not altogether unrelated to downturn in advertising revenue ...

BBC NEWS | Business | Murdoch signals end of free news

Plenty of mayhem raging through the media and press sectors currently.

Perhaps things are on the edge of a media "recession" with companies
falling over like the banks did.

Pay for FOX News? Mr. Murdoch could earn more money blowing smoke rings from his nether aperture.

It's a pay channel in the UK (funny enough by Murdochs sky satelite channels).

Why would anyone pay for corporate owned news? There was just a bill here about 2 years ago to fight further consolidation of the news. One of Bush's pals who owns several stations wanted to buy up a whole lot of other ones. I don't even know how that one turned out, but I do believe it lost - don't think the news will become more reliable just because it's owned by several corps instead of just one though - they are all subsidiaries at some point it seems.

Outside of a few local interest stories, all that would be is getting people to pay for the advertisement that passes for news now. Wonder how many consumers would suck that one up? Good plan for the corporation, though. Sure would defray advertising costs lobbyists are doling out now.
