If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it still make a sound?

If you are great at what you do, but nobody knows, are you an expert?

  • How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?

Any other questions you would like answering?

    • You beat me to it.

      Yes, there is a sound.
      Yes, you are an expert.

      Here's a question for you.

If suddenly, every person on the planet could fly like Superman, would it still be a super power?

      Here's a question I actually thought of;

if an alien space ship landed, and they told you that they would take you with them, to show you the galaxy, and to learn from them....but you couldn't tell anyone, not even your wife...you would just instantly be gone....would you do it?

  • 1) Yes

    2) I would not hire an unproven expert for my car repair, or anything else. Hmmm.
  • 1) Yes. Unless it's a Quantum tree which, of course, only makes a noise when someone is listening.

    2) Depends. If you're the only one who thinks you're great, you could be just self-delusional.

  • 1. Define "sound".

    2. Yes.

  • You see what happens to a good main forum post that get placed
in the Off Topic section by a moderator? The question is about
the importance of advertising, but now it comes to this section
and everyone thinks it's an off question.

This couldn't have happened on a worst day, today being my
    birthday.

    • Your birthday is your worst day?
All the more reason to wish you a happy birthday I guess.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • Is it a birthday if no-one knows it's your birthday?

      PS Happy birthday.

  • Happy Birthday, Ray.

  • 1. Yes. The creation of sound waves are not dependent on our perceptions.

    2. Yes they are. They are just really broke experts.

  • I will try to be serious here.

    About the original sound.

The trick in the question is that a sound is not a sound unless it can be heard. No one hears the tree, so there is no sound.

But the real question is about what the tree makes, ears or no, an' what it will always make is the energy of the sound wave.

But that won't blow out candles unless it is way loud.

So no one wins, except mebbe the tree.

    • Precisely, which is why I asked for an operating definition of "sound."

This ol' chestnut has never been an argument of science, but instead, one of semantics.
