Oh No! I might be deformed!

Just recently, I keep having terrible pains across the top of my buttocks and both butt cheeks go into charlie horses. Sometimes just one, sometimes both. Then I get these shooting pains down the back of my hammies. It happens every day as I'm running around the store putting all of the tills into the registers before we open. And most mornings when I attempt to get out of bed, then eases off a bit and starts again at work.

I can't bend over like normal. I have to sort of bend a little, shift my upper body to the right then continue bending down.

I made an appointment with my doctor finally after putting up with it for about 4 months. It's later this afternoon.

Weird thing. My daughter called me last night and told me her back went out on her again, except this time, she couldn't feel or use her legs at all! Long story short, she had an MRI and the diagnosis was that she has a congenital birth defect, congenital pars deformity. Basically the top of her pelvic bone did not fuse with her spine, or something like that. And now, her lower vertebrae are tilted downwards and her dics are bulging.

Since she fell off the the high bars in gymnastics as a teen and suffered a stress fracture, she has had intermittent back pain which increased in frequency since her car accident from the tornado. Then what I mentioned above.

Here's the kicker, her doctor told her that this condition, more times than not, is genetic/hereditary. He asked her if anyone in her family was suffering from lower back/hip pain. She answered her mom started with some recently. He told her that makes sense as most people with this deformity don't know they have it til much later in life as they age. It goes undetected. So he told her to tell me and have that checked.

I already had my appointment made for today, how convenient.

I'm just flabbergasted! I might be deformed.

I guess, I'll just have to wait and see what my physician says in a couple of hours...

Sigh...

I had to read that part 2x. lol

On a more serious note, we are all deformed.

Wait - ok, really now, on a more serious note, I hope the appointment goes well and should you also have this issue that there is something not too costly or stressful to endure that helps you to alleviate the problem.

I've had back spasm issues myself that leave me unable to walk upright. Anything hips and spine can be tough.

Wishing you good thoughts on that appointment.

Okay, I obviously am home from my Dr.'s visit.

After a grueling appointment with hands on manipulation of my torso, rib cage, hips, pelvis, etc., her unofficial diagnosis is, and I quote, "You are all kinds of messed up!"

Phase one, I have to get some x-rays tomorrow after work. I have to get an L-5 spinal one and a right and left hip with AP Pelvis one, whatever that means. In the meantime, I got two shots and let me just say, OWIE! Those suckers burned! One was something called Torodol and the other was Prednisone.

I have three prescriptions to pick up from the pharmacy when they text me that they're ready. One is a steroid pack, one is a muscle relaxer, and I forgot what the other was.

I have to take them after work, obviously, and before bedtime.

Oh, and yes, hubby will be driving, I don't think I can manage that just yet. Heee, hee!

        So, the process has begun.

Dang Terra ... I thought this was going to be a joke thread.
I'm sorry that "You are all kinds of messed up!"

After a while daily pain is soul crushing so if its not helping fast

Terra, just proudly think of it as "my body is extraordinarily unique"!

On a more serious note, I hope the medications help and that whatever is causing the pain can be resolved without any kind of invasive measures. You've already been through enough health stuff this past year!

It sounds exactly like the symptoms that I had right before my OA of hips diagnosis.

I pray and hope it is not. It's hell and only gets worse until you get total hip replacement .

Awww, thanks so much for the well wishes, you guys! (And ladies) I don't care what anyone says, you're all a bunch of sweethearts!

Okay, I got my four x-rays done today. It's Friday so I probably won't hear anything until Tuesday.

But, this is what I do know. I'm all kinds of messed up, lol!

Seriously though, I couldn't lie flat on the table for the x-rays. You know how when you lie flat in the supine position, there's a small arch in the small of your back? About enough of an arch to slip your hand under and that's it?

Well, from my behind all the way up to mid back is stuck in a big arch. Owie! And my right hip protrudes an inch further than my left. In other words, they're sort of diagonal rather than straight across. Yikes!

Yep, all kinds of messed up, lol!

Anyway, I have taken the steroids and muscle relaxer and the 800 milligram Ibuprofen, so I'm all kind of messed up that way, too, haha!

        Like I wasn't loopy enough?

        So next, we wait...sigh...

      Thanks Dan!

I'm holding my own what with the steroids and muscle relaxers. At least now when the spasms hit, they're a dull jolt rather than dropping me to the floor. That's progress, right?

I am being smart though and not doing anything that I know will induce a flare up, like vacuuming. And not vacuuming this weekend is driving me nuts! I did dust everything though, lol!

I really don't want surgery at all. But we can't even plan a next step until the x-ray results are back and see what they show.

I have to go back to work tomorrow and be on my feet for 5 1/2 hours with a smile firmly planted on my face. I think I can pull it off.

        Oh no!

I am deformed and I'm a degenerate! LOL!

I went to my medical portal and found the radiology reports from my spine, pelvic and hip x-rays.

I'll just wait til my doctor calls me. I have no clue what should be done next.

        Here's what they say...

TECHNIQUE: AP and lateral views of the lumbar spine were obtained

FINDINGS: There are 5 nonrib-bearing lumbar vertebrae. Lumbar vertebral body height is maintained. Grade 1 anterolisthesis of L4 over L5 x 7 mm. The disc spaces appear relatively maintained. Facet degenerative changes at L5/S1, L4/L5.

        IMPRESSION:
        Grade 1 anterolisthesis of L4 over L5.
Facet degenerative changes of lower lumbar spine.
        and

TECHNIQUE: Frontal view of the pelvis, AP and lateral views of both hips were
        obtained.

FINDINGS: No evidence of fracture or dislocation. Mild degenerative changes of the hips with joint space narrowing and sclerosis of the superior acetabular region. The pelvic ring is intact. Degenerative changes of the sacroiliac joints. Facet degenerative changes of the lower lumbar spine.

        IMPRESSION:
Mild degenerative changes of hips, sacroiliac joints.
        No fracture or dislocation.
On the bright side, I haven't shrunk because my vertebral body height is maintained, lol!

I'm going to have to wait until my doctor calls me with the results and see what on earth we're going to do next. I just wish she'd be quick about it. These meds are messin' with my brain, haha!

My doc called saying she has my results, but rather than discuss anything over the phone, she wants to see me in her office Thursday.

I don't know whether to be scared she wouldn't discuss my results, options, etc. over the phone, or be agitated she wouldn't discuss anything over the phone because there isn't an office visit charge for that.

                Hey Terra,
just from my own experience narrowing of the space within the Hip Joint is degenerative OA. ( they even said 'degenerative' didn't they ?)

Although you do seem in early stages. Which is a good thing

I am NOT a doctor but just from my experience if you do any kind of running be sure stay off cement and asphalt. And do not walk long distances like a Marathon. Do low impact stuff

Not sure what exercises you do ?? But swimming is a great alternative.

But just listen to what ole doc says and most importantly listen to what your body says

Take a deep breath and relax.

She doesn't want to talk over the phone because she doesn't know for sure who she is talking to.

It may be good, it may not be, but that's got nothing to do with her refusing to talk about it over the phone.

Trust me, she knows my voice, but I also understand about the stringent Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA).

I've thought about it, and she may have the films and want to show me things as she discusses the problems and options of treatment, or further imaging.

And I have to go to physical therapy to strengthen bone and muscle. (Did I mention that I hate going through physical therapy?) At least that is step/plan 1. Hopefully it works.

And I have to wear a brace , and I might not be working because I have a ton of restrictions that will undoubtedly restrict me from doing most of my job.so I'm debating if I'm going to call the store right now and tell them, or if I'll just show up tomorrow with the list and see what happens, lol!

                        Thanks, Cheryl!

I hope this bout of physical therapy does the job.

Years ago, I was in a water skiing accident that caused me to have 7 small muscle tears in my, neck, arm pit and shoulder blade. It dragged on for 7 years on and off of PT. Plus a myriad of different narcotics and nerve meds.

I got so sick of it after 7 years, that I finally said forget it! and refused any more of either. And guess what? I healed on my own without anything. I guess the best thing was to just leave them alone and stop agitating those muscles.

I still refuse narcotics. My pain pills are 800 mg of Ibuprofen and Torodol shots. I won't take anything stronger.

Anyway, there's some insight into why I hate Physical Therapy. I'm going to do it, but reluctantly. At least this time if it doesn't help, my doc says we'll move onto something else. I must admit it will be nice to have my buttocks out of spasm though, lol!

I was given a whole bottle of prescription pain meds years ago after a laparoscopy - they made me really nauseous, and throwing up was far too painful, so I never took them once I left the hospital. Plus, they're so highly addictive that avoiding them if possible is a good thing.

You'll get through this, and hopefully your body will heal quickly and you'll be good as new very soon!

Well, this morning I 'm going to report to work like always and see if they send me home or make a lot of accommodations for me.

I honestly can't decide which it will be, but with no lifting anything over 10 pounds, no overhead lifting, no bending, stooping or twisting and must sit down as needed...

I certainly can't do my job, at least in the same way I usually do. Perhaps they have a cart I could use for the tills, one waist high?? But there's the heavy money bag I have to get out of the rolling safe to fill the tills. I definitely can't do that.

Aw well, I'll know soon enough.

                            sigh...

Princess, they've been in spasm for about a week, I need them to unspasm, lol!

We had a visiting manager yesterday whom I have a good working relationship with, and who always compliments my positive attitude and my happy demeanor, ask me, "Whoa! What got shoved up your butt?"

I asked him what he meant, and said,"I thought I still had a good attitude."

He said, No, no, I know you do. But you're walking like you've got something up your butt!"

Okay, it seems I am well loved. All accommodations have been made for me to stay and do my job with the assistance I need, so as not to violate any of my restrictions. We did it today, and it worked out very well. The big guy even went and bought me a stool so I could sit as needed.

I'm still a little sore, but nothing like before when I worked doing all of the things I can't now.

All I have to force myself to do now, is find a physical Therapy facility that is in network and set it up.

I'm not looking forward to it nor the $40 co-pay per visit!

                                Sometimes, life stinks!

I had my Physical Therapy evaluation yesterday. The therapist agrees that I'm all kind of messed up. He said it was amazing how limber I still am at my age and that was saving me a lot more problems.

He discovered a whole bunch of things about me that I didn't even realize. For instance, when I walk, my pelvic cage swings to the left, then right, then left, right, etc. A normal gait is that your pelvis is supposed to be stationary and your legs just go back and forth as you put one foot in front of the other.

He also said most of my pain is from pinched nerves. Not only is my sciatic nerve pinched, but also a bundle of nerves. It was freaky. He had me sit, slump forward with my head down and he began to mess around with my lower back, pushing in certain areas and I kid you not, it felt like some one was rubbing the inside if my legs, right above the knee! He said it was a different nerve.

Anyway goal number one is to find safe, happy spots to alleviate the nerves as to get them to calm down and then work on strengthening my abdominal muscles without disturbing the nerves. He told me I need to walk with my pelvic cage thrust forward without looking like an idiot!

I feel I must look like Gumby, or the dude that eats hamburgers in Popeye, or the keep on trucking guy from the 70's or maybe even Steve Erkle.

Anyway, for the second half of today, I have been right buttock spasm free!

Hooray! The rest of me (lower back, left buttock, rear thighs and calfs) hurts like a biotch, but no buttock spasm on the right. Now, let's hope it stays that way. I have my next session tomorrow after work. I wonder if it can last that long...

Anyway, I'm off for a hot soak in the tub.

I've done a little research while waiting for my doc to call, and I'm not sure I like it so much...

      Anterolisthesis

The vertebrae are the bones that protect the spinal cord. Each vertebra has a thick drum-shaped area in front called a vertebral body. Between the vertebrae are spaces that allow nerves (nerve roots) to go from the spinal cord to other parts of the body.

In anterolisthesis, the upper vertebral body is positioned abnormally compared to the vertebral body below it. More specifically, the upper vertebral body slips forward on the one below.

The amount of slippage is graded on a scale from 1 to 4. Grade 1 is mild (20% slippage), while grade 4 is severe (100% slippage).

Symptoms can vary depending on whether the slippage is enough to pinch the nerve roots (the portion of the nerve that leaves the spinal cord to connect to other parts of the body) that go from the spinal cord to other parts of the body. In this case, the symptoms will differ depending on where the affected area is.

Symptoms can involve movement or problems feeling sensations (such as heat, cold, pain, position in space, etc.), loss of control of bowels or bladder, pain and poor posture.

A doctor will take the patient's medical history and do a physical exam, including checking the patient's reflexes.

X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will also show the slippage.

Treatment options include interbody fusion and surgical instrumentation techniques.
      Source: Cedars-Sinai

Okay, so I'm slipping. At least I've only slipped 20%, haha!

      Hopefully, Doc will call today.

Robert's post reminded me of a physical therapist (PT) I know.
She was not your average PT. She was an Olympic athlete,
and an Apple executive was a PT client of hers.

Anyway, her big thing is PT in swimming pools. Salt ones are better than
    chlorine ones.

Just another darn thing to keep in mind.

I wish you well, and please carefully explore the options.

      Thanks Dan!

As soon as I get a list of options, I'll certainly explore them!

I talked with my daughter a bit ago and her diagnosis reads the same as mine, not the hip one, but the slipped L4 over L5. The one her doctor said was a birth defect and genetic.

The hip one is mine and mine alone.

      Robert,

I walk Lexi, I dance, I ride my bike (not in the winter, though, lol!), I water ski and swim. I lift lady weights, the not too heavy covered in different colors of rubber ones, haha!

So, back to more waiting...two more days...sigh...

Terra, ask your doctor about taking up some pilates - if that might be good or not at some point.

I personally hate it, had to do it as a course requirement in college (being a dancer).

It is all about strengthening the core.

I realize yours is bone and slippage, but stronger core muscles might help keep things pulled together. Just a thought.

Hmm, maybe... I've only been to PT twice so far and the second time was yesterday. Unfortunately, I was worse than my initial visit on Monday.

Had a bad day at work yesterday. That's why I'm home today, actually. We got that snow that was predicted and because of that, there was only 3 employees at work with me being one of them.

There were no cashiers at all, so all of the customers came to my register at customer service. Someone had moved my tall chair they provided for me out of my area so I was standing.

Funny how employees couldn't make it to work, but customers certainly could.

Next, our freight truck came early, so the only other two employees had to go out and unload the freight. I felt the compression in my lower back and paged for assistance. I did this 8 times in 3 and a half hours and got no assistance, no response.

I found out later that they couldn't hear my pages because they were outside in the freight truck unloading. Anyway, all of a sudden, it felt like someone injected burning hot acid into my lower back. It felt searing hot and I dropped a bit and tears just flowed from my eyes.

My customer at that time was a little old lady and she said,"Oh honey, you look like you're in pain." I just nodded at her. I assisted 5 more customers while "the burning acid" dripped down the back of my legs.

Then two more employees got there, the front end lead and our human resources lady. She looked at me and yelled to the front end lead lady and told her to get me a cart. I guess what was happening was written all over my face. They told me to take my break but to lean and put all of my weight on the cart which I did.

After my break, the pain was less severe, a cashier had showed up and a few more employees. I was able to sit for the remaining hour and a half til my shift was over.

I went straight to physical therapy where they told me I was worse. Rather than having tight muscles just in my lower back pinching nerves, I now had them up to my shoulder blades tight and pinching more nerves. I just had manual traction on my back almost the whole time. It was followed up with a tens unit and a huge heated pad thing over the tens unit on my lower back. That felt great.

My PTist told me to stay off my feet and that I should do minimal walking and standing on the job. Well, that's primarily all I do. Walk and stand. So I took the day off work today and I follow up with my doctor today at 2.

It will be interesting to see what she says and does. I may not be working at all. If not, it won't hurt my feelings any. I just want to get better and if my job exasperates my condition, then it wouldn't be very bright to continue...

Ask your doctor if a teeter type thing would be useful. See if you can have your insurance cover it.

I'd totally get one if I were staying in any one place permanently. Not feeling any pains now, but I do like the back stretching thing - looks like a positive thing to me.

Of course, I'd have to get a TV mounted and upside down on a wall somewhere for maximum enjoyment.

Sorry, I've been out for a bit, but between work, physical therapy and doctor follow ups, I've been a tad preoccupied.

Jill, I asked Brian, my physical therapist, and he actually recommended it but added never tilt the table more than 30 degrees.

Speaking of Brian...after my treatment today, he wrote a letter to my doctor and asked me to give it to her tomorrow at my follow up visit. He basically told her as long as I continued to work, my nerves would continue to be very aggravated and I couldn't heal so therefore, we are never going to be able to move on to my core strengthening exercises. After 8 visits, we are still just treating the inflammation, irritation and pain.

He stated he was leaving it up to her good judgement as my physician, but that is what he recommends. He wants me totally off my feet for at least a week.

I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Anyway, after I see my doctor tomorrow, I'll let you know what she says and does.

      Update:

Not that you really care, but it helps to just get it out rather than fretting.

Anyway, my doctor put me off work for a week, suspended my physical therapy, and is sending me to an orthopedic. Just lovely!

I think it is rather stupid to set up an appointment with a specialist the same day as you scheduled my follow up, just a couple of hours apart, buy hey, I'm just a patient, what do I know, right?

      I'm getting tired of this...

      <sigh>....
