Overweight parents. Overweight children. Genetics right? Probably not.

It easy to assume that overweight people would be genetically predisposed to have overweight children.

Let me suggest that overweight parents are more likely to pass on their overeating behavior to their children.

Have you noticed that overweight people tend to have overweight pets?

"...the folly of learned helplessness through genetic determinism."

I lost 38 pounds (17kg) in 8 months by exercising more. I didn't have to take any pills that altered my brain's chemistry unnaturally. I also became stronger, more fit, increased my endurance, reduced joint pain, and enjoy other LASTING benefits from it that you can't get from a little pill.

According to the Mayo Clinic and Web MD:

      1. Exercise controls weight
      2. Exercise combats health conditions and diseases
      3. Exercise improves mood
      4. Exercise boosts energy
      5. Exercise promotes better sleep
      6. Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life
      7. Exercise can be fun
      8. Exercise improves blood circulation
      9. Exercise improves your complexion
      10. Exercise reduces stress
      11. Exercise increases bone mass
      12. Exercise reduces symptoms of depression
      13. Exercise improves the neurotransmitter capabilities of your brain
      14. Exercise improves your immune system
      15. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, enabling you to think more quickly

...just to name a few of the benefits.

The bonus benefit of exercise: the stronger your muscles, the more calories you burn even when you're not exercising. That's one of the primary reasons men are usually able to lose weight faster than women.

In short, for most people, exercising is a healthier lifestyle than altering your weight through chemistry. If you still think you need an appetite suppresant, just drink a big glass of water before eating. Besides...
Clinical studies have shown that 37% of people mistake hunger for thirst because the thirst mechanism is so weak. By doing so, the body is led to think that it needs food when what it’s really asking for is water. Moreover, the fact that the symptoms of dehydration mimic those of hunger contribute to people’s confusion between the two signals.
The next time you're tempted to ingest - and recommend - diet supplements, you might want to consider developing a healthier lifestyle so that you dont need them. Just a little (non-caloric) food for thought...

I can attest to the benefits of exercise. In my 30's, I decided to get fit, and worked out every day at the gym, for two years. And I went from a balding, egocentric, unloved, smelly, arrogant, dismissive, unathletic, slow moving fat man...who couldn't get laid if his life depended on it.....

...to a a balding, egocentric, unloved, smelly, arrogant, dismissive, unathletic, slow moving fat man...with slightly bigger muscles...who couldn't get laid if his life depended on it.....

Dennis; Extremely useful post, especially about mistaking thirst for hunger. I just had to go for the joke.

Yes, and your overbearing, stray cat that demands food on tap, or gleering looks!

But, yes, doctors always say it is genetics, eventhough it usually takes several generations to create a recurring pattern, and cannot account for all negative patterns?

          Nothing new then!

I've lost 35 pounds since April 7th and I haven't exercised at all (other than walking the dogs).

How'd I do it? I stopped drinking calories. Other than one night a month when I allow myself as much hooch as I want, I drink nothing but water and unsweetened tea.

I also maintain a daily average calorie count of 1500 calories (Monday through Friday), but allow 2000-2500 on the weekend. I exclude no food. I just adjust my remaining calorie expenditure to allow whatever I want.

If I want pizza for lunch, it means salad for dinner. Birthday cake at work? Sliced peppers for an evening snack.

Basically, it took my quickly-approaching 40th birthday for me to accept my impending doom. I'm finally ready to admit that I'm not indestructible.

As Tim McGraw once wisely said:

Oh my next thirty years, I’m gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe I’ll remember my next thirty years

Hmmmm - methinks I am going to need to reevaluate your firmly-entrenched status as resident moron-in-chief. That's sad seeing how long it took you to wrestle it away from Claude. Wouldn't it be easier if you guys just passed the title back and forth on the first and third Sunday of the month.

You have inspired me to follow your lead, but please be sure that your Depends are securely tightened. Monday morning, I shall begin.

Keep up the good work, Dan. That's really great, although your family musrt be terribly disappointed.

      Yes - I giveth and I taketh away. :-)

My theory is that a good percentage of overweight people eat all the wrong things most of the time. I've watched people unload carts filled full of soda, cakes, donuts and tons of munchies. Finally figured out why there were no veggies or fixings to cook from scratch for good meals. After you pay for all the junk and delicious trash non-foods, there isn't enough money left over for the real stuff.

Good accomplishment, Dennis. All I want to do is lose 8-10, and it's not easy at all once you are a grown-up :-) and I don't eat much delicious trash non-food at all. It just isn't fair.

Use the freezer, Frank, use the freezer! Then, when you get enough properly frozen, you could take a whole week or two off and not have to cook.

Unless I'm making a couple burgers or some eggs, I always seem to manage to cook more than I need, too. Home cooked food is usually always pretty darn good stuff! You'd be a great catch for a wife that didn't like to cook. :-)

The first woman that I spent 12 years with, couldn't make a cup of tea. The second that I spent 10 years with, was too lazy to cook.

Neither of them have ever had it so good, since - and they both acknowledge it. :-)
