OK, first of all, if you want to avoid the NASTY parts of this video, it starts at 3:32;

We may have ALL figured that rats were not so smart, and simply tried to get a treat from traps. This video is proof that that is likely NOT true! Did this rat figure the trap out? Did some rat somehow convey the danger? Did the rat somehow OBSERVE it in the past? Was it simply overly CAREFUL? WHO KNOWS?

MANY traps come PREBAITED, and it looks like THIS one was prebaited ALSO! The trip lever is scented and sometimes colored, so that the rat will be attracted to IT. It looks like the rat actually got away with EVERY bit of real food from this trap, but at 3:32, that initial bait causes it to actually grab the lever ITSELF, believing that MORE food was there, and the rat ends up facing a painful death. I show this NOT for that, but for the skillful way that everything ELSE is done:

    BTW it is a SHAME the rat couldn't push the trap under that lip, disabling the trap, or pushing it over snaping the trap safely and collecting all the food. Otherwise, that bait was the only problem.

    I'm surrounded by fields & sometimes in the winter we get field mice. Those bastages are hard as heck to get catch in a trap.

    I did learn to always put the trap along a wall & put peanut butter on the bottom of the metal where the food goes. That makes them work for the food [BAM !].
