I'm Becoming A Real Freaking Perfectionist

I've been doing home studio recording of my tunes since 1977. Back in the
early days, things were really bad. A crappy home studio cost a fortune. If
I got anything that sounded half way decent, I was happy.

Today, $600 will get you a digital recording studio that kicks the ass of
anything that was around in the 60s or even the 70s.

So I just finished this one tune and was going into the mastering phase. Now
before I started mastering, what I had was already better than anything I
had done even 5 years ago. But I wanted the sound just right.

I decided it needed some compression on the high end so I pulled up the
small compression preset, but I didn't like it. It compressed it a little too
much for my taste.

The settings were:

low -7 db
mid -7 db
high -13db

Those are all minus settings.

Well, it still wasn't quite right. So I fiddled with the preset a little and
finally came up with

low -5 db
mid -5 db
high -10 db

And yes, there was a definite difference if you listened hard enough. And
with the audition feature, you could actually switch back and forth
between the two in order to hear the difference.

4 hours to get just the right settings.

So when did I become such a freaking perfectionist when 30 years ago
a 4 channel analog recorder with a bass and treble mixer would have been
good enough for me?

I gotta get a life.

Quit freaking and just be a perfectionist, it's much less stressful

I know what you mean though.
In music when I play the drums I'm that way.
I also have that problem with hydroponic growing.
I love to design and build hydro systems but when it comes to using them I lose all interest.
The reason is I know how to analyze and adjust each individual macro and micro nutrient from my college days. Unless you are growing exotics like some Orchids it isn't worth the expense. With what is available commercially as far as nutrients go all you can really do is set the TDS (total dissolved solids) level or EC (electrical conductivity) level and the ph.
So I build systems, make sure they work, then tear them down and build another.

You can't fix stupid, but you can always out smart it.

Thom, maybe there are support groups for people like us.

Now this brings back some memories

I built a studio back in 1979 (had to tear it out in 1984 ) where I went to every carpet store I could drive to with my truck and pulled the old jute padding out of their dumpters.

You won't believe what a nasty job that was...

I put 6 layers of jute padding on every wall, door and the ceiling.

I was in a band that played 3 nights a week, so we could practice on the other nights in my converted 1 1/2 car garage.

I had a TEAC 3340 reel to reel and the band's mixer ,mics, etc. to work with.

For some unknown reason, the neighbors didn't like a bass drum competing with their evening television shows.

OMG, you had a TEAC 3340?

            I had a TEAC A3440.

I guess it was the next higest model. I got it in 1977.

Yea, thinking about it, mine could have been the A3440, that was a LOOONG time ago.

I can't even remember what I had for breakfast this morning...:p

I think we had the same unit. Wonder if they even made a 3340?

I got 3 more songs to finish for the CD and then I can upload the contest
      tunes.

      Shouldn't be too long.
