...when deciding when or how to answer posts?

There have been several times where someone posts a request to, let's say, solve a website problem which I may know how to fix.

After answering though, I remember that this guy was the one asking about how to spam 1,000,000 people or this was the person that was rude, and disrespectful the last time I tried to help or this user is the one not giving promised refunds or whatever.

I'm torn on this a little bit and wanted your feedback.

1. I believe most people have helpful contributions they can make. Even newbies can help out if they speak from experience (not necessarily MMO).

2. I despise being associated with or helping scammers, rude people, etc. even by helping by answering a post.

3. I believe people can change - I have and am always trying to be better so I try to give the benefit of the doubt in most cases.

Even though I've thought about this a long time it came to a head this morning when I answered a post basically defending the OP's plan then I realized he was someone a week or so ago that made some errors. I believe he was spamming the forum with the name of a well known guru among other things. Do those past indiscretions make this post today totally worthless, sig whoring, spam?

Your thoughts?

Big picture, Mark. On a public forum, just as the OP doesn't get to own the thread, any replies given or discussions that might ensue are there for the benefit of all readers. If you think you have something useful to contribute, there's no reason to let your feelings for the OP stop you.

  • As a general rule, I do not.

I have witnessed resentment's yoke up close enough to know I don't want it in my life.

But I also do not like bein' taken for a ride.

It is a hubristic kinda selfishness, I guess, wantin' the best outta your time, but if ur gonna be a good person, how much is bloom, an' how much is sow?

While I'm figurin' alla this out, gonna pin this to my noteboard:

Mark, i've always seen your posts as being helpful and informative....

Being a certified sceptic and somewhat cynical my POV is that for the most part people don't change and that's why i would lean towards #2...
I would only answer to point out discrepancies or challenge the OP when ridiculous, fabricated statements are made....

Yeah it's great if you can give an answer that will benefit other people reading the thread but to me that only serves to add credibility to the OP...
There are far too many people who blindly accept everything they read as the honest truth, they don't bother questioning or researching and those are the people who get taken for a ride...

I have a rant today myself - I feel I was left out of the loop and I'm not happy.

Clearly, the WF is holding a 'stupid question of the day' contest in conjunction with an 'answer even if you have no idea what people are talking about here'....competition...

How can I win the prize if I don't know about the contest? There are about 3-4 people really pulling out ahead this morning....I don't know if I can catch up even if I try.

So ... today I wake up to find this contest is apparently a multi-day event. Geez...
