plastic snap lid--that stays off) to keep our pup's toys in the living room. I gather them up at night, they are all over the house, behind the furniture or under it, on the steps, etc. However, she will watch you if you pick up her toys because if you think you are touching them, it automatically means you have to play with them and her. She can really get into that.

I even wrap her Christmas gifts and we all sit down to get them. It's the real highlight of the day for her--like she needs more toys.

The pups are just like little kids. They can't wait to possess what you bought for them. I've already decided that this coming year, I'm wrapping up an oven mitt that will be just hers. She steals my stuff all the time.

Are you and I spoiling our pets? You betcha!

My Husky would tear up stuffed toys in about two minutes. Tennis balls would
meet the same fate after he played fetch and then keep away for about five minutes.
He was not good at sharing toys with other dogs.

Amazing that a dog could destroy a bowling ball.

The bowling balls I think are only possible because of the holes. You get a dog breed that can take a man's leg off at the knee if they want and they can destroy the ball by chipping at the space between the holes once they have a place to grasp with their teeth, they can destroy about anything.

Had another dog that put holes in a door knob trying to open it in a wind storm when I wasn't home - the wind was so strong the cupboards would bang a little bit. I think to him it was like having a ghost in the house. So he let himself out and crushed the knob and put tooth holes through it in the process. I came home and he was sitting in the yard (one thing I love about rotties - they stay home). I couldn't figure out how he got out until we went inside and I saw the door knob. I have a friend who had problems with his going right through his door when there was a bitch in heat around close anywhere.

Then there's that set of snow tires that I tossed into yard meaning to take them into the shed later. OMG.
