One of the questions that Tim Ferriss likes to ask on his podcast is

"What are some of your favorite documentaries? "

So, let me ask you if you would recommend a couple of your favorite documentaries?

One of my favorites, The Journey of Man.

The Bushmen of southern Africa are believed to be direct descendents of the first evolved Homo sapiens over 100,000 years ago. Geneticist Spencer Wells' research reveals that the genetic markers found in their DNA are unlike any others found outside of Africa.

JOURNEY OF MAN tells the remarkable story of the human journey out of Africa and into the rest of the world, tracing history through evidence uncovered in the Y-chromosome of mans DNA. Traversing six continents, the film takes viewers on a fascinating journey into the hidden world of their ancestry and offers a modern look at our ancestors lives.

Spoiler Alert: So, how did the human animal get to the Americas? They walked.

This is just excellent.

[Update:]

A favor please.

If you recommend a documentary, please add a brief description. A list of docs is not as enticing as what it is and why you like it.

Thanks,

Joe Mobley

Off the top of my head:

    Koyaanisqatsi
    Trail of Tears
Indian Warriors: The Untold Story of the Civil War
Code of Honor: Comanche Code Talkers of WW2
    Man on Wire
In the Shadow of the Moon
    The Invisible War
    Inside Job
    The War Game
    Paradise Lost
    The Times of Harvey Milk
    When We Were Kings
    Hearts and Minds
    The Thin Blue Line
Food, Inc. (WARNING: THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE YOU LOSE SERIOUS WEIGHT!)

Also probably 80% of TedTalks and some other more famous ones,
but I attempted to pick some of the great ones that will appeal to a wide audience,
but aren't talked about as much anymore?

Documentaries often tend to lean toward propaganda, which is unfortunate.
While I believe we must most certainly study the mistakes of our past so that we can
avoid them, and become more aware of our current horrible actions so that we can stop
them, in truth my favorite are the ones that ponder human potential and accomplishment.

My No. 1 favorite, hands-down is:

The King of Kong - a Fistful of Quarters

Summary: A middle-school science teacher and a hot sauce mogul vie for the Guinness World Record on the arcade classic, Donkey Kong.

      Metacritic: 83 (User Score 8.8)

In my opinion, you couldn't script a better plot, characters, or ending.

      My second favorite:

      His Way

Summary: Jerry Weintraub, the producer behind such films as Diner, The Karate Kid, and Ocean's Eleven, is profiled in this documentary supplemented with home videos and stories from various celebrities who have worked with him.

      Available on HBO Go.

Jerry Weintraub was a remarkable man, with many fantastically entertaining stories to tell. I can listen to him tell them over and over again.

Watched that on youtube last night, thanks for the recommendation. Kind of reminded me of the Prost and Senna rivalry in many ways.

Glad you liked it! Some great stories in it and that one studio band could really play some great funky music!

Here's one I watched last night. World War 2 from space. Takes you all the way through the war from a unique perspective. I learned a few things too.

Yeah, they were amazing, but even more amazing was how they would just gel with the artists. So much of that music seemed like it just wrote itself.

I actually met Clarence Carter many years ago. There's a restaurant chain in the Atlanta area that he would frequent (probably still does). He was a guest many times in at least two of the locations I was in. Quiet guy and always very nice. Always smiling.

I caught the tail end of that a few weeks back, I think on THC. Hope to see the entire thing sometime this week. THC and AHC have been all over the Hitler stuff for the past several weeks, which has been really interesting.

Glad Joe kicked off this thread. I'm a docu-junkie, and there's a few more here I'm looking forward to seeing.

A feature-length documentary that originally sought to follow the band and their fans throughout the world, to demonstrate how music ties us together when we can't find any other common bond. However, during the filming process in 2012, the story abruptly took a dramatic turn, bringing the band into a Kafkaesque nightmare, when lead singer Randy Blythe was arrested on charges of manslaughter, blamed for the death of one of their young fans in the Czech Republic. What followed was a heart-wrenching courtroom drama that left fans, friends, and curious onlookers around the world on the edge of their seats. --Rotten Tomatoes
Non-aficionados with no prior knowledge of the events depicted will be held in great suspense as the saga unfolds. But even if you already know how the case was resolved, As the Palaces Burn emerges as a gripping tale of a band whose existence was threatened by the very image they worked so hard to project.
    -HollywoodReporter.com
As the Palaces Burn’ is truly unique. The film’s honesty fuels the viewing experience, documenting the abandonment of its own original concept without bailing on the fans. No matter how much you’ve read about Randy Blythe’s Czech trial, ‘As the Palaces Burn’ offers a view never before experienced as Blythe extends his hand for a walk with him in Hell. -Loudwire

    "Exit through the gift shop."

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) - IMDb

The story of how an eccentric French shop-keeper and amateur film-maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world's most infamous graffiti artists at work.
