Saw this on news tonight - he did an excellent job of handling the situation and so did the backup folks on the jetskis. Lucky guy!

Mick is one of our local surfers here on the Gold Coast, Australia and is one of the best surfers Australia has produced. Unfortunately his mother was watching the contest live on TV at the time it happened and like everyone else feared the worst but thank goodness Mick survived. Local TV here has interviewed Mick's mother with Mick phoning her shortly after safely reaching the beach.

The news is saying he was so shook up that he may even consider hanging up his board permanently. Understandable in the circumstances.

I liked the "solution" reached by two surfers who were competing for first place at the time....they decided to SHARE first place rather than go back in the water.

Mick is an amazing athlete. I have seen him train and is 100% hardcore... it would be a shame to see him change careers - but totally understandable... once bitten twice shy!
