Scott Kelly is the brother of Astronaut Mark Kelly who is married to former congressperson Gabby Giffords.

Story and pics here...

Note: Most astronauts who go the space station come back after 180 days or so. Kelly and Kornienko are currently on day 309 -- and counting.

Thats quite the sacrifice they are making - a year in space could have some serious long term health effects

A little off topic, but a few months ago Mark Kelly was on a celebrity edition of Jeopardy. Also on the show was Mr. Wonderful Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank and QB Aaron Rodgers.

O'Leary has a talent to make money, but he's as dumb as a clam and finished in the hole. Kelly was OK. Aaron Rodgers kicked their butts and was far and away the best of the three.

Yes, but how many people get to spend a year in space?

At the bottom of that article was a blurb about going to mars and rocketing up from here.

I thought it had already been decided that a ship like that should just be built in space. Why are we not building it in space already? And why ever would people try to land it on mars? Just leave it in space and fly down in some smaller pods or something.

Yeah, it's not rocket science. Oh wait, it is. LOL

        Seriously, good ideas there, Jill.

I'd say we are not building it already because we might not have the capability - yet,
or budget, or support from the current admin. Or some combination thereof. (By
capability, I mean capability to build something like that in space, and capability to
        fly it that far.)

The smaller pods idea is also very good. Then they could build a more permanent structure,
        or drop a pre-made one.

There might be an issue with re-fueling for the ride back. I heard an aerospace expert -
Robert Zubrin I believe - suggest we would have to mine or use resources on Mars to re-fuel
for the return home. It might be a type of fusion or fission that we don't yet have perfected.

I've always wondered why anyone would want to spend any time in space. If I were to travel, it would be across this planet that I live on.

On the issue of sleeping in space, what about some light electromagnetic bed
and pajamas. Something to keep them on that Tempur-Pedic mattress.
