30(ish) Days Until Microsoft Owns the Internet

Just wanted to remind everyone that the month of June will be the best time to launch a product, send out press releases, send an important newsletter, or do anything that will call attention to your products/services. After that, and maybe a couple of weeks later, Microsoft is going to own the Internet-using public with its Windows 10 release.

I think it's supposed to be released sometime after the 20th. As a result, every Windows user will be talking about it. And every non-Windows user will be poking fun of those who do. Either way, it won't be a good time to seek attention for anything until the furor dies down. And I have no clue when that will happen.

Software developers had better prepare for a LOT of incompatibility issues at the time of the release as well.

It's going to be a mad, mad world.

Ohhh! You mean that it will own the internet because people will be talking about it and likely emphasizing it's early defects like any OS launch has had...

That's hardly owning the internet, much less online discussion about anything lol

As a marketer I must make note of your click-bait thread title though. Duly noted

This is their last one, isn't it? Either way, I don't see things changing that much. Did the internet die when they released Windows 8? lol..

Windows 10 will obviously gain a reasonable amount of press for a little while, but after the hype it will be business as normal.

Don't worry, they will have a public release/demonstration, it will crash, then business as usual

M/S has LITERALLY tried to own the internet for over a decade!!!!! The result? Over the last 4 years, they HAVE made a LOT of progress. It is enough to make one doubt its veracity, and don't forget that M/S has been FORCED to support most of the standards because, if they didn't, they would be relegated to the dustbin, etc.... ALSO, they DID manage to trick a generation of "coders" to support ONLY them, so they have that. STILL, with ALL that going on, they have far LESS than 33%! OH, Netcraft says 33%, but they are counting sites, and many DON'T support and/or WON'T use M/S garbage. So they could easily be switched to APACHE! And they speak of Apache now only having 38%, BUT, you have to add.... Most of the other, and perhaps NGINX, are likely apache as well. One thing is for sure, they are not dumb enough, or large enough to be siding with M/S.

ALSO, if M/S changed the landscape drastically, people could easily switch to apache. M/S ALREADY tried playing every hand to affect the current code base and browsers, and FAILED! They still have their browser ONLY because they capitulated and started supporting all the client STANDARDS! For the codebase, they DID create .NET, but had to allow some opensource to maintain market share, and were forced to abandon JAVA. SOOOO, so far, M/S is losing this battle. Even if they got 70% market share, which at the current, unbelievable, rate COULD be in about 3 years, they would STILL be walking a thin line. If they tried to force their hand, they could EASILY lose it in WEEKS! ALSO, last I knew, they charged a LOT for the back end. If someone took their site full private, they would see that, and possibly change just for that.

As for talk about #10? That starts with the RUMORS! The period you are talking about has effectively come and gone. They are STILL talking about it! But it isn't THAT popular.

      Hi,

5,4,3,2,1...until someone else mentions that weird white nag icon down on the lower right hand side of the screen (notification area of the task bar).

I had to uninstall windows update KB3035583 to get rid of it. Surely everyone sane who has been around a little while on windows knows that the worst thing ever to upgrade to before allowing other beta crash test dummies to do it for you, is windows?

Update: Microsoft quietly seeds consumer PCs with Windows 10 upgrade 'nag' campaign | Computerworld

(Edited later to add - sorry, that sentence above is a good example of total gobbledygook. As it has been quoted below I won't bother editing it...)

I'll tell you a few nasty little secrets about the enterprise version, and IT!

        1. Corporations are NOT that stupid, and are cynical! They are SLOW to upgrade. Some will NEVER upgrade to a full version, and some won't even upgrade to any even revision! A number of my customers only RECENTLY upgraded to V7! HECK, on the last customer I was at,VERY RECENTLY, my laptop(that THEY gave me) was the LAST to be "upgraded" to V7! OK, OK, you say, BIG DEAL! SO WHAT!? You ready for the punch line?

        ARE YOU READY......

        FOR THE PUNCH LINE?

        READY?

It had a windows 7 sticker on it! YEP! They BOUGHT it with V7 on it, because it just CAME that way, and "DOWN GRADED" it to XP! WHY? Because it wasn't tested yet and, thus, the software they had was still made for XP! Where I am right now, they are only up to 7SP1.

        2. They often lock up the networks, so frivolous updates won't work!
        3. THEY want to push updates, AFTER they are tested!

So windows ads would be merely annoying people ANYWAY, assuming they even got it to work.

As for the "Microsoft was typically terse in the accompanying documentation for KB3035583, saying only that it introduced "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available to the user.""? That goes BEYOND terse! It is intentionally misleading! BESIDES, the correct term wouldn't be update anyway, but upGRADE! The difference being that it is potentially invasive and a different version, as opposed to some patch. This is apple centric, but check it out, nearly all agree! https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201564

You must be pushing Windows 8? Or kittens on the black market?

Yes, good line to get the click, but the rest is a bit of a crock!

Doesn't make a rats a*** of a difference on Graphicriver, so l will look into it, and see if it has any bugs, but beyond that nada!

A bit like saying a race that stops a nation, crap, there are only about 200k in Au that bother watching or betting on that race.

Probably because the odd's on the favorites are so short, you would have to be rich to get anything worthwile back.

        Hi,

Loving the simplicity and familiarity of Windows 7 here in retro-luddite-land on one of my desktop computers.

Along with my old-fashioned mobile phone (just for texting and one-toning, no internet) I'm inhabiting a smartphone/tablet/i-something free zone.

Most of my friends keep complaining that their XYZ gadget is low on power because they've been using it for 5 minutes....I don't understand why they put up with that nonsense.

I just got my first smart phone in April. At first I installed a bunch of (useless) apps and was having the battery drain problem. I did a factory reset a couple of weeks ago to solve the problem. My primary use for the smart phone is still using it as a phone. When I'm out and about I'll use it for a radio (I don't have a radio in my car or on my bike) and for the GPS, that's if I even bring the phone with me.
One thing I really like about the smart phone is the way it makes texting easier.
Computer wise I use Linux Mint because it's easy to use and doesn't have any of the issues associated with Windows.

Well, who can resist throwing weird looking birds at terribly constructed buildings made of wood?

I had a look at the iphone today that resembles a Galaxy smart phone. It looked like a poor mans version of the Samsung one!

I have a Smart Phone, with radio, player, etc even internet, but after clocking up $10 for 5 minutes of fiddling l quickly avoided that like the plague.

But my phone is small, and can easily be pocked, as well as a small screen, which means no real battery issues.

I would only get one, if l was doing app's, (which l am not).

Having to walk around with this stupid thing in my hand, is asking for a drop and broken screen, etc.
