Hey all, I am a producer and I make EDM. My music is more of a bass house style now but I can do all genres of EDM.

Anyone else here play with music?

Let's see now, takes backing track drums and loops. Repetitive chord sequences and improvises a bit over the top with lead instruments. Not very musical or memorable but good as perhaps pieces to use in video animations, games and perhaps appropriate film scores as it evokes mood, spaciness and atmosphere.

Still, tell him, as I think it is appropriate to what he is doing and not meant as to be taken as an insult. Material like that really is for mood, emotion and atmosphere, dance etc. .

I used to be a drummer in the seventies and played with Gary Numan's bass player in the eighties and when the Amiga computer came out I jumped on using it with a computer music tracker program and a Yamaha Synth. I did an hours worth of 16 track New Age meditation/relaxation music.

I could not play a keyboard but was able to find the notes and chords and insert them into the tracker on the screen for playback, so I built up layers of different sounds and accompaniments manually, step time input, like using a word processor. Now of course you have pre-done samples and sequences which you can drag and drop so the process is a lot faster.

I made up cassettes of it and sold several hundred. One guy who worked at an autistic children's center told me he was using the music to focus the children's attention.

Thing is, I found I was not creating just repetitive sequences but more pieces that had lots of chops and changes and complete melodic sequences. Quite complex but done with synthetic synth sounds. My mindset was that why was it not possible to create orchestral, melody driven type music using synth sounds. To create something new.

If you go to You-Tube, look up Snowflakes are Dancing by Tomita. This was some works by Debussy. Re-imagined on synth's. Superb, visionary some of it.

That's the sort of stuff I would like to aspire too. No one has tried to do this with the exception of John Michelle Jarre's early work which had some leanings in that direction.(and perhaps a few others like Mike Oldfield, Vangellis) Memorable, instrumental musical creation using modern soundscapes.

Sadly, nothing remains of my musical forays in the eighties to point you too as I could not transpose the files to the PC. All in my head though. Perhaps I shall recreate it, add to it. My wife can write amazingly good songs and I do backing tracks to them.

I suspect this family member is young and has grasped the use of pre-done samples which allow you to create pieces fairly quickly. Dance and chill instrumental stuff are fairly easy to create with them.

PS. Julliett's Javelin is the best out of the five

I had Gajits sequencer for the Atari, along with a Roland D5 and an Alesis SR16. This was about 25 years ago when MIDI was a newborn. Thems were the days...

                What was the Amiga prog?

                  Octamed or Med.

It still exists today for the PC. Called Med Soundstudio.

Unfortunately the girl that sings this song is traveling the world, so I have no idea when we will be able record it in the studio. Probably have to start looking for another singer.
That was quite good, keep at it.

I have a client who's asking me for various small vocal clips to be processed and used in EDM. On the one hand, I'm scratching my head, (as I'd previously never even heard of the genre). On the other hand, getting paid twice for the same recording... score!! e.g., I just got permission from the owner of this commercial that I'd recorded a few months ago to allow it to be sliced up and repurposed as music vocals:

EDM took a turn for the worse after Robert Sillerman & SFX Entertainment bought up over 1 billion in rights to all of the worlds largest EDM festivals - national promoters - clubs - beatport - edm pr agencies - ID&T - you name it...

I made a post a few years ago on my personal blog predicting how this would turn out and low and behold the billionaire former clear channel/live nation owner tanked the company in less than 2 years - screwing over thousands of stock investors in the process -- i hope for the sake of EDM culture in general, that this clown can get out of the industry and things can return to a more 'EDM' atmosphere
