The mission, called Luna 27, is set for launch in 5 years time

Europe and Russia mission to assess Moon settlement

Lead European scientist for the mission, Dr James Carpenter of the European Space Agency, explains why the south pole of the Moon may be rich in resources for a human colony . . .

Is life possible on the south pole of the Moon?

I'm all for as many people as possible to populate the moon. There'll be more room and resources and less pollution left here for us.

I don't understand how someone could "colonize" a satellite when there's no indigenous means of life support. You can't have a whole population depending on water from elsewhere, artificial atmosphere, etc. The first thing that goes wrong, and you've got a dead population. So why bother?

    • Mebbe they could pipe the water over, same as they do for deserts and stuff.

Pipes would have to be elastic to allow for the Moon's orbit, an' if you made 'em elastic enough, you could pull the moon in close enough to the Earth to make the switch to regular pipes.

      It's gonna happen.

Excellent point. If they're going to spend that much money on building an atmosphere, why not spend it on fixing up the one we've got on Earth.

They'd better be careful what they do on the moon someone or something might not like them being there.

Are you suggesting that there are Aliens already up there? Lined up on the ridge watching the astronauts. Come on, spit it out.

Nightclubs would fail miserably on the Moon, no atmosphere.

Not suggesting - they've been filmed.

      Of course, it's called "moonlighting."

Speaking of celestial bodies, anyone know why the thread Claude started about multiple Earths might have been deleted? Last time I read it, it was pretty benign.

I asked for it to be deleted. After I read the replies, I reread my post. The idea I was trying to convey wasn't clear enough. I tried editing it several times, and it wasn't going to work.

No. I read the replies, and then realized my point was not clear. So I tried to make it clearer, and gave up.

            Apparently, I did that twice.

You made the point so clear that a baby would have understood. What exactly wasn't clear?
Any chance the edited version will appear any time soon?

Probably not. I don't have an edited version. I could tell by the responses, that my meaning wasn't coming through. If it was clear to you, then I'm happy. I tried to cover it from every angle...hence the length of the post.

I don't know if this will make sense, but when writing my post, I had to keep about four ideas in my mind at the same time. I wrote quickly and it was written as I thought it.

It's actually a highly complex idea, and very hard to explain in a way that most people will get.

That doesn't mean I'm right, just that the concept isn't easy to explain. And based on the serious replies, I could see that I failed to get the idea across. So rather than let people continue to reply to a flawed idea, I just had it deleted.

Thank you, Dennis. It isn't that the thread didn't go the way I wanted. It's that my original post didn't get the idea across well enough.

So Claude accidently starts a thread that's interesting for a change, then deletes it. That's so claude-like.

On another note, I don't participate much in some of the physics related threads, not because I don't like science, but I find it too difficult and too time consuming to type out responses that require really deep thought. For me, subjects like this are much better in person than on forums.

How do you know? What exactly does "in person mean" anyway? Are you insinuating that he's different face to face, in person, in the flesh, than here in the forum?

          Terra;

One on one, you aren't side tracked by a dozen side arguments. You can communicate faster one on one, as well. It's not that anyone is a different person on the forum, it's that complex ideas are better exchanged with two people, rather than a group of diverse experiences.

There are several people here that I would love to exchange ideas with, one on one. But a dozen voices really muddies the water, and misunderstandings take over.

I agree with Kurt, a deep discussion is far more enjoyable one on one.

i said, "In person" because I was insulting Kurt. And that was really the only reason I made that post.

The flaw in your thinking is that you think people like Kurt just fine here. What you don't know is that Kurt has received about 200 death threats from Forum Members in the last year alone.
