Just a thank you.

A few quotes
On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free. Dan Lipinski

The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other ******* die for his. George Patton

The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of early wars were treated and appreciated by our nation. George Washington

        Hi.

I missed this post, yesterday - so TYVM.

On Monday my VA shrink called to inform me that after 45 years of PTSD therapy, the last 14 years with her, that she is cutting me loose. She says it's a good thing - - - that I have rendered her place in my life as 'unnecessary.'

She also told me that if someone would have told her a year ago, that I would have been the next vet that she considered safe to let go, that she would have pee'd her pants from laughing so hard.

It's true. My 'piss and vinegar' has been transformed into honeysuckle nectar. I am the sweetest thing on two legs. lol

The things that used to drive me berserk no longer affect me. I barely acknowledge their existence.

There are three things that I contribute to my improved mental state.

        1. Just passing the 2 year mark of not smoking pot after 50 years of doing so.

        2. Elimination of all personal dept outside of my modest mortgage payment.

        3. Hours-long rides in my beautiful, purring BMW convertible, the purchase of which was the smartest and most enjoyable thing I have done in the past 10 years. Cruising the back roads of S. Jersey with the sun beating on my face is the ultimate form of therapy. It will cure whatever ails you. I can't wait for spring. lol

To all of my fellow vets, a belated, "Welcome home."

        Cheers. - Frank

That's awesome, Frank! Honestly, one of the most personally rewarding things for a therapist is to be able to say to a client, "You don't need me any more".

Glad you are doing so well!

As for the "honeysuckle nectar"... still a tad delusional, lol!

Hi. That's what she tried to explain. My first reaction was a feeling of rejection and abandonment, but after giving it some thought, I realize that I am doing well. Additionally, I will be fine knowing that I am giving up my slot to a veteran who may need it much more than I do.
Glad you are doing so well!
Thanks. So am I. I feel a weird sense of pride, I think mainly for sticking with it for all those decades. I would have never have survived without it.

            Ah, well - nobody's perfect. :-)

Those feelings are very common. It's an issue that therapists should always take into serious consideration when terminating a client. Sometimes a few sessions to address those very feelings are necessary (as part of the termination process), depending on the client, to help them get through the transition smoothly and without incident, and to ensure proper closure.

It's great (and another indicator of how well you're doing) that you were able to put it in perspective, and especially regard the end of your therapy as a slot opening up for another vet!

After I explained that entering the holiday season always adds additional stress, she said it was best if we made my last session be in December. I had already gone from once a week, to twice a month, to once a month over the past yearso I have been weaned-off. She also was very clear in letting me know that she was never more than a phone call away and that she would always take my call. Can't ask for much more than that.

I was lying in bed last night, thinking about this when I realized that I left out the most important thing that started me back on the path to psychological stability. That was rescuing Honey a year and a half ago. She has been the joy of my life and the center of my universe. She certainly deserves mention. :-)
