Ok, this is starting to get a little weird.

I wonder when they will get ALL four legs to work, and how long it will get to have 2 legs. I remeber when they had this and it seemed like a jok, since it had to be held up, and now they DO have something workable, at least for a flat surface and no side pressure. If it were chasing after me, for example, I may put little tiny obstacles in its path to take advantage of its steady bilaterally simultaneous strides. I also may try to sideswipe it to knock it over. A REAL cheetah could EASILY compensate or recover, but this doesn't seem to have that ability.

Steve, it is still early in the game. Have patience, there will come a day when these robots are not only realistic looking, but have greater abilities than real cheetahs.

OH,I KNOW! The first computer I wanted to get cost about $300, had less than 4K, IIRC, was less than 1MIP, had a hexideximal display and keypad! NO DISK SPACE! The last computer I GOT cost less than $500, had 6GB, is MANY MIPS, had a DECIMAL keypad, a full keyboard, and 1TB DISK SPACE. STILL, it HAS been 45 years! And WHY is DARPA financing this? There is SUCH a little return, and so far, they really haven't done anything new. HECK, it REALLY has like TWO legs, though they are each like saw horses.

STILL, in honor of MIT, HERE is a nice commencement speech!!!!!!!

Maybe one day we will have artificial Jurassic Park?

I expect to see a field of these things in Disneyland, futureworld before the year 2030!

Damn, thing looks alive, seriously weird.

I bet the enemy would love to get their hands on one of those, probably 100k, of hardware on legs?

            These things are weird.

I just imagined a Harrison Ford type doing something humorously Hans Solo-ish or Indiana Jones-ish to a robot because the programmer jokingly gave it an annoying "personality", or something like that.

Yes, if one of these things gets on two legs and tap-dances l would shoot it!

Boston Dynamics already did that 5 years ago.

I never said it wasn't possible, though I certainly wasn't thinking about these two when I said that. STILL, THESE(the big dog, and mule) are more impressive, and more usable. They almost certainly had avoid logic as well, so on a race through terrain with the cheetah, they would win. Going fast is EASY! It is compensating for even normal natural stuff that is hard. And in a military situation, people add all they can to the normal natural stuff. If they see YOU as a definite threat, they will even aim it directly at YOU! Supply lines, and transportation help, in a war, is seen as a threat just as big as a sniper trying to kill your friends.

The problem with the big dog & mule is anyone could here them coming a mile away considering one sounds like a chainsaw & the other sounds like a lawnmower. Not exactly stealth mode.

Don't worry they could do an all electric one, and use a mini nuclear generator if pressed.

About the size of a can of coke and would last 10 years, (Curiosity has one).

I'm sure the world doesn't need enemies capturing helpless bots containing small nukes.

YEAH! AND a lot of people make a big deal about atomic sources being used for HIGH POWER! THEY AREN'T!!!!!! They are used for LENGTH OF SERVICE and INDEPENDENCE! And THAT is JUST what a satellite needs! It is no good for a packmule. For such a device, it may have to be the size of SEVERAL coke cans, and that is for the DRIVING FORCE! On top of THAT, you would need a generator, since a thermoelectric device may STILL not be efficient enough. OH, it is GREAT for a low power satellite, but maybe not for a high power mule.

In any event, there is too much that can go wrong, and it WOULD violate a lot of safety measures. Just look at the powerplanets they have for cities. HUGE thermopiles, HUGE GENERATORS, SHEILDING, and lots of people watching them! Even some SMALL study reactors are pretty large. One college in California had problems with residual radiation and all from a small one THEY had. I got the idea that IT was probably about as big, or bigger, than one of those robots!

BTW a lot of people complain about the DEPLETED URANIUM BULLETS! Here is just ONE story on THAT: US fired depleted uranium at civilian areas in 2003 Iraq war, report finds | World news | The Guardian

There are over 900,000 in Google alone!

YEAH! I WAS hoping I was hearing things. Most gross movement motors are pretty quiet, and computers today are quiet. You have to wonder what was making the noise!

  • I think the road to develop a better mechanism requires a fuller understanding of all the features that make up a biological body. Not that there are any unknowns, but they will require a sort of "simplification to the root" a grasp of the Mechanical principle. Unless we understand anatomy enough to derive a simple truth we won't make much progress in the sense of antopomorphic devices.

  • Soon.... very, VERY soon...

I dislike seeign it accompained by militaria. A month or so ago there was the news with that "drone" which achieved midflight fueling. This is older, ok, but I can imagine it being filled with plenty of barrels, and things one shouldn't want to use. It can be implemented in cities, where it will hound reletnelessly.

I think the whole point of military kind of faded when countries developed A-bombs etc. What's the point to keep the arms race? X weapon will kill you instantly, but Y weapon will do so and further tear you in half. What's the point? Both fulfill the goal.
