Why do people (even animals too) want to live?

If you want to die you'll be classified as mentally ill and suicidal.

So why do people want to live? Why we don't want to die? What
is it about "life" that makes it self-perpetuating?

At the heart of the theory of evolution is "survival of the fittest". But
why do the fittest want to survive?

I was just thinking ...

Aside from any primeval animal instincts we have to survive and reproduce. We are indoctrinated as children into wanting to live. We are mentally and physically stimulated to be interested to continue on in experiencing, learning and enjoying what the world has to offer. It's when we get fed up or disinterested in it all we entertain dying.

My first guess is that living creatures that have a strong survival instinct, are the ones that live the longest and reproduce the most offspring. So the instinct is passed down, getting stronger as it goes...to further perpetuate the the species.

So, it would be a product of evolution. That's my guess, but I don't really know.

I don't really know either, but it sure is interesting to think about.
We are not going to live forever, but we still want to live. We want
a "legacy" that we are not going to be around to enjoy.

Frank, do you think the forum can just auto-append that statement to the end of all of Claude's posts? Possibly for legal reasons.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

I know from personal ex, that heaven is more real than this one, so as such, understand how important it is to stay down here at least til all your contractual lessons are learn't.

Death doesn't worry me at all, what happens being dying does?

Yes, the will to live is the strongest instinct. Those without the will to live died off long ago. The idea of eat and don't be eaten is the most basic of instincts and is shared by virtually every animal.

And the desire to reproduce is considered by some researchers to be the second strongest instinct.

Both do make sense, as they are necessary for the survival of a species.

Well, while you two clowns were making fun of the Forum's most beloved member....

Kurt (My very best friend in all the world) said something intelligent.

Thank you Kurt. It's so rewarding to hear from someone so educated, instead of from the Franks and Riffles.

By the way, Franks and Riffles sounds like a cheap lunch you would get in England.

Just to be clear, as much as you calling me a friend disgusts me, I thanked your post for your "Franks and Riffles" comment.

While I think "Riffles and Franks" sounds better, you're right that Frank would have demanded top billing. And for the first time in recorded history, and likely the last time ever, you were right and I was wrong.
