It's going to be an interesting year. Can Kyrie and Kevin Love stay healthy. For that matter, can Rose, Durant, Westbrook, Kobe, Wade, etc... play a whole season? Will the Spurs really improve or will father time finally catch up with them? Can my Warriors repeat and prove the naysayers wrong?

I can't wait for the season to start because the 49ers are bad and the Giants won't make the mlb playoffs.

Back to BB and the upcoming season. My Warriors have had a fairly unimpressive preseason, looking lethargic, not in sync and uninspired. I was a bit worried but after last night's game I think all is well. They looked very sharp.

By the way Robert, I'm talking to this sexy lady who lives in San Antonio who is a big Spurs fan. We're talking about meeting there for a Spurs/Warriors game and having a bet on the game, (:p) tour the city and spend the weekend together. If you want to have a drink while I am there let me know. I've never been to SA by the way.

  • I think my Nuggets will be slightly improved this year, mostly because Galinari should be healty. He really came on strong at the end of last season after missing almost two years with a knee injury.

Plus Brian Shaw is gone and there was some real problems in the locker room last season between him and the team. Having Shaw gone should is another reason we should be a little better.

Mudiay should be a great addition, but expecting him to be better as a rookie than Ty Lawson was, is asking a little too much. There's also a couple of young Europeans that have looked pretty good in preseason.

We've been really banged up in preseason, which has hurt our performance as of late, but nothing serious and should get healthy soon.

I doubt we'll make the playoffs, but shouldn't be an easy win for other teams. There's really not much hope, but we do have 4 first round draft picks in next year's draft. Plus we have the option to swap picks with the Knicks. I'll be rooting really hard against the Knicks all year long.

Hopefully, we can get a high pick from the Knicks and maybe use the other 3 picks to package and trade up to grab another franchise type player to go with Mudiay.

  • Break up the Nuggets! Good win...beating Houston by 20 in Houston. I think it's important for this team to get some wins early to build confidence.

Mudiay looked good, except for 11 turnovers. He's had issues with TOs in the preseason. But other than that, he looked good and actually outplayed Ty Lawson IMO.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Good win for you guys. Looking at the box score your defense was impressive. Malone had a big part to do with the Warriors defense improving so much under Mark Jackson. If he can do the same with the Nuggets they will be tough.

Mudiays turnovers are a concern but we went through the same thing with Curry until last year. Lebron, Westbrook, Curry, Harden .... all have high turnover numbers. It's just a matter of managing it better.

I just love seeing Houston lose though, so yay Nuggets!

    • Lol. Bad shooting night for the Nuggets.

Houston, we have a problem. The Rockets are playing terrible. The warriors just totally out played them and shut them down with their defense. Two straight blowout losses at home and honestly, the Warriors didn't play great on offense. It could have been much much worse.

The Rockets problem? I think it's the Kardashian effect. Harden is dating a Kardashian and that is the kiss of death for an NBA player. ( no pun intended )

      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • How about after the season, the Lakers hire Luke Walton as head coach and get Jerry West as Kupchak's right hand man, in charge of the draft?

Not only would this help strengthen the Lakers, it would weaken the Ws at the same time. Plus, they're both Lakers.

IMO, Jerry West has proven he's the best judge of talent in NBA history. He's done it time and time again.

    • Houston lost last night again to the Kings who didn't have Rondo. Cousins completely out played Howard who had only 4 points and 4 rebounds.

Another disappointing team this year so far are the Clippers. They will be lucky to get 50 wins the way they are going. With arguably three of the top 20, maybe even 15, players in the league they just aren't getting it done and are under performing. I just don't think Doc Rivers is a very good coach or GM, but the Clippers seem committed to him. They play the Spurs at San Antonio Friday. I don't see that being a close game the way both teams are playing. lol.

Tomorrow night the Thunder will visit the Cavs. Now that game should be a good one!

By the way, the Bucks, who stopped the Warriors win streak, were caught in an LA strip club in the early morning hours on the day they played the Lakers and lost by 18! Good grief.

I'm looking forward to this one, after hearing for months how Cleveland would have beaten the Warriors if they were at full strength. So now, all the pressure is on them to show what they can do. Should be a good game but since the Warriors are playing at home I expect them to win it.

    • As good as Draymond Green was last year, he is much better this year. Jerry West says he is a top ten player in the league and I have to agree. He is leading the league in triple doubles and just might win defensive player of the year this year. He has greatly improved in his ball handling and is 6th in the league in assists. Plus, he just may have the highest basketball IQ in the league. Right now, he is third in the allstar balloting among Western Conference front court players, so he may be a starter in that game. Is he better than Blake Griffin and Anthony Davis? Yes, imo.

I was never impressed with Blatt as a NBA head coach. The Cavs offense, which was supposed to be Blatt's strong point, looked terrible. Too many ISOs and very little creativety. How much of that was him and how much was Lebron, who likes to control everything it seems, we will see.

Defense? You can't defend that. You would need two clones of Manute Bol hanging around the half court line.

I dunno about comparing him to Jordan quite yet but he has the best handles i've ever seen and that includes Magic
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Incidentally all these comparisons going back as far back as Magic have one serious flaw. None of the players then if you brought back from time in their prime would be the same players. The rules have changed to assist the offensive player and the competition has changed fueled by a whole lot more money involved. Magic wouldn't be magic. He'd train more scientifically and he would benefit from the rules changes
  • Spurs fans want to know, where's James Silas when you need him?

I think James Silas was one of the most underrated players of all time. In the ABA he averaged about 24 points a game later in his career and was a great defensive player too, along the lines of Walt Frazier.

He blew out a knee and never really recovered. Coach Doug Moe shifted the focus from James Silas to a young George Gervin. I've heard Gervin praise Moe for making Gervin's career.

The Blazers were a hot team before the All Star break and look like they will continue that trend. They will be a tough out in the playoffs. The Spurs also lost their first game back from the All Star break on Thursday, then bounced back with a win last night. Tonight the Warriors play the second game of a back to back on the road against another hot team, the Clippers. Should be a good one, but I think the Dubs will bounce back and avoid losing two in a row for the first time this year.

  • Some surprises up to now this season.

In the East the Knicks seem quite decent and their #1 pick Porzingis appears like he is likely to be considered a very good participant and support the Knicks immediately. Detroit looks extremely improved. The Hawks remain playing perfectly after many anticipated them to fall faraway from previous years 60 plus succeed season. HEAT are playing excellent likewise, which maybe is not a surprise.

In the West, the Jazz and the Timberwolves appear to be they can produce the playoffs this total year. The Pelicans, who I thought will be a top team, experienced major problems getting going due to injuries and sub par play by Davis. The Grizzlies happen to be struggling and may well not make the playoffs.

Also, last night Draymond Green became the first player in history to get 1000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists, 100 blocks and 100 steals in a season! Pretty impressive feat that shows his versatility.

A lot of firsts and records being set this year. The Spurs just won their 38th straight home game to open a season. They and the Warriors could both go undefeated at home this year.

Meanwhile Lebron seems unhappy in Cleveland already. I get t he impression he wants out. Lol I think some team in the East may beat them in the playoffs. Toronto perhaps.

Honestly though, they haven't been at their best since that part of the season when the blew out the Cavs, Spurs and Thunder among others. I would say the Spurs have been better since then.

I almost wish the warriors would lose Thursday so they can forget about the record and concentrate on playing championship level ball again which they aren't at all doing now. Then again, they play the Spurs next at home. It's almost a must win and that isn't regarding no record. It's a must win to get back on track before the playoffs and secure the home court advantage.

    • What a disappointing ending to a great year for the Spurs. They just didn't have it and OKC was clearly the better team.

Tim, if I was a Warrior fan I would have been praying for a Miracle that the Spurs would have miraculously come back and won these last two games....because OKC is gonna be really really tough.

I'm saying the Series goes to Warriors but it will go full 7 games .

IMO, here is the key to beating Warriors:
Go head to head with Curry just like the Blazers with Mccollum, Crabbe, and Lillard did the last two games. A basket or two going a different way in those last two games would have put the Warriors down 3-2 going to Portland for Game 6.

Some might say a team will get blown out trying to stay with Curry and company but the Blazers did it.
Even with Curry's brilliant ending Wednesday night, the Blazers could have cut it to one point but missed a basket at the end.

Also, some might say a team should be more conservative and stick with easier pick and rolls and hit 10 footers and then just contain Curry on the other end.
Sure Curry might have a bad half like the last game but you are NOT going to contain him sooner or later. You're just not.

I say Westwood and Durant, and maybe Waiters need to trade baskets with him and go head to head at his pace and go for a lot of threes. It's a real long shot but that's the only way they have a chance imo.

Still picking Dubs though to win 2nd year in a row

    • today on Yahoo Kevin Durant Quote (being compared to tim Duncan) ......
“Obviously, it was an easy comparison, two small-market teams, but we come from different backgrounds, different personalities and we handle things differently,” Durant told The Vertical. “He does stuff his way, and it’s been nothing but successful and I’m going to handle stuff my way. I’ve had my ups and downs, just like any other person. I did it my way, and I’m trying to create my own path.”

Obviously there are many ways to skin a cat. Tim Duncan and the Spurs is one way to do it. Michael Jordan and his ego is another way to get Championships.

That being said I think it is ironic the very last part of what Durant says above ( " I’ve had my ups and downs, just like any other person. I did it my way, and I’m trying to create my own path.”)

He's right you would have never heard Duncan saying anything close to that. It was all about team ball even when he first started with Robinson. I think even Curry believes similar to Duncan as well as Magic and Bird.

Interesting enough Barkley and the Jett were saying constantly on TNT this past week if Westwood and Durant really trusted and believed in their Teammates like Kanter and Adams and penetrated then passed off to them for wide open shots ...the thunder would be unbeatable.

I think their is some Truth to this. So not sure if Durant will ever win the big one until he realizes its more about the Team than himself. Maybe Barkley had the same mentality and we all know how that story ended
      • [1] reply
    • Yeah pretty shocking . Those Warrior fans looked like they didn't know what hit them ( trust me I can relate lol) .And Barkley afterwards saying that OKC is the better team and keeps saying it.

Of course we saw this scenario last year against the Grizzley and Cavs. People thought it was over for the Dubs after losing at home.

I will say that Thunder is better than those two teams, imo.

      Tim can you say Seep

j/k... I wouldn't at all be surprised if Dubs win next three. Its going to be a great series.

Yeah I agree. I like Durant as well. He seems like a class act even though he may need to be more team oriented. I wouldn't mine him getting a championship and would like to see it. Westbrook not so much
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • For OKC I think they need at least one more good win just to solidify Durant for at least another year. I could see them winning it all next year but they are still a step off for this one. Durant feeling like they are just not in the same league with the West top team could have some horrible OKC consequences so I am rooting for a 6 even 7 game series
      • [ 1 ] Thanks

    • Warriors smacked the heck out of Thunder. I have a feeling they will take one maybe both at OKC.
Tim, just got thru reading today's SI. It;s got your boy Draymond on front cover.

Really good article. What a crazy guy ( not in a bad way) Izzo says Green is nothing now compared to like he was at MSU as far as being amped up.

Also, he and Kerr yell back and forth at each other numerous times saying "F@ck you,,,no F@ck you". They have actually had to be restrained in the locker room before. Kerr chalks it up to a close knit family with an edge and that he wouldn't have it any other way lol

    • Yeah really taken me by surprise with how good the Cavs are playing. I just hate to think of big head Lebron getting another Championship.

  • Some boring playoff games so far...Hopefully when the underdogs play at home they'll have a little better showing.
    • [1] reply
    • Yeah, some lopsided series so far but I think 3 or 4 could be interesting. Dallas pulled off an upset over OKC in Oklahoma. By the way, I liked how the Dallas players interrupted Westbrooks pregame dance routine. VillaNuevo says "If you want to go dancing, go to a nightclub." Lol.

Another possible good series is between the Hornets and Heat, although the Heat had a blowout in game one. Plus, I'm pulling for a Detroit upset in game two against the Cavs. Game one was very competitive.

The Raptors/Pacers series is tied 1/1. I would like to see the Raptors win because I think they would have a better shot at beating the Cavs.

I still think Portland could make it an interesting series against the Clips also.

Maybe Boston can get a win at home like Kurt says and make it interesting against a tough Atlanta defense.

Anyways, round two should be much more competitive.

    • Looks like Curry will be out for at least a couple weeks and perhaps the rest of the season. It's going to make it tough but I still think they have a great shot without him. Thompson, Green, Iguodala, Livingston, Barnes. .. everyone would need to step up and play consistently. Especially against the Spurs if they make it that far.
      • [1] reply
  • I hate injuries in sports, even to the teams I don't care for, and think Curry being out seriously hurts their chances for the title. IMO, the Spurs look to be the favorites now.

BTW, if the Dubs do win the title, how does this affect Curry being the most valuable player? He may be the BEST player, but can we say he's the most valuable if they win the championship without him?
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • I think so. He has been so valuable (imo) he has single handily made every player around him on the Warriors that much better.

    • Andre Drummond, who this year had the worst free throw percentage in the history of the nba, says he is willing to try the underhand technique that hall of famer Rich Barry used during his career to shoot over 90%. Good for him. I remember Barry taught the Warriors center George Johnson to shoot underhanded and Johnson became an 80% shooter.

So many bad free throw shooters have refused to even consider this style because it doesn't look cool. Good grief! Shooting 40% and shooting air balls doesn’t look cool either! The Warriors center from a few years ago Andris Biedrins basically became a head case who didn't want to touch the ball on offense because he didn't want to shoot free throws. It literally ruined his career but he didn't want to try the underhanded style. Ridiculous! Rick Barry even offered to teach him. Smh.

  • Condolences to Robert and his Spurs...

...And I'm shocked that OKC beat Tim's Ws. I would have bet the ranch on the Ws this game. OKC makes me bi-polar. As much as I like Durant, I dislike Westbrook. OKC beating both the Spurs (twice) and Ws on the road is a surprise.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • In Barkley's defense, he made a good point in the post game show about teams playing the Ws should go big and not small. If you go small you're not going to be equal with the W's smalls. You have to do something they aren't doing...make them match up with your bigs.
    • [1] reply
    • I was thinking before the game that if okc was going to win a game here it would be the first. When okc got killed in the first game of the Spurs series I thought that they just weren't ready for that level of play. That loss brought them up to speed so to speak. I think this loss by the Dubs may do the same. The Warrior's level of competition in recent weeks wasn't the same as the Thunder's. I feel confident they will respond well, win the next game at home and at least one in okc to regain home court. We'll see.

I obviously want and expect the Warriors to win it all but if they don't I wouldn't mind seeing okc win it. They just better not choke in the finals again like they did against Miami. Ok, that was mostly Harden choking but still...

  • Stupid ping pong balls. The Nuggets have had a lottery pick 14 times. 6 times, including today, they stayed with their original position. 8 times they moved down. Not once in 14 times have they moved up. Actually, the #7 is from the Knicks left over from the Carmelo trade. Nuggets had #9 with the option of trading with the Knicks for whichever pick was higher. So the Nuggets had two chances to move up this year and didn't with either.

Congrats to TL and the Lakers getting #2. It would have been bad had they dropped to 4 or lower and would have lost their pick. With Kobe leaving they also have a lot of cap space. It will be interesting to see if they can still lure top players.

And Philly shouldn't be rewarded with the top pick because they've tanked for 3 years. I'm tired of teams that tank being rewarded for deliberately losing. Maybe the NBA should take the bottom 7-10 teams and give the teams with the BEST records the best chances in the lottery? This way, even if a team is out of the playoffs they still have something to compete for...but something has to be done about tanking.

Oh well...good news is we have picks #7, #15 and #19. Maybe we can trade 7 and one of the others to move up a few spots and draft Buddy Hield. We really need a shooter, not more pretty good players.

Hield is being compared to Curry, but I don't see it other than they both can shoot 3s. From what I've seen Hield only shoots 3 either stationary or going to his left, although he does shoot those very well and with great range. I also don't see Curry's playmaking ability in Hield. But, Hield seems like a good guy and how can you not root for a guy called Buddy?
    • [ 2 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • Yeah, Kurt, I agree with you about the tanking, especially when a team does it year after year. When it's that blatant the league needs to do something. It isn't fair for 6er fans and just makes the league look bad.

Looks like the Lakers will get a good player next year. Funny prank was played on Luke Walton yesterday by a Warrior colleague who texted Luke that the Lakers lost their pick. Luke apparently fell for it. Lol

    • What is it about Westbrook that you don't like Kurt? I know he can be annoying at times but he is such an amazing talent. Usually he is prone to choking at the end of close games and not passing enough but those days may be over.
      • [1] reply
  • I don't care who you are. Golden State better not lose tonight. They are in a most precarious position, down 2-1 and the next game is not at home - after being blown the hell out in game #3. Sorry, but If anyone gets down 3-1 it's over and just a matter of time.

BTW, Tim, you dodged a whiff of grapeshot with the NBA allowing Draymond Green to play - after what he did to Adams. Sure, there is "kick ball" in basketball but not of that sort.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • Yes, a must win game I admit. The Thunder are playing great ball, beating the Spurs easily after getting blown out themselves. They look very determined. It's going to take a great effort to beat them tonight, from everyone. The Warriors got to play smart, pass the ball, don't turn it over, don't foul, take good shots, rebound and play their best d. And shoot well too! Lol. That's the plan Stan.

What a great gamelast night! I knew one of those teams could step up and challenge the Cavs. Lowry, Derosen, carroll, and the little Mutumbo are playing inspired ball also. Could turn into two great 7 game series.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • We all said the same thing this time last year against Memphis and then Cavs in the Finals. The Warriors can draw on this experience. I still say the Dubs will take this one way or the other.

Watch for Curry to be on fire tonight
  • Looks like the NBA would have done the Ws a favor if they would have suspended Green.
    • [1] reply
    • Yep. At least for one game it didn't matter if he played or not. A game off may have enabled him to refocus.

To me, this next game is a test of the Warriors coaching staff. I haven't seen a lot of adjustments to what the Thunder are doing. Yes, the Warriors need to play smarter and harder but the coaching staff needs to help them by making some changes to what okc is doing. Perhaps as Robert says, there aren't any answers. I just think if they can get one win at home they will have a couple more days to figure things out.

  • Cavs fan here. I've kept quiet up until now since this thread has really seemed to be the "Offical Western Conference Thread" and not so much the NBA thread But now that the Cavs are playing the Western conference, I guess it's safe to open my big mouth.

I gotta say I've really enjoyed these playoffs so far. The last Golden State/OKC game was fantastic -- and as a Cavs fan made me worried no matter who we had to face. Curry, not-surprisingly, was amazing. And I have to give props to the Raptors too. Watching Lowry and Deroza was a real treat -- even if I found myself biting my nails as they hit basket after basket. I have no doubt that I'll have the same feelings of awe and trepidation when Curry and Thompson start putting on their own basketball tutorial.

But with Cavs finally seeming to put it all together -- and with the Warriors having it together since day one of the regular season -- I think this is gonna be a great series. Really looking forward to it. My real hope is to see 7 games, no matter who wins in the end.

    Good luck to both teams!

  • Love's concussion protocol was a blessing in disguise. Lue was forced to make a lineup change which he should have done since 3rd quarter of game 2.

Interesting to see what he will do with Love once he comes back. I say he get him off the bench and stay with his starting lineup of RJ at 3 and LBJ on 4. Game 2 was an eye opener. No one on the team except for James can guard Draymond Green 1 on 1 and it showed in Game 3 (6 points)

If Kerr decides to start Iggy over Bogut, then it's a new ballgame.

  • What's going on with the splash brothers? Tim, where does that moniker originate from? Is this series going to be all blowouts? Well now it's going at least 5 games.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • Not sure really, TL. I think a big part of their low scoring in this series has been because of the Cavs defense on them and Curry and Klay's willingness to pass the ball and let their teammates score. However Curry hasn't played anywhere close to what he's done all year in these playoffs except for a few games. Thompson is a streaky shooter but has had his best post season by far in these playoffs unail the finals. The Warriors didn't really need them to score in the first two games but did need them in game three.

The nickname splash brothers was coined by a writer for the Warriors website in 2012 and is a play on nickname bash brothers which was used for Oakland Athletics stars José Canseco and mark Mcguire.

  • I think they played a good season that rather
  • Just wishful thinking on my part, but I wonder if the Cavs would take our #7 in the first round and Kenneth Faried for Kevin Love? I think Faried would fit in well with the Cavs since he doesn't need to have the ball on offense and we really need a scorer.
    • [1] reply
    • That may be a deal the Cavs would go for. I would if I were them. I'm just glad the Warriors didn't trade Klay for love like there were thinking of doing two years ago. I believe the Logo was strongly against that trade.

    • Curry needs to play with emotion. I've seen him play great many times after getting pissed. Hopefully he'll keep that anger going into game seven Sunday.

I don't think it's the Cavs defense TL. For example, Barnes is missing so many wide open shots the Cavs feel like they don't have to try to guard him. Hell, they probably want him to shoot at this point. Barnes value as a free agent probably has gone down a few dozen millions because of his play in these playoffs.

The Warriors just won the first two games too easily without really playing their best ball. They were thinking sweep like I was probably and then let the Cavs get their confidence. I expect a great game Sunday because the Warriors play pretty good with their backs against the wall too.

  • I have enjoyed the insights from all of you all year. This has been the only thread I regularly return to.

Whichever team wins they deserve it. Can't always say that ever year.

I have been rooting for GS the whole series and I still hope they win. Like most people I hope it is a close game. Curry has had so many special games all year I hope he has one for the record books.

I hate the officiating in the finals and even quit watching them for many years. It has never made sense to me to start allowing them "to play". For an athlete to play one way for the entire season and then the same fouls are now suddenly overlooked is rediculus. I don't care what anyone says it does not make for better basketball. Some of the games this year have just been outright brawls under the basket. Six fouls going on at the same time and none of them called. Then some player gets called for something that was overlooked just a minute earlier. How can you get consistent and fair officiating when it is so hit and miss. No wonder the players get so angry when the calls are so random and arbitrary. I say it would be much better to attempt to officiate the same way they do all year. End of rant!

Let's hope for a good game in 5 minutes!

  • I feel for you Tim....but it's also good that Cleveland finally won a championship in any sport.
    • [ 4 ] Thanks
  • Wow! What a game & the drought is over for Cleveland. What a story. Lebron ditching Cleveland ( after the Browns also ditched Cleveland) then coming back home - after trailing 3 games to 1 , to win a championship for all the Cleveland fans who have suffered for over fitty years.

I got exactly what I wanted, a great game from wire to wire. Tim, I'm not sure what to say except "that's why they play the games". I predicted before the game via text to one of my nephews that no team would score more than 92 points and I was off by a point. At less that 90 points in this most crucial game, I'm going to have to say that the mighty Warrior offense was D'd Up. While Cleveland coach Tyron Lue gets the last laugh on his critics.

    Key stats:

    - Warriors only 38% from the field & go only 10-13 from the line while the Cavs go 21-25 in Arco.

    - Splash Brothers go only 12-36 from floor.

    FYI:

Look out for these same teams to meet up again in the NBA Finals for the rubber match next year.

I watched the game with my 82 year-old uncle who was raised in Cleveland and he loved it. The toasted peach danish smothered in vanilla ice cream at the beginning of the 4th period was scrumptious - to say the least.

Unfortunately, that's all she wrote for this 2015-2016 NBA season. The king is dead, long live the king.

Thats the problem with the long long ball. it will bring in you into greatness and leave you hangin at the wrong time as well. Steph has the skillls to break down a defense with his dribble and drive to the basket more but his three point long ball keeps him form doing it and developing it more where most of the time he would get the basket or draw the foul

      "there is another"

Let not forget OKC will have something big to say about that

  • BTW, with Cleveland winning a championship, I believe that San Diego is now the city with the longest championship drought for any of the 4 main sports leagues.

    • Reports saying the Bulls traded Derrick Rose to the Knicks for Lopez, Calderon, Grant and a pick. Also, Atlanta reportedly traded Teague to Pacers.

  • In before the draft...my realistic "wish list" (meaning Simmons won't be available) is (in order):

    Hield
    Bender
    Chriss

    • Well, the Nuggets didn't pick Chris but it sounds like they got some very good talent. Damn, seemed like every other pick was by the Celtics, Nuggets or sixers.

  • Wow...Durant signs with Tim's Dubs. It looks good on paper, but I'm not sure there's enough shots to go around.
