NASA Set To Make Huge Announcement On Thursday Regarding Mars' Atmosphere

NASA Set To Make Huge Announcement On Thursday Regarding Mars' Atmosphere | IFLScience

This is not a joke.

If they come out saying that they now have evidence that there is an atmosphere like Earth, I'm going to be the first to tell Shane that he's right.

It may kill me, but I'll do it.

On the other hand, this would seem that NASA is creating a giant conspiracy and is hiding facts to be wrong. Win some, lose some.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

I just rewrote your sentence so a human being could understand it.

"Kurt" is the sound Klingons make when they belch.

By the way, I saw Ken Michaels thought your post was funny. Revenge will be swift, Michaels.

I was going to say the same thing about "Kurt", but with the rash of Bannings, I thought I would tone it down.

"Claude" is actually the Klingon God Of Masculinity. Every Klingon knows that.

No. I was talking about their announcement about water being found. But it follows that they could also discover something about the atmosphere, from the same evidence...or the same batch of evidence.

Yeah, maybe something that makes a manned mission to Mars more plausible, or something that we need to study, that makes a manned mission necessary.

                      I guess we'll know tomorrow.

LOL, gee what is going on NASA grow a brain????

Claude Tells me that l am right, might have to frame that one?

So NASA is finally telling some of the truth, never thought that l would see the day, but a third party rover will land there in about 4 years, so, only a matter of time that it will all come out!

The third party rover would inevitably see a babbling martian brook, most likely with simple plant life and something swimming about!

                      Major announcement, let me guess?

NASA has found trace elements of oxygen in Mars atmosphere, that might account for a 20% of constituents!

And Mars air pressure data might be flawed!

Or in other words, Mars can support life, and we have been BS's since viking!

Still, p**** at NASA, but it is good that they are opening up!

Maybe some alien visited Obama, and did a half nelson on him, saying tell everyone, or we will reply the scene out of "The Day the Earth Stood Still", original) with the Washington park, but in color!

I'd better go and dust off my "Told You So, Speeck Again"!

Strong cups of tea, do work?

Shane, you may find this page interesting. Check out the 2 photographs (both blue sky's) and the short NASA video.

In particular, look at the second photo and see those clouds in the sky, very earth like sky there. (hmmmmm) Either that's an earth pic or Mars has a very earth like sky.

Yes, thanks Lanfear, the first image is an actual Mars image, and odd's on the second is a computer simulation of what they think Mars used to look like!

Although l have seen very earth like clouds in reflective martian rocks, and storm clouds on occasion.

But fate of Mars atmosphere sounds pretty lame, but l suspect that if they are prepared to say that there is water flowing then?

If it is a biggie, (which it most likely is) then it will become obvious that NASA is going for full disclosure, but doing it in a piece by piece way, so as not to scare the crap out of everyone, especially individuals who have gone for everything NASA has told us!

Probably before the year 2030, we will know that Mars is earth like and has several races living on the surface, and a good 1000 years ahead of us!

And Probably give the poor a break, about time!

But at the moment, l expect them to say that oxygen is present and it will be a bonus if they mention that the air pressure is more earth like than moon like!

Then it will be payback time, mmmarrrrrrrrrhhhh!

                            Shane;

Are you willing to accept what they say as fact, even if it doesn't agree with you?

Come on Claude, you know new evidence only matters if it backs up preconceived beliefs.

This is a great example of how many human brains create an opinion, then look at only the "facts" to support their opinion. And if the facts don't match their opinion, attack the facts.

I think the best we can hope for is that they say they found that 4 billion years ago, Mars had a magnetic field and an oxygen rich atmosphere and was to all intents and purposes an Earth like planet, more than capable of supporting life.

That would be huge in itself. Religion definitely would not like it.

                                      We'll know shortly.

But yeah, it's possible (but I don't know how possible) that at one time, Mars, Earth, and Venus had running water, an atmosphere....and maybe early microbial life.

But even the idea that two planets had life at one time, greatly modifies what we would think of the proliferation of life in the galaxy.

I was under the impression from what I've read from NASA, that Mars has no plate tectonics - which might not determine magnetism, but from what they know right now, tectonics do determine atmosphere. Without the ground movement there's no replenishment of atmosphere.

Claude - they already know there was running water (and there's still small amounts of moving water seasonally). There's a lake bed they found that they believe holds fossils. I'd rather hear about that right now than more rehash over the composition of the atmosphere. This is the same ruse as last time - announce what is already known.

So they never read anything on geology or paleo-geology? Like I just said - lack of plate tectonics will cause the atmosphere to thin because it's the action of earth movement that kicks more gas into the air. Plant life dying off would account for the thinning of a few gases (oxygen for 1), but for that to be relevant - they have to find some of those fossils they think are in that lake bed.

So basically they just did what I expected -- "announced" news arleady extant in their reports - and wonder about it a little bit? Great. I'm going to cut out of here and go see what the hell our politicians are doing today. I am getting a little ticked at these effete diversions.

They announced the timetable for when the atmosphere left Mars, and what is causing it. It thinned abut 4 billion years ago, taking the surface water with it.

Not a huge revelation, but at least it's real.

I watched an interesting documentary last night on NOVA where they said a mountain range the size of the Rockies once existed in North America.

This is a great example of how many human brains create an opinion, then look at only the "facts" to support their opinion. And if the facts don't match their opinion, attack the facts.
True, the silly notion l had years ago, about Mars having running water, was a good example!

Everyone was watching for their announcement last time - which turned out to be nothing they haven't posted on their site before..............while political crap we should have been paying attention to went down.

NASA already has the percentages of what gases and the thickness of the atmosphere in their reports online. So what's going on this time?

Without the ground movement there's no replenishment of atmosphere.

Claude - they already know there was running water (and there's still small amounts of moving water seasonally). There's a lake bed they found that they believe holds fossils. I'd rather hear about that right now than more rehash over the composition of the atmosphere. This is the same ruse as last time - announce what is already known.
Yes, Sal, Mars has no plate tectonics, but it does have a magnetic field, only not like ours.

Earths is uniform, Mars is distorted, but it is there!

No, l will admit when l am wrong, l certainly thought that NASA was going to be more forthright this time, but obviously not!

True, that l want to find the truth, and get annoying at individuals that cannot weight all the evidence.

Follow the herd, it might be comforting and convenient but is it true?

How many times have the powers that be, lied to us, don't know about the US, but in AU, it is becoming an art form!

I don't have the time for all of that Whatev, but this guy has the same questions?

As l said, l won't believe in something if it is full of holes!

Here is a direct quote from a paper [3] written about the atmospheric pressure as measured by the Viking Landers:

"The day to day atmospheric pressure variability, low in summer and higher in fall and winter, (especially at the northern site), is due to weather "fronts" quite similar to those on Earth Along with the annual cycle, meteorological fronts are indicated by the increasing variability of the pressure between fall and spring at these northern hemisphere sites as previously mentioned. The Lander 2, VL2, site is similar in latitude to Seattle, Paris or Vienna, while the southern, VL1 site, like Pathfinder, is similar in latitude to Hong Kong, Havana or Calcutta. Like on Earth, the frontal activity is less in the tropics and sub-tropics, e.g., the VL1 site. Typically, the fronts pass every few sols (mars days) on Mars, often resembling those of Earth except for the lack of rain, while at other times, they are far more regular."

Note the author's statement above, that planet has weather fronts like that of earth, except it doesn't rain. But a 1% atmosphere which is essentially a vacuum - having weather? How can the planet have weather without an atmosphere?

NASA Set To Make Huge Announcement On Thursday Regarding Mars' Atmosphere | IFLScience

    This is not a joke.

If they come out saying that they now have evidence that there is an atmosphere like Earth, I'm going to be the first to tell Shane that he's right.

It may kill me, but I'll do it.
Well, I'm holding my breath (just in case)

The article possibly indicates findings regarding what it was like and how it was lost. However, due to cuts in NASA funding, if they were holding back information (for whatever reason) regarding it's suitability for habitation atmosphere wise then it's never been a better time to reveal it. Keep the punters interested.

Added: Interesting, all of a sudden (after years of nothing much) we get an admission about water, then barely a month later, a major announcement about the atmosphere. Preparation and conditioning the public for something? (said the conspiracy theorist)

More likely that the evidence has recently become overwhelming.

Before scientists reveal something that changes our perceptions, they want to be sure...and then they want to be very sure. Because being proven wrong, tanks a scientist's career.

Yeah, maybe something that makes a manned mission to Mars more plausible, or something that we need to study, that makes a manned mission necessary.

      I guess we'll know tomorrow.

Why is NASA making announcements that they are going to make announcements? Everyone was watching for their announcement last time - which turned out to be nothing they haven't posted on their site before..............while political crap we should have been paying attention to went down.

NASA already has the percentages of what gases and the thickness of the atmosphere in their reports online. So what's going on this time?

The news is when the atmosphere was blown off by solar radiation. It was also how the atmosphere was taken. I didn't think it was a major announcement, but it was additional information.

Maybe because NASA isn't the only one who can actually get to mars nowadays and they
    don't want another "race"

We know it's got to be littered with vast amounts of gold and other precious ore.

No, logic, not directly but the BS goes much deeper than that! Remember the military owns NASA. And the military obviously keeps secrets. They certainly don't want some crackpot regime finding a way to flatten a city, without having to nuke it, or gain a substantial military advantage!

This is interesting, and it sounds very familiar!

If We Discover Aliens, What's Our Protocol for Making Contact? | Alien Life & UFOs

According to Robert Freitas, author of several books outlining possible alien contact scenarios, in 1950 the U.S. military developed a procedure called "Seven Steps to Contact," laying out the logical steps we would take upon discovering creatures with roughly human-level sentience. According to the steps, we would begin with remote surveillance and data gathering, and would eventually move on to covert visitations with the goal of gauging the performance characteristics of the aliens' vehicles and weaponry.

If we judged our technological capabilities to be superior to those of the other race, we would attempt near approaches to the planet to determine whether the alien beings were hostile, and if so, by what means. If all went well, we would then make brief touchdowns in isolated areas, securing specimens of plants, animals, and of the intelligent beings themselves. In other words, this phase would involve non-harmful abductions similar to those reported by some Americans.

(Interestingly, the "Seven Steps to Contact" plan predated the first reported alien abduction incident in 1957, suggesting the theory could have influenced such reports.) [Alien Abductions May Be Vivid Dreams, Study Finds]
Next, we would make our presence known, making low-level approaches where our craft and its operators could be seen, but not reached. We would try to be witnessed by the greatest possible number of inhabitants, and would demonstrate our existence and our nonhostile nature. Lastly, if all went well and there was no reason to think that contact would be disastrous for the two races involved, we would land and attempt to communicate face-to-alien-face.
Sounds like what we are going through, only a matter of time!

There is also a 1957 report, (couldn't find it) showing that society would go nuts if told that aliens exist, or are on Mars!

      That is the other reason!

Not much point in getting more funding by showing a video of a martian cockroach having a drink, then huge amounts of money is needed keeping a large part of society from going on a rampage.

Although with them flying about for so long, it is unlikely now, we would spit the dummy, so to speak!

Yes, l will agree with you there it is self defeating and dumb, but the military is behind it so?

Solar panels on Spirit should be destroyed at -40, and it is supposed to go down to -178 at night!

My brother suffered from serious Schizophrenia. It wasn't funny, and I never teased him.
But the things he said wouldn't be out of place in some of these threads.

He thought the people on TV were talking to him, and threatening him. He thought there were people living in the walls, plotting against him. Is that so different from some of what we read in the OT forum, on a regular basis?

            Just a question.
Very few of us, have the qualifications to diagnose something like that. For those that do, probably not wise to try and make that diagnosis with nothing but forum posts to go off of.

So here's the dilemma: treat all such posts as signs of mental illness (at the risk of offending someone by handling with the care that goes with that) or have fun with it (at the risk of angering or triggering someone who has a much more serious problem).

That's the fun of mental illness. Never seems to be a good answer.

I deleted my post, because I thought it may have offended someone. But please notice that I never delete a post where I am insulting you. The reason, I want to insult you.....and everyone here backs me up when I insult you.

Even the Mods put a hit out on you..

My wife hates you, and she has never met you.

The stray black cat behind the store...told me that he hates you. I've never heard a cat curse before.

By the way, "Kurt" is Martian for Rancid Yogurt. Somehow it fits.

I think that's because you came from a parallel universe. Well, almost parallel.

It really is a pity that one of Claude's posts in this thread about "closed loop arguments" was deleted. Now that truly was common sense and logic.

It brought to mind Bertrand Russell's Paradox of Fools and Wise Men:
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are so certain of themselves and wiser people are so full of doubts.

That would have been before the Edward Snowden allegations, I assume. Because, it is kind of true nowadays, if not exactly as he described.

But that wasn't the illness. The illness was that no amount of evidence or logic could enter his fantasy. It took me years, before I finally realized that there was no way to help him.

That is sad. I had a friend like that and I was featured in his delusions as the head of an Intelligence operation to persecute him. I disassociated with him after he made a comment that a knife could go through the back of a car chair if he tried to stab me. I think it is fair to add that most people with schizophrenia are not dangerous.

That is certainly fair. I visited my brother in the hospital, and the others were not dangerous at all. But he was. When I went though a divorce, he offered to kill my wife. He was arrested several times for starting fights.

When people are delusional, that doesn't make them dangerous, unless you are dangerous to them in their delusion. And unfortunately, my brother had those kind of delusions. Everyone was a threat to him. He was unpredictable. None of it was funny.

  • Guess the deal with mental illness is Who Cares?

I've known crazy people who have no problem at all with how they are. But they are such a danger to themselves or other people they gotta be locked up.

Flipside, there's guys with srsly sh*t all wrong with 'em who are so convinced they are ill or mad they suffer for it. They go lookin' for problems don't exist, oblivious to the luxury of their own sanity.

Guess the deal is, if u think there's sumthin' wrong, then ur prolly ok. An' if ur not, you can go get help.

Problem is when ur super OK. Nuthin's wrong an' u don't care.

Thing is, we all have shades of times where we are borderline sumthin' or other, an' u all prolly figured mine out early on.

We swing an' sway, an' keep tabs on ourselves.

The illness is when we sway too far an' either feel it too much, or not at all.

[Jus' addin' in that by 'Who Cares' I do not mean to be dismissive. I am' thinkin' on the nature of the carin' done by the Whomsoever.]

And now, back to Mars, where the first incarceration chambers are being installed alongside the anti-grav flumes and polymammary poledancing bars...
