Honey's Cone of Sadness

Greetings All,

My little Honey is home from the hospital after having a tumor removed from her leg. It has been sent out for a biopsy and all of us here are praying that it is benign. Any of you folks that believe in prayer - yours would be appreciated, also.

After awakening from the anesthesia she went right for the sutures, so we had to place her in a cone. She is not happy, at all - and has 8 more days of this ahead of her.

Also had her teeth cleaned while she was under. French-kissing her was starting to become a challenge.

I am so worried about my beautiful girl that I don't know what to do. :-(

    • Sorry to hear, Frank, and I will pray for her. We went through quite a lot of those collars with the last pup we had. They really aren't happy wearing it, but it sure is better than letting the pup rip out the stitches.

    Mine was just diagnosed with lymphoma last week. He is only 4 (an estimate, not a lot of good data came from the shelter when we got him 3 years ago).

    Chemo started Tuesday. It is heartbreaking. Best case, they are telling us, is that with chemo he will feel happy and healthy for around a year while it is pushed into remission. But when it comes back, there won't be much in the way of good options.

    We are coming to grips with the reality we are facing now. I truly hope your news is better.

    • Went through that about five years ago with stomach cancer. Our vet was able to make ol' Jackie new again for about a year and half and then - poof - he was gone. Still tears me up. That said, Jack was a 9 year old boxer. They don't typically get much older than that. Yours may fair better being younger.

    Claude wears a cone like that when he goes out to eat at restaurants. It helps protect other people.

    • Update, he no longer uses the cone. His wife got him an extra wide feeding tube.

  • A friend of mine just lost his 10 year old dog. He said that he had spent more time with her than any humans.

    I hope that the biopsies don't take too long because the waiting is torture. I wish the best for you and Honey.

      I simply can't handle hearing this. This is precisely why I can't believe in God. No merciful God would ever allow something like this to happen. While that may be a simplistic view, some things are that simple to ascertain.
      Horrible. My vet has already alerted me to the possibility. I don't pray, but my thoughts are with you and yours.

      Man, what the hell have I started. I apologize for bringing back so many painful memories, to others. I had no idea. :-(

      Claude is not allowed to eat in restaurants. There are health codes that keep him out.
      Lost my first girl after 12 years. We were together everyday during that time and we rarely encountered other humans. She was laid to rest in the backyard and I visit with her every day, without fail. That girl kept me going through some very difficult times. It was is she could read my mind and knew when I needed comforting.





      She is buried under a tree, next to the lake. It was her favorite spot to lay and watch the world float by.

      I know - I'm a sentimental, old fool. lol
      Torture is the understatement of the year. :-(

      Another 2 weeks, or so.

  • Hang in there Frank. The big lesson here is to enjoy every day as if it is all we get. You never know what tomorrow holds.

    Blue Bear (mine) had it pretty good before, but now has never had as many hugs, steak bones and belly rubs as he has gotten in the last week from everyone in the family. Whatever time we do have left is with a heightened sense of love and purpose.

      That's how I approach every aspect of every day. I'm old. lol
      I can't do any more for her than I have since the day I rescued her. She is the most important thing in my life and is treated as such, every minute of everyday. I never worry about looking back someday and saying to myself, "I wish I would have . . . . . . . such and such." That's never going to happen. :-)

    I know how you feel about natural medicines - but they saved my boy. If it comes to the vet saying "time for her to go" -- remember - I have the whole system I used to save Ricky online. Do not give her up without a fight.

  • Hope it's benign, if not, I wish the best and least invasive for you and Honey.
    I did 4 years of palliative care with one of my Huskies.
    (He had a nose tumor and made it to 12 years..)

      It's perfectly fine for you to admit to being a wimp, but don't refute my well-known and continuously displayed status as an exceptional hard-ass. :-)
      Honestly, I don't think they make anything that I don't already own. lol
      I have given this a lot of thought and probably will go the more painful, but less selfish route and put her down early, if she is going to be in any distress at all. Out of fear at being alone I probably waited too long to put Baby down. I feel very guilty about that, to this day.

      Of course, I appreciate the offer and your concern.
      So happy that worked out. Twelve years is great.

    I'm hoping that it is a benign tumor and all this talk about putting her down is premature. I really can't bear to think of it Frank.

  • I held on to my first cat too long. My brother held on to his first dog too long. People do it.
    I deeply regret it now, even though the cat still purred to his last day and was way under
    weight from his kidneys going at age 21 or so.

    If it's time it's time and it seems so peaceful when the vets do it. At least for the two times I've had to
    go that route.

    I had a spleen removed from a dog. It turned out to be cancerous. They say there is a 50/50
    chance they can live comfortably for a couple of years after that surgery, or they can go quickly.
    She went quickly and horribly two days after the surgery. I won't do a surgery like that again with a pet. You can't tell them they just had major surgery and need to rest and only eat a little... And,
    I might have had a better outcome if I could have afforded 24/7 care at a vet hospital for a week or so.

    If Honey's is cancerous and has not metastasized and all other factors indicate it might be positive, I would consider removing the leg as dogs do seem to adjust to that. Of course, we each react to things like this in our own ways and you know your dog, yourself and the facts.

    I do wish the best and hope it becomes Honey's Cone of Success.

      If it helps any, my baby had to wear a cone and was covered by prayer and it all turned out wonderfully! See?









      Remember my sick little Lexi? And she was just a little itty, bitty baby!
