At the cafe they were greeted by waitress Liz Woodward. She overheard the firemen discuss their last exhausting 12 hours. When the two asked for the bill, they received this rather different kind of paper...

The firefighters were both so touched that they had difficulty holding back the tears.
...

The story could end here, but it gets better.

Had to drive in the car yesterday, and one radio station is playing all xmas songs non stop. I wanted to rip the radio out of the dashboard and throw it.

THAT is the kind of stuff thanksgiving is supposed to be about! It is nice seeing nice people help nice people even though they themselves are struggling, only to get a lot of their problems taken care of. I'm sure the $80K can go a long way to help the situation. I would have loved to see the look on her face when she found that so much had been taken care of.

The US minimum wage for a waitress is $2.13 per hour.

Yeah, that is IDIOTIC! I am pretty sure that when there were *****TIPS*****, the minimum wage was for EVERYONE! THEN at some point some moron figured tips didn't exist, and that what were called tips should be payment for bringing something to the table, or listening. It was likely at that point that the government came in and said THEY wanted tax!

And NOW, there are some cultures that think that Americans ALWAYS did this, and can't understand tips.

It USED to be, apparently in the early 1990s, from what I heard, that waitresses got paid a decent wage, and tips were NON REPORTED payments that were for doing a good job. They weren't just paid for listening or bringing something to the table.

A lot or restaurants also make the wait staff put all their tips in a jar and when the shift is over they split the money up between all the wait staff. So a person could be horrible at waiting tables but still make the same money as the best waiter/waitress in the same restaurant.
