Appropriate or being too thin skinned and bowing down to PC groups ?

California to ban 'Redskins' for school sports, keep Confederate building names
  • Profile picture of the author ThomM
But Brown, who last year signed a bill outlawing the sale of faux Confederate currency at the state Capitol gift shop, said local decision-makers should choose names for schools and parks.
But not their sports teams. What an idiot.

If the vast majority of native Americans don't like it - should people use it??

I think not - as a common curtesy.

67 Percent of Native Americans Say

I have a feeling that the 67% number against it is more true than the surveys claiming the majority of native Americans have no problem with the name.

I guess the Braves is also offensive. This shit wouldn't happen If everyone would stop voting for change.

BTW, It would be nice to own 1,500th share of a casino because of something that happened +200 years ago.

Surely you can see the difference between a name for a warrior or a tribe like the Seminoles, or the Fighting Irish and a word that has been considered an ethnic slur for a 100 years? Do you think it would be ok to name a team The Wet Backs or the Slope Heads or The Slant Eyes or The Towel Heads?

So the Fighting Irish aren't terrorist?

See how stupid the rant is?

Wow - California has a huge drought - forest fires - eocnomic problems due to both of those and more....but there's time to mandate political correctness....

Our local university changed from Redskins to Red Hawks back in the 90's....it took about 10-15 years of dithering and fussing...but they got it done. Between 1970 and the 90's the Indian graphic used to portray the "Redskins" was by an artist and approved for use by the Chief of the Miami Indian tribe.

I have no idea what real American Indians think about it - all the fussing I've seen over use of "Indians" or "Redskins" has been from the PC police.

I think a name deemed offensive to a group of people should not be used. Just don't think a state needs to be dictating it.

That said - I wouldn't changed a damned thing for people like this woman:

A female Native American speaker led a crowd in a chant of “down, down USA” at the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
Not surprising there are people like this woman - but I'm always shocked by how quickly others are willing to join the chant. Wonder how many doing the chanting collect govt benefits....

So, 10 to 15 years of dithering and fussing is preferable to a very simple bill? Confused.

By the way, we're doing just fine out here dispite the fires and drought, thank you.

This was back in the mid-80s to late 90's - before everyone else jumped on the PC bandwagon. Yes, it took debate and consensus and quite a bit of dithering. Part of that was BECAUSE the Miami Indian tribe had approved the "mascot". One group thought it was not right to use "Indians" - while another thought it might be an insult to stop using the term.

In the end - they reached what I think is the right decision - 15 years before California had to mandate it - and they did it by people compromising and coming together...rather than by a dictate.

Yes, I think that's a better way. The will of the people might be slow and messy but it's far better than the whims of govt.

California didn't "have" to mandate it. We just did and became the first state to do so as we have often done in the past on many issues. Other cities have "mandated" the same thing including Houston Texas and Madison, Wisconsin, but no state had done so.

By the way, we had a simular situation in a local college back in 1972. Several hundred Native American students ( not pc police ) petitioned Stanford to change their sports name which was the Indians. The student body voted and agreed. Then the President made a ruling and changed the name. All within a few months. Not 25 years of dithering and fussing. Lol

That would be ranting against the current socialist government.

Hardly socialist. Remember the top 10 most prosperous countries who you wanted us to compete against? All WAY more socialist.

Wow, I was wrong. I thought Tim was in the Northeast - something he posted about NYC and a schedule of dates or something. I had it wrong - he's in California...explains a lot.

Lol. But I love NYC also. Not the Knicks or Phil Jackson though. Btw saw the score from the Spurs game tonight. All I can say is Tim Duncan is unreal! And he and Aldridge together will be tough to beat.
