Songs That Should Be Movies

I haven't seen a good music thread here in a while and I was just thinking about this.

Post your songs that provide such a deep story that they could be movies in their own right.

Two that immediately come to mind for me are:

I can picture Michael Fassbender (He could pass for a Finn) as Roland, stalking Van Owen (played, amusingly enough, by Clive Owen) all across the globe.

And

I see this as a slightly edgier, '70s throwback version of Beautiful Girls. Kinda Beautiful Girls meets Dazed and Confused.

Here's another one that'd fit nicely into the "Dazed And Confused" genre but set in 1968.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

It's not a long song, but I reckon a creative director/scriptwriter could weave an interesting tale from Wichita Lineman. I see (a young) Tommy Lee Jones playing the lead, roaming the county and pining after his unrequited love - we never see her, but only hear her singing through the wire.

Alternatively, put Billy Bob Thornton in the role and make the lineman a serial killer. Either way, at least we'd start with a good soundtrack.

Here's one for the Lord Of The Rings/Game Of Thrones/medieval/fantasy/sword and sorcery genre. It's also a good excuse to listen to the remarkable voice of Sandy Denny as well

Has to be Tom Jones best-selling Number 1 version of "Green Green Grass of Home".

A man wakes up on death row on the day of his execution to realize he's been dreaming of his childhood. Haunting, classic, and would make a great film.

A man returns to his childhood home; it seems that this is his first visit home since leaving in his youth. When he steps down from the train, his parents are there to greet him, and his beloved, Mary, comes running to join them. All is welcome and peace; all come to meet him with "arms reaching, smiling sweetly." With Mary the man strolls at ease among the monuments of his childhood, including "the old oak tree that I used to play on." It is "good to touch the green, green grass of home." Yet the music and the words are full of foreshadowing, strongly suggestive of mourning.

Abruptly, the man switches from song to speech as he awakens in prison: "Then I awake and look around me, at four grey walls that surround me. And I realize that I was only dreaming." He is, indeed, on death row. As the singing resumes, we learn that the man is waking on the day of his scheduled execution ("there's a guard, and there's a sad old padre, arm in arm, we'll walk at daybreak"), and he will return home only to be buried: "Yes, they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree, as they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home."

That song's lyrics are quite deep.

All of us are in one type of prison or other.

Their walls may be invisible but they are prisons nonetheless.

We are all prisoners of doubt, fear, false pride, and, ultimately, death.

Regardless of how rich/poor, tall/short, ugly/good-looking we all are, we're all going to die.

The good news is we can free our minds. We can choose to live in the moment. Make it mean something instead of waiting yet another second... to die.

          Nice tune, though.

Actually there's any number of folk (traditional and contemporary) music, that could be turned into movies

When I saw the movie "Up" - this is the song it reminded me of. The song reminds me of my grandparents who raised me - and always brought me to tears.

  • This is kinda good n bittersweet moody as it stands, but mebbe Disney could figure it for teens like they did for kids with Inside Out.

I see penguins, bobbin' about and wavin' their flippers as their home melts into the polluted blue...

I think Bill Murray should star in a movie with this song title:
