Hi All,

This is probably not new to most here, however, its Earth Shaking for me.

I bought an XP laptop in 2002 And it's served me well.

I never bought any other PC because most everything I do I do with smart phones, starting way back with the first HTC droid til today with my iPhone 6+ and iPad air2.

However, sometimes you just need a PC and when the need came up I had my trusty 2002 Gateway XP.

Now, you all know what happened to XP and with the lack of support and all the bugs, it has almost become unusable for me at least for the Internet.

Today I decided to install Linux. I found Zorin and installed the lite version.

I have lightening speed surfing and everything else. I installed it side by side with XP so I didn't lose any files, pictures, photoshop etc.

I'm leaving this post with Zorin using firefox.

If I can install Linux so can anyone. If you are fighting with XP I say go for Zorin or another Linux version.

Non Techie,

George Wright

OK...I'm confused. I thought PC performance had more to do with your RAM and graphics card than the OS.

Can the OS really make that much of a difference? Yes, Windows 8 was a PITA, but that was because of the interface, not how it ran behind the scenes.

I will now open the gates for the techie flood...

Are you kidding? CPUs are SOOOOOOOOOOO much faster it is INCREDIBLE! My first 8x88 compatible CPU was 8Mhz(performance always good). My second one was 20Mhz(performance always steller!). My third one was 30Mhz, IIRC(My boss couldn't even believe how fast it was!!!)! My fourth one was about 100Mhz(performance started getting kind of iffy! WHY? Well, I sometimes ran windows on it, etc....).

Anyway, CPUs are now SO fast I can't believe it. My apple II 1Mhz needed cores and all to keep its class B certification. NOW, they have >2Ghz systems that apparently don't need cores!

As for memory? Supposedly it is far faster, but there ARE multiple layers of cache that make things faster.

Graphics card impact? Almost NOTHING in most cases, and it would be virtually ZERO if you didn't have a GUI based O/S! Graphics run quicker today, and they still don't speed up the average OS functions.

RAM? Are you kidding? They have sped up ram a LOT and the O/S is still slow.

So WHAT is slowing down the computer?

      1. OS!!!!!! Want proof? DOS didn't have this problem on slower hardware, and even M/S refers to it from time to time to sell new software.
      2. DISK! Want proof? Try defragmenting your drive, etc... Windows uses the drive a LOT!
      3. THEN RAM! And today ram can directly affect the video on some.
      4. Video is SOOOOO distant, unless you are into special complex graphics or things that use the card a LOT like games.
