City or Countryside?

Personally, I choose countryside to build my house.
There is fresher air and other reason.
How about you? where would you prefer to live?

I have a house built in the country, but it's only an hour and a half away from Chicago. I can go to a cubs game, or to the House of Blues and be surrounded by literally millions of people. Then I can go back home and be surrounded by woods. I love it.

I want a country home. I'd prefer a small farm, like 10 acres and would REALLY love a self sustaining home

Topography not withstanding I want my home to be close enough to the grandchildren that they are able to walk over by themselves......and far enough away that their parents won't bother doing the same!

Too funny. I was just wishing the same thing in reverse. I want to be close enough to the in-laws to drop the kid off, but not close enough that they'll come to visit!

I have both. A house in an urban area of LA to be available to my clients, and a mountain retreat to get away from them all.

I would love to build my house in a countryside but I prefer being a bit near cities so that every time I need to get something, it won't be difficult..

I take it that you are a devote internet buyer.

I buy from the internet if it is not available in town. If I can find it in town, I just go to town because I can get it quicker that way (don't have to wait for it to come by mail).

As for groceries, such as MILK, please don't tell me you buy that off the net.

As for where I like to have my house, it is in the country. I like to have a house that is in a wooded area (lots of shade and feels peaceful). My relatives such as my nieces/nephew, parents, siblings and grandparents live close by anyway, so I'm cool there.

Yes, and a seller. I have a website that sells consumable products. Mostly pantry goods as well as vanity (cosmetic) products. Almost 3,000 items in the catalog. I ship all over the USA and Canada so if you get mail, or UPS or FedX you don't need a big city to get my stuff.

You're right about the milk. I carry several lines of high-end chocolate that can't be shipped from June through September.

          I ship cheese, though

I've often wondered why you dont see places on the internet like virtual grocery stores. i would think it would be a great think for the homebound or those that live in the boonies

Well, Michael, the VCs got onboard during the dot-com boom, think WebGroceries.com, and got their tails handed to them.

The big problem is the margins are so small that you spend a lot of effort for a paltry return. I average about a 20% overall net even though I try to keep a keystone mark-up on most products.

And since my niche is imported European products the currency devaluation of the dollar against the Euro is killing me. Right now my dollar buys me about $0.697 to the Euro. Years ago it would have gotten, and did, as much as $1.09.

Shipping has gone through the roof, as well.

If I wasn't so entrenched in this niche I'd just walk away. What's funny is that so many mom and pop brick and morter stores in this niche (which I used to be up until 2006) never went online, and now they are closing their doors.

Don't kid yourself, this is one tuff nut to crack

                Back on topic.

I don't want a big house. I want a nice place in a nice location.

My choice would be somewhere by the sea on an island with an international airport and a decent internet connection.

Rarotonga (Cook Islands) would be my place of choice.

Close enough to Tahiti yet a lot cheaper. A short hop to Auckland, New Zealand by plane.

Also, monsterous storms rarely hit there.
