Are We Allowed to Have Multiple WF Accounts?

I was just curious since this isn't specifically stated in the rules- if someone gets banned, are they allowed to just start another account and keep posting away? For that matter, is it also LEGAL to have multiple accounts to bump/promote your own/your friends posts?

I'm asking because it seems like the people who keep bumping posts from 2010-2012 all have less than 5-10 total posts, so it's pretty obvious they're probably doing it from an alt account.

These same people have also been posting something like, "Have you checked out this course lately? It's unbelievable!" And then less than 1 minute later, someone with three total posts replies, "OMG yes....it is amazing! I learned so much from it! <Noob Name> author is a genius in IM!" Now, the mods do seem to delete these threads pretty quick.....but for some reason they just keep coming.

In any case, it's extremely annoying and it would be nice to see it stop. My question is, should we be reporting those types of instances when it's pretty obvious one person is having conversations with himself across multiple accounts?

Multiple accounts were not allowed in the past, and I'd assume they're not allowed now.

As to reporting - you should report them and anything you find suspicious. Just explain in the report why you think the post is a problem and let the mods take it from there.

Pretty sure multiple accounts will result in a permaban. It's pretty easy to spot when people with no posts are all raving about the same product.

It's stated in the Terms of Use that multiple accounts aren't allowed in the Forum. Here's an excerpt under the User Representations section.

Warrior Forum reserves the right to refuse the Warrior Forum Service, or any part of the service, to any user for any reason. You may not create multiple usernames and accounts for the purpose of committing fraud, making misrepresentations, or to make posts by multiple usernames within the same forum thread.

Yes. We highly encourage that you report them. You can also check if both accounts have matching IP addresses (highly possible if they are from the same location).

I'm a bit confused by this statement. None of us have access to their IP addresses - only you, the official mods, can check IP addresses, so I'm not sure why you're saying "you can check..."

        You have if they're online.
There is a button at the top "quicklinks"
        Then "whosonline"
You have to wait until someone is online to check though.

Thanks for the response Famekin...I feel honored to be a part of squeezing out one of your eight lifetime posts! =)

Unfortunately though, that doesn't really answer my question completely. Let's say someone has two accounts but they DON'T commit fraud, they DON'T misrepresent themselves and they DON'T post in the same thread as their alt. Is it legal then?

To make a long story short, someone sent me an unsolicited sales pitch by PM...and a different account sent me the exact same message a few weeks earlier. This has happened 4 or 5 times over the past few months. I reported it two times ago and I was a little surprised when the message came again by someone else. I also looked back at the first guy who messaged me and he's still here inactive....although he did spend several days straight in the PM section right after he messaged me. From what I could see, the account was online almost 72 hours straight....all in PM's.

So back to the original question- are multiple accounts 100% illegal...or are they only illegal when they cross any of the above thresholds?

The message was about being a forum moderator on a competing IM site and I'm guessing they're spamming it to the masses daily...but obviously I don't have any proof.

Been there done that, but under the old forum management. Wasn't a big deal but then we where both already pretty well known on the forum.

I fully agree; this would be incredibly helpful when sniffing out fraud.

I'd asked about this problem years ago. The answer seems to be that IP's are only visible to War Room members. Frankly, I'm not going to pay this site even more money to help them police it. (Yes, I was one of those people who actually had to pay to join WF, back when a nominal fee was being used to help block the vast majority of the spam, multiple accounts, etc.) I just added a request for this ability in the Suggestion subforum, although I somewhat doubt that anyone will notice.

Or they paid some individuals on fiverr, to set up an account and crap on?

This thread IS in the OT.

The problem is that some people think that any thread here is open for fat, racist, sex, nasty or whatever jokes they want to tell.

There is nowhere on this forum where someone can ask a serious question that doesn't fit elsewhere except here and almost every time it turns into something totally different than what the OP intended.

I have seen many instances where individuals requested that there were in need of serious responses and the thread was treated accordingly. It has happened to me, more than once.

Additionally, I have never seen an individual complain about the way their post was treated, that you seem so willing to complain about for them.

Lastly, as you so clearly and quickly jumped down my throat to illustrate, this IS the OT and in reality one should not make posts that demand serious responses. It's unfortunate that there may not be a place here where you can posts serious questions that don't pertain to IM, but this ain't 'Dear Abby.' If you have serious issues to discuss, there are thousands of places on the web where you can post them. Do you think that folks here are the best people to help you with your issue - animal, vegetable or mineral. I doubt it.

in that to some of us even in the OT this kind of thing is getting ludicrous because of the sheer volume and not just by the poster you were talking about.

I see all of your points, Mark and won't argue with any of them. While I have seen people complain that their posts have gone off-topic, I don't recall any of them being of a very serious nature, although I may not be fully aware of how serious they might have been to the OP. I think that because it is the OT, people feel a certain freedom that is debatable as to how far it should be stretched.

Personally, although I'm a total ass-clown, I would not intentionally hijack a serious thread for the sake of getting a laugh. I believe that for the most part we all do a fairly good job of regulating our behavior and calling others out when they step over a perceived line. There is no perfect world, or forum.

True. And most of us here, including Claude, if I can presume to speak for others, agree wholeheartedly.

The continual fat jokes, however, long ago stopped being funny (I don't think they ever were, actually...) and are really just kind of pathetic.

I believe Claude tolerates them because he is a good sport. But what people really enjoy are actual clever putdowns, puns and burns. Fat jokes would only qualify if they were one of those.

Which yours, to the extent I have seen them, are not.

                              Just stop now, please.
I believe that we are allowed to have multiple WF accounts, as long as you are smart about it and don't make it too obvious. Nobody is trying to hunt down duplicates.

Wouldn't you agree with this on-topic post, Jack Gordon?

That's not really the intent of "off topic." Off topic is for topics that don't fit anywhere else, not that a topic can't be serious. At one time hijacking threads was considered bad forum decorum - pardon the rhyme - and it still is frowned upon at many forums.

That's not to say you can't make jokes in serious threads, but a little discrimination often goes a long way toward peaceful co-existence.

The problem is that some people think that any thread here is open for fat, racist, sex, nasty or whatever jokes they want to tell.

There is nowhere on this forum where someone can ask a serious question that doesn't fit elsewhere except here and almost every time it turns into something totally different than what the OP intended.

Typically questions get answered and then the thread turns silly. For example, this one. The question was definitively answered in post 4. Maybe threads should just be locked when answered.

Freelancer removed the IP address when they took over. I think everyone should be able to see them to help prevent fraud.

No. It's like Dennis said; we used to be able to see IP addresses (in the manner described by Les) but that facility was removed sometime last year. Now it's just the mods who see that info, as far as I know.

Kay, if you can see the IP addresses, it would seem you've been given special treatment.

Meanwhile, the OP's question still hasn't been answered...but at least we have a 15 round slug-fest to keep us occupied while we wait.

By the way, I have Mark leading on my scorecard 6 rounds to 5.

Yup, and then I explained in #25 that he did not fully answer that question. All he said was that multiple accounts were illegal if they're used for one of three criteria...which would lead us to believe that having multiple accounts is in fact okay otherwise.

I was just trying to get a clarification amidst the arguments...ironically about whether or not the arguments were preventing me from getting an answer here. Well, it's pretty safe to say at this point that it is.

You are saying the moderator who posted above is wrong?

We have the old hillybilly and sock puppet terra - and everyone knows those accts are harmless. Common sense goes a long way.

The continual fat jokes, however, long ago stopped being funny (I don't think they ever were, actually...) and are really just kind of pathetic.
It was funny when it was a couple friends poking at each other - but not when so many others decide to start playing on the same joke.

One account per person. If we find 2 accounts from the same person we'll issue a lifetime ban to both.
