Name that film?

I asked this question at least 15 years back (I'm estimating), and possibly since (can't remember), in a few places online but it never got answered, or it got answered but not correctly. It's not a quiz question, just nobody was able to answer it.

Ok, about 30 years ago when I was a kid I remember seeing a film on TV. It was an American film (pretty sure as I remember baseball in one part of it), was in colour and I would hazard a guess it was either made in the 40's, 50's or 60's. I think it was probably set in the 40's, give or take a few years.

Details are very, very sketchy. All I remember was a young bloke, probably late teens, early 20's, had gone to baseball practice or a game. I seem to remember after the practice or game either he was driving home and came through a tunnel and crashed and died upon exiting the tunnel or a car came through the tunnel and crashed into and killed him. I think the car was red.

Literally the only other thing I remember, vaguely, was his mother at home (think she was washing up) and he could see her, although he was dead. I think at this point in the film she knew he was dead because she was upset and he couldn't comfort her. It was a good film.

The thing is I never saw the end of it because back then (around 1983/4/5) we didn't have a video and only the one TV and my mum wanted to watch bloody Coronation Street on the other side so turned it over. It bugs me every now and then and wondered if anybody recognised it? It's not Heaven can wait either.

  • Didn't find anything for yours :-/

I have one of these as well. A half-remembered artsy, moody romance from the 90s or early 2000s...could have been a movie, could have been a tv episode on Bravo or something similar...may have even been in French with subtitles. All I remember is through the film a secondary character was continuously working on turning a tank car into a submarine. At the end he succeeded, and dove. I think that may have paralleled the end of the romance. I remember a slightly brownish and glossy filter applied to the look.

Over the years I've asked here and there but nobody's remembered that one. And just wasted another hour tonight looking for it after yours w00t!

  • It was one of my favourite films. It WAS called "Heaven Can Wait" and starred Warren Beatty. His lightning quick athletic reactions in the tunnel meant he should have never been snatched from his body in the first place.

And, he was a baseball player, he was allowed by Mr Jordan, a heavenly in charge guy, to inhabit the body of a rich guy who was thrown down a well. The guy was due to die. He sets about getting to play again using his money and influence on the team, something like that. Not seen it for years.

If I'm wrong on this, and I think I'm not, then investigate some other films about this Mr Jordan character. They go back further in time. Perhaps a re-make using an old synopsis. I think though it is the film I'm describing and your memory is a bit muddled on it because it was a long time ago. The tunnel bit was highly familiar.

    • Sorry bout that. No, I don't know what your is either.

Please refer to my final sentence in the original post. I've scanned that film and it's definitely not that. Although that was a few years back so I may have to go over it again to make double sure.
    • Warren Beatty was a football QB in Heaven Can Wait, which is a remake of Waiting For Mr. Jordan, where the main character is a heavyweight boxer and plays the sax.

    • Good man. I think that was one place I asked years ago. Worth another try me thinks.

    • I think I've looked through that list or similar before, but will do so again once I get a bit of time. I'm not sure baseball has anything actually to do with the film other than remember that's what he'd been doing just before his ticket got punched.
