Free'ing up computer space

Googled it, and got programmer freaks talking like Spock or sounding like a multi-binary Euclidian equation, or stuff that did not work as explained.

When I tried to move "My Documents" to DVD-R, it was either said there was an error encountered or that " extra attached files may be lost in data stream", something or the other.

But when I was ready to move it Local drive (c) or 3.5 floppy drive (a) , it was ready and willing , but not to (d).

Can someone explain to me in pre-school english what I can do and/or why it cannot be done?

I am technology challenged......., I am relaying this typed message thru a "jimmied" 1897 Navy auxiliary hand sending telegraph key.

I am also going to finally up grade my rotary phone to this hands free device, in an attempted effort to catch up to , at least, the 20th century, then I'll only be one century off:

Hey, thanks ahead of time, to all attempts and contributors here.

You burn files to a DVD-R not move them. See if your d: drive is a burner and you have the software to burn with.

You can actually save a lot of space by conducting a system defrag for your hard drive. Another method of getting some free space available is deleting old shadow copies of your system restore saves if you are running a windoes operating system. I did this recently and was surprised to get an extra 1 gig out of my hard drive

I have a mac, and I go through the cache and delete temporary internet files, and remove the "ghost" files of others things I've deleted. I've been shocked to find triplicate copies! Amazing! also, those files that are "drafts", updates, and burning want to keep files onto DVD.

13th - I just did that and cleaned out over a gig of space.
Just turn restore off - delete files (I just right clicked over the program icon if I remember rightly) - it takes awhile because there's usually a lot of old files.
Then turn your restore on long enough to make a copy of the current system, then
turn it off again so you have a restore point but aren't adding to the files daily.
If I left anything out, it won't be something that will cause melt down LOL.

BTW - your user name from the movie? I loved that movie.

Go to your system restore settings Programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore, turn off system restore, delete all the RPxxx folders, and you may or may not want to turn on system restore again. Or you could alter the space being occupied by system restore using the slider in the system restore dialog.
Ah thanks - I knew I missed something out of that mix. I was hoping he'd figure it out when he got there. I did and I'm a complete idiot when technology is involved.

I'm a walking still born with a detached brain stem when it comes to technology, probably would not have figured it out, without a flowchart.

So an idiot may be about 6.457 levels above me in technology.

Was at a internet cafe once, playing some game, then along came some 5 or 6 year old kid who was so small, he had to sit in the chair next to me on his knees.

He started tapping away, what looked like at least 25 words per minute, going to websites and tools I never seen or known about, splittin screens and doing stuff,....felt like a neanderthal chimp next to this kid....., all I could picture was an x-ray of my skull with a puddle of day old oatmeal for brains...,LOL, yikes!

Kids going to be my future healthcare insurance adjuster, or banker denying me credit.

Just don't see how one can keep up, or get it, because once you do, it's obsolete, if you don't "get it " fast enough.

Thought I was on a roll when I formatted and copied my 1st 5.25 floppy.

I think what makes it difficult is the endless and various products, tweaks and upgrades for just ONE product whether its a disk, motherboard, monitors and their attachments, software and their subcategories, various types of storage devices and options, just too much stuff.

I know how that feels, 13W. In 2004 I got my first computer and I actually felt smart being able to master getting online and surfing - turns out I was smart in a luck sort of fashion because only a few weeks later I stumbled on the WF and figured out how to make a post. LOL. Every button I learned how to click for the first two years is because of the partners and pals I acquired here. Now I can take off with a few things on my own and am lightyears ahead of where I started.....but every time I get into the main forum I realize that there is more to learn than I even know there is to learn. This stuff is a continual mix of emotions - success filled feelings and feelings of inadequacy all wrapped up in the same paper and ribbons. LOL.
