How are we different at 60?
I know that many of us are between 50 and 60 years old.
At sixty, I have noticed changes in my attitude, and my interests. I'm being serious.
For example;
I care less about my business. I'm less engaged. I give almost no effort to making sales, even very profitable ones. I simply care less than even a few years ago.
I have a new book that is 90% done. I could finish it in a solid day of effort. But I keep putting it off. The work is easy, but I'm less interested in the work, and the resulting income.
I'm forgetting how to spell words that I have known how to spell, my entire adult life.
my handwriting is becoming illegible, even to me. (although that may simply be mild arthritis).
But all is not bad.
I love my wife more than ever. And she grows more beautiful to me.
I think about her more, and myself less.
In my store, it's nearly impossible to anger me. Not because I'm so mild mannered, but because I care less what customers are thinking and saying.
I watch less cable TV, especially the news channels. I used to watch, so I could study what they were saying, and how they were coloring the meaning for effect....but I'm caring about that less.
I used to go to high end marketing seminars, and haven't for a couple of years, because I no longer care. I'm selling (on E-Bay) most of my information products...because I know I'll never use them again. I'm keeping my extensive book library, but mostly out of nostalgia.
I used to read comic books regularly. Now, I'm too near sighted to read them. Glasses are in my near future.
We'll likely buy another car. But I can see us never buying another one after that.
List of thing I absolutely know, I'll never do again;
Go swimming.
Dance.
Run. (unless my life is in danger, and then, maybe not)
Say or do something to impress another person.
Have sex.
Get married again.
Sky dive, rock climb, or anything that involves risk, for the sake of fun.
Sell in a customer's home (What I did for about 40 years)
Drink alcohol
Travel across country to give a paid speech.
Threaten anyone
Go to anyone's funeral.
Have a funeral
Go to a church
Visit a relative, just because they are related
Be frightened by scary movies, or even the prospect of my own dying. That's actually quite liberating.
These aren't stands that I've taken, just things I know I won't do again.
So.....how has your life changed with age? How are you different than you were even ten years ago? Do you think your changes are natural with age, or did you have a revelation of sorts?
