What are the sources of CO2?

Newmark: It's coming from a variety of sources including burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, and from agriculture. But people don't focus on agriculture. They say that we need to switch to wind and solar energy. And, of course, we should transition from a fossil fuel-based energy system to clean energy. But we fail to confront the reality that it is the agricultural malpractice of current farming and ranching systems that contribute to more than half of human-caused CO2 emissions. Food and textile production are contributing billions of tons of CO2 each year.
The worst part of the challenge is that if we were to stop all CO2 emissions into the atmosphere--not one new molecule--that won't do anything to abate the climate crisis. We are already over 400 ppm and we need to get back to 350 ppm. Ideally we would like to get back to the pre-industrial era levels of 275 ppm.

    I realize that the thrust of the discussion is how we farm and otherwise tend to plant life, but if one is willing to step back a bit, the sentence, "Food and textile production are contributing billions of tons of CO2 each year.", shows that there are simply too many of us, in relation to the planet's fixed resources. Here's a real simple comic that shows where things stand today, and of course, our population's still growing:

      Actually the thrust of the discussion was about how important healthy soils are to our environment and in combating the effects of man on climate change. People here and around the country seem to think that getting off fossil fuels is the answer when asked what can we do to stop climate change. While that will slow down our contributions, it won't solve the problem or will it clean up what is already out there effecting our climate.
      As for your point of there being to many of us based on the amount of CO2 created from food and textile production, that's not really true. It's the way that food is produced and what is used for textiles and how they are produced that is the problem.

        But the reality is, climate change is a hoax, perpetrated by every climatologist on the planet....and anyone keeping records......and the instruments themselves......and the weather people.....and all governments on Earth.....

          No one's saying climate change is a hoax Claude. What is a hoax is blaming it all on fossil fuels and thinking that if we cross over to alternative energy sources it will end.
          As for food and textile production, there are safe non threatening ways to produce both that would not only be sustainable but also would have a positive effect on the climate.
          The methods we now use to produce our foods and textiles will not only turn the land into desserts and dust bowls but they also are incapable of handling the droughts they are in no small part responsible for.           One of the side benefits of what is going on there is the carbon retention of the soil (Soil Carbon Sequestration)is greatly increased which has a positive effect on man's contribution to climate change.

              My problem is with climate change being a very serious subject to me. So I'm usually inclined to reply with a short lecture rather then another joke

                  Same here at one time. Like I said being serious all the time on any subject really isn't my nature. Maybe it's part of my aging process or the result of smoking so much cannabis all the time. Funny thing is I use to feel sorry for the type of people I'm turning into

          That's just plain silly. Think of all the parking tickets, IRS delinquency notifications, jury duty letters and AARP membership invitations that could be put to good use instead of simply being ignored. Additionally, if you are lucky, you might have an energetic and persistent band of Jehovah's Witnesses leaving butt-wipe wedged in your screen door on a continuous basis.

              Long ago, I read an article by a scientist who pointed out that it usually takes about two percent of people (maybe he was talking about people with brains like his) to be active in solving the world's problems. He gave several examples, the only one I can remember right now are the black clouds in England from when they burned coal for heat and cooking. Hopefully this applies to climate change-I think some man and some nature's cycles. And, I think it is entirely possible to have something as major, and as beyond our control, as a major ice age again.

                Ah, that takes me back to the early sixties, burning coal in the fireplaces in two rooms in our house in the UK. Outside, the smell and smokey atmosphere from all the other houses doing it. Before we stopped using coal fires we had gone to smokeless coal for a while. Gas Central Heating was a real luxury when we got it as it heated all rooms.

                Hey, that sickness was legit. It's referred to as "The Great Colorado Flu" in my house. I now have a negative association with Colorado because of it.

                My wife thought I was playing it up until she caught it after we got home. I still give her a hard time for not believing me.

      Thanks, but this seems to be slightly misleading. The same amount of CO2 is going to appear "better" when it is divided by more dollars, so all this does is imply that the more affluent states are "cleaner"/greener. If you took out the division, I'd bet that the carbon would be strongest over higher-populated areas.
