I seriously doubt that engagement rings will "bite the dust" just because some marketing "gooorooo" says so.

I'll take diamonds for each finger and toe, neck, wrist, ankles, nipples/(other unmentioned places), ears, nose please.

I hate to introduce logic into such an emotionally charged topic, (especially when it somehow veered off so as to include discussion of nipples), but I had to speak up when I saw this line.

Consider here for a moment that the man is asking you to marry him, at which point, his assets become your assets and vice versa. If he spends all this money beforehand, said assets will be corresponding lower upon marriage. My point is that, yes, it is your cash... very directly so.

I guess I feel so strongly about this because so many couples run into so much difficulty over money, (and yes, this definitely included me and my ex). People fall in love, and somehow the Disney/De Beers wedding mindset kicks in, throwing all reason to the wind. (And of course there's a whole industry in place that's more than ready to help part you with your money.) Marriage should be about taking another step towards Adulthood; what's so wrong about some frank financial discussions?

I think my daughter, 26, took the right approach, or at least the least expensive one, when she txt'ed me: "Oh, btw, I got married 4 years ago; lol gtg c u bi!"

Hey, Dave -- you raise some valid points here, and the iceberg of your principled (heartfelt) logic greets my flippant & loudmouthed Titanic with commendably necessary stability.

I'm grateful to you for sharing thoughts you've clearly spent time and care nurturing, particularly as you voiced 'em in response to a comment blessed merely with impulsive recklessness when you maybe had other things to do.

That said (and I hope I don't risk losing you here, Dave) -- the nipples still stand.

You're right about the wedding industry's ability to part people from their cash, just as Jason is right to point up the abundant mechanisms available for generating such partings, but I figure funerals are a big dollar sink also, an' I gotta plan for mine when I prompt someone from the other side of the hooman good/evil spectrum as yourself to come have a quiet word with me.

In the absence of Mr Right, pitching exotic matrimonial jewelry ideas to debeers might just be the thing to save me.

Meantime, good on your daughter for her honest approach (even though I got trouble followin' the weirdo spellin' at the end there.)

I already did my bit for economically challenged men of the world. The first couple of "not really death do us parts" were financially challenged.

The next one, if there will be a next one, will be filthy rich and the price of a mere jewelry box full of diamonds won't even make him blink.

Can this day get any better!? Princess just asked me out on a date!! Wow... I think I might just faint!

And yes, the death industry is another huge institution ready to consume us consumers, but I've found that it's actually much easier to put the brakes on there. My partner, 73, and I are friends with her funeral director, and the FD honestly respects that "no" means "no". No funeral, no hearse, no burial plot. Cremate her body, and no fancy urn; she likes that adorable plain cardboard box for $4.99, please. (Could even skip that, since I'm going to sprinkle her ashes anyway, but technically that's illegal, so we hafta maintain the facade, and quietly recycle the box later.)

Actually, speaking of funerals, since you've proven that you can write, one idea that I've never seen tossed around here is writing pre-need obituaries. It's a huge, mostly untapped market. You could even go meta, and write the WSO.

The Death Industry: if you can't beat 'em, you might as well join 'em!

I was going to post a pic response, but I'm not actively trying to get banned.

                      Fun story:

I had a door-to-door salesgirl come to my door, she was maybe 22 or 23.
Dressed very nice, very well-spoke, very intelligent.
I asked her why she chose her current profession, she broke-down and
said she had a "diamond addiction". She spends all of her money on diamonds,
it's really gotten out of control and was hurting the rest of her life.

I've always felt bad that I never took her seriously, just saying that there
                      are worse addictions to have!

Of course! This is the Internet, after all! But my partner and I are pretty darn flexible, and we like confusing the neighbors! (The local police, not so much, but they still have to let us go when they realize that there aren't actually any charges to press.)

        hypothetically...

If your bf can afford $20k... how much would you choose to:

        spend on a ring: __________

        spend on the wedding: ___________

invest* as downpayment on a house: _______________

NOTE: Every dollar down secures $5 of mortgage, so $20k secures a $100k house, $10k gets a $50k house, $5k gets a $25k house, and $0 keeps you renting. And it's invested because it remains as equity in the house. If you later sell the house, that equity gets returned to the extent that the house isn't worth less than you paid, and you didn't borrow the equity and spend it in the mean time.

OR... would you rather if he just showed up with a $20k ring?

De Beers is the marketing guru. Adam Conover is a comedian that hosts a pretty good new show called "Adam Ruins Everything", where he takes on some myths and untruths using facts (and his own opinions) in a funny way.

He also had an excellent show on "democracy" in America that's worth watching.

Caught his show for the first time while flipping the channels the other night. Very entertaining. I set my DVR to record past and future episodes.

He's right about diamonds. Though they may be nice to look at, 99% of them are virtually worthless in the grand scheme of things.

I like his show too...A good mix of facts and entertainment.

On the TV show about diamonds there was another point that the video in the OP didn't have...The show brought up how a researcher bought a diamond for $6000, then the very next day took it to some jewelry shops to try to sell it. The highest price he was offered was under $1000.

The diamond basically lost 5/6ths of its value in less than a day. Probably not the best investment there is.

This is not a "guru" secret. A simple silver band was good enough in Germany a hundred years ago. I'm pretty sure I first read about it in Barbara Tuchman's The Proud Tower over 20 years ago. So this dude did not discover the idea for the first time a moment ago.

Yes, de Beers built the idea of needing a diamond ring.

Yes, most people have accepted this idea blindly.

The takeaway should be that you can, with the right message and marketing budget, build demand for just about anything.

Also: "Day-um" Eve is ugly in that painting above. Betcha the artist was using another man as the model.

Well don't the guys just love to protest those beautiful baubbles?

For me? I LOVE gemstones. Will be very happy to hunt my own - just get me where I have to go for them........because I don't want white.........I want a pink or red, maybe a blue diamond. Get me to them and I'll get my own stone. All he has to do have it faceted and set as fits my whimsy.

Too bad that guys hate the tradition so much, because, frankly - that diamond is about the most value a lot of women ever see out of a man. We're not giving up some bling that's usually the last bling we'll ever see once it's anchored on our fingers.

And never forget that when the woman is done with the guy she got it from, she can just crush it and put it in his mashed potatoes. Diamond poisoning isn't actually poison - it's that mohs scale 10 hard rock puncturing little holes in your stomach and intestines so you bleed out.

      That's a rather sad perspective.

      And that's downright frightening.

The point is, IT'S NOT A TRADITION! It's a marketing myth made up by De Beers, brainwashing the gullible that a diamond means "love". It doesn't mean a thing. And your post is exactly why a guy should never buy a woman a diamond.

Just remember, diamonds are a girl's best friend, but dogs are man's best friend. Keep your shiny little rocks. I know which I prefer.

And if your thoughts are about puncturing holes in the stomachs of men, go get help. Seriously.

^ If that diamond was all the value a man was obligated to give, I don't think there'd be all those protests. Maybe not any of them in fact. At least then he'd know what the damage is up front, rather than have the lawyers explaining it to him after the fact.

Yeah - caught the point. Just having some fun with it.

And, actually - while someone "just made it up" - it has become a tradition. All traditions were just "made up" at one time or another. It's not how stuff comes about that makes it tradition - it's becoming ingrained in the culture and seen as a normal way of doing things that makes it a tradition. A lot of our most valued traditions did not start the way the story handed down over the centuries tells us. At all.

Diamonds have become a part of our marriage rituals - no matter how gifting them started.

      Thank f*ck we got Santa.

In a world overflowin' with mutatin' narrative, that guy offers salvation.

Gotta hope he don't get storied out in the unfoldin' millennium or zillions of kids gonna miss out on sumthin' special.

I love Santa, an' I saw him once, tellya.

His beard was all white an' angelic like he had an uplit arctic fox lashed to his face.

I tried to touch it but he snuck outta my room real fast.

Raced to the window to watch him fly into the stars but he musta gone the other way — unless he got a cloakin' device on his sleigh nowadays.

Gotta tellya, I was real happysad.

I sat on the end of my bed fulla excitement an' longin', clutchin' my bear to my heart an' wishin' happy thoughts.

It was my favo moment of 2014.
