SNL has been on TV for more than 30 years and has had tons of cast members...

Who's your favorite(s)?

Mine are John Belushi and Eddie Murphy.

I still think Chevy Chase was the not only the original, but the best doing the news. Dennis Miller was great with the news too.

    Belushi and Murphy for sure.

    I liked Murray, Akryoid.

But my favorite was probably Gilda Radner (Classic characters: Roseanne RosannaDanna, Baba Wawa)

My favorite character (not counting the Blues Brothers) was probably Eddie Murphy's Buckwheat. He also did a great James Brown.

I hate to admit it, but I also liked Joe Piscapo's sports guy.

Kurt, you ignorant sl*t. I'm thinking something like Molly Shannon doing her "Sally O'Malley... and I'm 50!" skits. But I'm sure more will spring to mind. There were so many great actors (who played so many memorable characters).

ETA: I'm editing this long after I posted it, because I figure some non-SNL fans might just look at the first line of my post and think I'm mean. For non-SNL'ers, that's a line from the show during the days of Jane Curtain and Dan Akroyd.

Is Saturday night the only night that a guy can have a live member.........what? Oh....
    .................................................. ...........................

    NEVER MIND.

Gilda was hilarious. But that whole first cast put me on the floor gaffawing so it's hard to say.

The original cast gets a most emphatic vote.

Phil Hartman was probably the best of anything after the original "Not Ready for Prime Time Players". I liked Chris Farley, too.

There have been other cast members who I think were better when they weren't actually on the show. All the members of Spinal Tap, for example.

TRIVIA: Why, specifically, did they start saying, "Live! From New York, it's Saturday Night" as opposed to, "...it's Saturday Night Live"?

    All the bset,
    Michael

p.s. For the most solid cast of a comedy sketch show, it would have to be SCTV.

    See Eugene Levy in action...

I'll guess because Howard Cossell also had a show called "Saturday Night Live"?

While Second City had a good cast, I don't think it holds up to SNL over all the years.

Trivia: What song, by what artist, was the inspiration for a skit that evolved into the Blues Brothers?

Guessing here: I'm A King Bee written by Slim Harper?

I had heard once that the skit where they danced around in Bee costumes was the inspiration for the Blues Brothers...

OOOh hands down Tina Fey! Everytime she comes up with those crazy skits I end up laughing my tush off! I can still remember her Sarah Palin impersonations! They still crack me up everytime i watch them on reruns or clips off youtube. It's sad that she does her own thing now, well her sitcom is kind of funny anyway.

Ding! Ding! Ding! You are correct, Kurt.

John Candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dave Thomas, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, and Andrea Martin were pretty good. But they were really a different type of show than SNL.

Both shows had their merits. SNL was more edgy, and SCTV was more quirky.

As to your trivia question: I had to look it up, so it's not fair for me to answer here. However, as soon as I saw the answer it made sense, and I remembered seeing the performance.

EDIT: Mike got the correct answer while I was typing this reply.

    All the best,
    Michael

Turns out that song was heavily covered. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry did a version in 2004. The Doors were said to have done it live frequently. Bonnie Raitt has done it too.

Nothing beats those old blues tunes...

Favourites from SNL, in no particular order:

    Will Ferrel
    Mike Myers
    Chris Farley
    Chris Rock
    Bill Murray
    Eddie Murphy

An honorable mention goes out to Andy Samberg who has a tonf of classic clips under his belt already.

Wow - Jane Curtain was part of the original cast and I've only seen one reference to her in here and it was just a quote -- what the heck ever happened to her?

Ferrell, Meadows, Hartman, Farley and Sandler were probably my 5 favorite.

Nobody remembers Meadows. He was on for a VERY long time and was quite hilarious. His OJ Simpson skits were awesome.
