Fascinating research since 1970s

Also, the statistics regarding floor space and friends is very troubling. People prefer stuff over relationships. It's a fixation issue and instead of focusing on relationships, we focus on stuff and addictions are one of the effects.

What are your thoughts?

First, the premise and title - "everything we think we know about addiction is wrong" is laughable and completely inaccurate.

Second, this concept - "The opposite of addiction is human connection" - is also overly simplistic and addresses only one of many risk factors for (and potential causes of) addiction.

While people who are socially disconnected for any number of reasons do have a greater risk for drug addiction than those with a healthy social support network, those in the latter group are certainly not invulnerable to drug addiction.

Nicotine addiction is a perfect example of why the premise of this video is flawed. People who have strong social connections become addicted to nicotine all the time, and have been doing so for decades.

Also, some people who are treated with opioids for medical reasons do become very addicted to them, in spite of strong social connections and no prior history of addiction.

I do agree that some of the ways addiction is addressed and addicts are treated in society are detrimental, and inadvertently fuel the problem in some, if not many, cases.

But this video grossly over-simplifies the cause of addiction, which is a complex problem that almost always stems from multiple causal factors. There are some nuggets of truth in it, but they're definitely nothing new.

Being "in recovery" from addiction for around 25 years now and having many recovering friends, I can tell you that video is load of poop.

Addicts come from all walks of life, from celebrities, to the wealthiest, to the poor, lonely, socially disconnected people the video are talking about. They come from excellent homes with large support systems in place and many friends and relatives, to those with no one to turn to.

The fact is, addiction is a bio/psycho/social disease with physiological, sociological and psychological elements. It is complex ... not a single simple cause as the video would suggest. There is also genetic predisposition to addiction that you have to factor in.

So .. in summary ... poppycock.

It should be re-titled "Everything In This Video About Addiction Is Wrong".
