    Fascinating Captain.

Having spent several years as a Veggie I was always looking for a good meat substitute, flavoured soy and peanut based stuff never really cut it. Let's hope this does.

    Thanks for posting.

Well, the blood is obviously PART of the difference, but not NEARLY as big as they claim. I have had some NICE veggie burgers that had NO blood component. And chicken DOES have a meaty taste even if the blood is not so prominent, etc... And there are some things that have a REAL prominent blood component, and DON'T taste so good.

FURTHER, the quality of soil is dropping a LOT, and beef is a MINOR part of this. So the world won't change in the vastly noticeable way they want. As for unsustainable? Well, it has only been done this way for what, maybe 10 millenia or so? So YEAH, only about 3650000 days! So WHY unsustainable NOW? Well, probably due to a larger population and destruction of forests. But the creation of vegetarian dishes will NOT help that! AND, ironically, this means LESS green area and more cleared land. So EVEN if they achieved the sales/acceptance success they imagine in their wildest dreams, they will FAIL to achieve the usage demographics they want to achieve.

Thanks, Kurt. This is really interesting.

I will never completely quit eating meat because meat consumption is necessary for keeping weight on, there's elements in meat that are hard to get if not impossible from other sources, too. However..............everyone has to cut to a minimal amount of meat consumption to bring animal farming back to sustainable, not torturous methods.

I think this company has the right idea - you don't get the population to change for the good of humanity. If we could do that, we'd not be dangerously over-populated with people continuing to breed at + replacement levels. You need to satisfy their self interest and make that food taste like meat for an affordable price.

I agree. The science is part of it, but marketing is even more important. It has to taste good and be priced competitively. I want to save the world and love animals as much as anyone, but I also love cheeseburgers.

All comes down to what they mean by "refining". If they are modifying at the molecular level and not using just naturally (and healthy) occurring items there could be an "oops" moment down the road when a study finds out their "refining" had health consequences.

  • Same company is marketing a vegetarian fish that leaves all your pans stinky and chicken burgers you have to pluck.

Worse still, their luxury caviar costs more than your house.
