I not known for my patience and added to that i just can't deal with mor_ns...
Reading the Main Forum this morning it just happened to be one of those days
where the threads are just plain stupid. (IMO)

Basic or unrelated questions asked by people who are either too lazy or or simply don't possess the capability to help themselves...

It's days like this that i realize that i could NEVER be a moderator, not here or on any forum where stupid rules the day because if i could i would be Banning by the hundreds...

What about you?
Do you think you could deal with this day in and day out?
  • They're havin' a field day with me today for sure.

Just been pulled from the Mind Warriors forum for waxin' philosopical about rejection, Chinese wisdom, and rugs.

I figure the Mods operate a 'random slaughter' policy in addition to the usual rules for drillin' down on racism/sexism/bullying and jpegs of guys & mules in the buff.

"Every 10th post by HIM gets flamed!"

"It's ok to yadda yadda about bananas in the OT forum, but anyone mentioning apricots GOTTA DIE!"

"My cat got sick, so I'm knifing this loser's request for assistance, just to get even with the Universe!"

I figure they need their own movie franchise, like Arnie did with TERMINATOR — only with less CGI and more ergonomic keyboards.

    THE MODERATOR

The thing that won't die, in the nightmare that never got started

Betcha there's a whole bunch of crap never makes it through thanks to these guys.

I've been a mod - and adminstrator - on several forums over the years. It was fun for the most part but they weren't "open to anyone anytime for anything" forums like this one.

Could I do it? Not here. Not now. I think the tipping point has been exceeded and Elvis has left the building...

I am a moderator and Admin on a few websites also.

There are times when people are absolutely trying. For the most part, people are decent when they're a part of a community.

I wouldn't be a fair moderator. As much as I talk about fairness and objectivity....there are some people here that I like, and some I don't. And that would color how I react to their posts.

So I would make a poor moderator.

    Banned
    It's not complicated.

    Irrelevant link spammers are obvious.

Knowing a niche makes a lot of self promotion obvious.

There's very few things on a forum that actually require thinking as far as moderating, example, two legit forum members bickering (AKA babysitting).

The one thing I would never want to deal with on this forum is the WSO section since some of those are scammers that involve other peoples money. No thanks.

Very few legit forum members ever get banned. It happens, but the percentage is so small it's not even a blip on the radar. Also, a Mod decides on the amount of time a ban last depending on the situation (each situation is unique).

Moderation is probably one of those roles (like Supreme Court judges) where actually wanting to be one should disqualify you from being considered.

When I saw this thread I asked myself who would make a good moderator. You were the first person that came to mind.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

I guess it also depends on the Forum itself. For example a African cichlid forum requires very little moderation except for the odd spammer or argument that gets out of hand.

In contrast a IM forum where the main aim is to make money combined with a selling platform (WF is only one of many) obviously attracts Ne'er-do-well's and other low lifes which makes things much more difficult...

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

By the standard definition of a "fair" moderator, absolutely not... But, I would be ruthlessly efficient in quickly making this forum a better place... and returning it to it's former glory... so, would I be a good moderator?

That would be a matter of perspective indeed.

I get worn out just reporting what I see. I think it would be a tough job for anyone. I don't think I want that kind of stress in my life.

However, I think here they make it harder than it needs to be. For example, they don't have clear posting rules (that is a long time issue - need to read several threads to get the meat and even then it's not the whole story), they don't abide by the rules they themselves set up such as no income claims or guarantees in WSOs, have sig rules that are iffy, etc.

I think if they used a little automation, had clear cut rules (and the unwritten rules matched the published ones), were consistent in meting out discipline, and listened to people that have been around for awhile (even if they don't go along they should listen) they could make the job much, much easier. Add a minimal signup fee - even $1 - and life gets even easier. But then there goes the advertising income which is based on views and users so that probably isn't going to happen.
