Take anything Glenn Beck says with a grain of salt. He's an entertainer.

If the government wanted to get in your computer, you wouldn't have to go to cars.gov for them to do it.

This is nothing new. It's just a case of technology moving faster than federal computer crime law: to make the website work, they had to construct a network topology which technically made any web client the temporary property of the federal government. Changing the law would take effectively forever, so they added a disclaimer. They don't have any special ability to do any of those things... but they have the right, so they have to tell you.

I'm just speculating, since I've been out of the federal sector for over a decade, but I'd bet it's because of their database connection.

LOL, I guess you never heard of a little organization called the NSA? How about a little diddy from our friends at the FBI called Carnivore, which in PR campaign changed to DCS1000, which then got dumped in lieu of commercial software called NarusInsight. From Wikipedia:

It is notable for being the creator of NarusInsight, a supercomputer system which is used by the NSA and other bodies to perform mass surveillance and monitoring of citizens' and corporations' Internet communications in real-time

I suggest you re-think your statement and tread carefully at any .gov site. Hell, NaurusInsight got installed onto AT&T's internet backbone. So, you probably don't even have to go to a .gov to have your info intercepted by our powers that be.

Please, NarusInsight is a suite of software sold by Narus. It is NOT a supercomputer system, it is simply a 10G ready probe/hardware, that works off the spam port and is able to do DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) on the packets traversing the network.

Narus originally and still today uses the system and sells it for detecting VoIP traffic on Service Providers networks for purposes of grey traffic market and revenue leakage.

It also as an LI (lawful intercept) probe which is able to do traffic reconstruction. This is NOTHING new. SS7 and other companies have been providing LI equipment for both IP and non-IP based systems for years. Traffic reconstruction and hand-over (as it is called in the lingo) for a user under observation is long the norm.

There are many other companies that now can provide traffic reconstruction, and LI intercepts and correlate the data from multiple paths.

Its just that ever since Narus' box was discovered on the ATT link in San Fran, they've become notorious.

Have been associated with Narus and others like Arbor Networks/Ellacoya, etc. this is why I can tell you this with confidence.

The NSA's digital eavesdropping is an issue between the three branches of the Government in the US. Eavesdropping is nothing new. It the issue American have with respect to their constitution/law and the blatant violation that such government agencies like NSA and is cousins at the NRO office do very routinely.

Go read up on Project Echelon

Let's say it is for dealers only.

Does this make it ok that their personal or business documents unrelated to this program should be snooped on by the government?

Does it make it ok that all their personal or business documents become OWNED by the government?

I'm going to put that TOS on my websites and make a fortune with email marketing.

              Dear Firstname Fix

You recently visited my website (mywebsitename.com) and agreed that your computer files belong to me.

Please send them by Fedex Overnight service before 7th August 2009.

Failure to comply will result in legal proceedings.

If you don't want to send me your files, just send me $47 by Paypal instead and ignore this email.

You are wrong. Not every visitor to the site is a dealer. Those terms only apply to dealers.

I was referring to what was stated in the TOS.

Its the TOS that is of concern, I don't care who it applies to.

Oh so if it just applies to dealers its ok with you?

And how does this make Beck the idiot?

I don't know what glen beck said about this, but I am sure they are just trying to get across the idea that they will do ANYTHING to avoid your defrauding the system.

Of course, I don't put anything past the government.

If you want to keep some private information "private... get yourself a standalone PC/laptop (that's not connected to the internet) because yes.. your computer is "there for everyone" unless you're using a firewall. And I don't mean a firewall that you can download for free online... I'm talking a PIX, Checkpoint, or some other corporate firewall software, which MOST home users don't use.

Get yourself an offline computer. I keep all of my financial info on my offline PC.

Excellent advice. A good firewall or HIPS program will make it next to impossible for someone not on your "whitelist" to access your files.

You folks are missing something perhaps even more important: as usual, the federal government couldn't even handle this small program without having major issues. But don't worry, they can handle the entire health care system.

Perhaps they should learn how to run a restaurant first.
